Thank you for your prompt reply and well received suggestions. I am going to try them and I am going to also try using a Home Depot varnish sponge brush after spraying on the varnish to even the coats and remove any bubbles. The brush will leave no hair strands.

For dye ink, that is really amazing! Wow, I never thought dye ink could hold up that well. Very helpful video!

And that was with the older inks. I am running another year long test with OEM against the new Signature edition inks. It's been 6 months with no change between the two.

Only for non RC coated papers such as Fine Art Fiber based papers.

Two great videos, many questions that I had have been answered. Thank you! Unfortunately, simply watching the video I would say that is a massive change, the new print Vs the year-old unprotected. Certainly not what could be considered an archival print without - as you mention in the first instalment well pointed out, correct storage and/or framed carefully lit and considered presentation.

Great to see the followups to tests you mention in earlier videos. If you had done another one that was under glass, what would you have expected it to look after a year on top of your stairs?

I did not do that but a few photos I've placed under glass and placed in a SUN room with three glass walls at my daughter's has been there for close to 5 years and is still looks as good as new. They were done on Red River Palo Duro Soft Rag on the PRO-100 with PC inks. I sprayed it and framed it under glass. It's all about protection OR use OEM!!

Jose, you are so far ahead of me .... I am so slow at all this but I love it with a passion that has driven me all my life...This is classic! I have to take notes.....You bring up the old swellable papers that encapsulated the ink preserving even the dye inks and Mike from Precision Colors says in his review of the Canon Pro 100 " If you want 50 YEAR PLUS PRINTS to use HP Premium Plus or Ilford Galarie Classic Line of print papers. They are swellable papers that puts them close to the pigments" What would happen if you use HP Premium Plus papers in a gallary show?

That's the plan. Be aware that CANON PRO-luster paper will not help much as it is likely to fade MANY times faster than the same inks being used on a GOOD Non OBAs fine art 100% rag paper.

This has been very informative...thank you so much. Idk much about inks, but I'm looking at protecting some family photos in a collage on a canvas ( that is not made to put in glass) I had printed at Walgreens Same Day service... Idk if the Moab Dessert Varnish works with that kind of ink...worried if it will cause ink to run??? Any advice is appreciated.

Hello, I just watched your video. I just want to ask if you already tried spraying fixative on a photographic paper? Lets say an Ilford paper. Will there be any difference?

for me to prevent fading I put it in protective cover or a photo frame it will last forever. I compared it tot he one with and without cover the one without cover it faded after 3+ months the one with cover or frame lasted years for me. It only fades if I use glossy one but if I use matter or non glossy paper it will last longer.

Hi José, another helpful video from you. Many thanks for that. If I remember well, you planned to do the same test with watercolor paper and put it on the back shield of your car. Did you run this test ?

I never did that as my wife said NO!!!! Put your prints somewhere else! But since I print using OEM Pigment inks on that paper plus a couple of front and back coats of a goo UV spray like Moab Desert Varnish, I would expect them to last for decades. Something like that I would never use 3rd party inks on. Specially If I sell them.

How to reset page counter for ink absorber full Canon TS8120

I tried the Moab Desert varnish spray. Had a two issues. Spraying by hand created uneven coatings. I had to spray several times to get how fast or slow to spray, but even when I got better at it the coating seemed to vary. Secondly, when I sprayed sometimes bubbles formed which left craters on the print. I would be interested in whether there is a varnish for canon paper that can be applied with a roller or sponge brush? Thank you for your video on this subject.

You need practice to spray evenly. Never swing the can but spray moving it perpendicular and parallel to the surface. Begin well betond the edges and stop between each pass. Over lap the passes. You will get a nice even coat. Also switch passes 90 degrees after the first complete coat. Two coats is all I ever apply but I also only treat matter fine art papers and not glossy or kuster prints. Canon RC type papers do not respond well to.l sprays or roller applications. Rolling varnish is pretty much standard for canvas prints.

Hi, I have a poster that I have recently got it signed but noticed that the ink is flaking off. I want to preserve the signature with zero effect of the spray. Which spray would you recommend?

Very interesting video, Jose. Thank you. It raised a question for me; on the Canon Pro 10S as you know, you can choose to use the Chroma Optimizer coating on prints. Do you think this would be necessary if you were to spray the print with Moab Desert varnish?

You could get away without using CO but you can not truly eliminate it's use with papers that use PK. You can only set it to AUTO. Only Matte Papers will not use CO!

Thanks for all your effort. I'm a woodworker/baseball fan and I'm here because I'm making a new product- a round "baseball card mirror frame." The cards are glued to 1/4" mdf. The (non-valuable) cards are from the 80's and have been in the dark closet. The best feature of my frame is the COLOR. Naturally, I want to preserve it. Do you have any further suggestions? If not, you've done enough, I will try the finishes you've suggested. Thanks and take care.

The finishes are for Photo Print Papers. I don't know how they will work out for Pre printed cards.

Hi Jose! Great video. Can you please advise me what brand spray I can use to protect some of my car printed black & white instruction stickers so that they don’t fade. Most of the stickers are simple A4 matte paper.

Since they are not photo paper you can any UV protestant spray found in art supply stores. I love Moab Desert Varnish.

I have an A3 print on the wall from my old Epson R1800 17 years old with no special treatment and fade is negligable. Maybe it will be show with different paper types but for family photos it's probably better to make a new print when it fades rather than spraying. Just use factory inks, archival paper, mount behind glass out of direct light and they will last for a very long time.

I'm glad you did this test. I question the validity of accelerated testing. I wonder if it could be like testing the evaporation of a pot of water. You crank up the heat on a pot of water to 220F and the water is gone in 10 minutes so you surmise that at 180F, it'd take let's say 20 minutes based on that result. Yet the pot at 180F wouldn't be boiling and would sit there for many hours. But I guess the folks who do the tests have run correlations against real time fading and know what they are doing?

They have and they use MegaLux to measure the amount of light bombarding the print samples. They absolutely swear that it can be correlated but they do the rest under controller conditions that would not apply to anything or any display condition any of her would ever use to display our prints.

how much are you actually supposed to spray on though? some demos it seems like they're really saturating it with spray and others, it's just a few passes.

I spray about 10" away in even overlapping passes in both directions. It will look wet on papers with any sheen.

Jose, if you had to estimate, how long with a print printed on the Pro 100 with Canon OEM dye inks last?? I know there are a lot of variables, but if I hung a picture on a wall in my house, not in direct sunlight, could I expect the print to last over 5 years?? 10 years?? I sometimes provide prints for free or small cost to customers and I am not sure what I should tell them. I am not ready to go to pigment ink printer just yet. I have been spraying with Moab desert varnish.

Well the OEM inks are "Rated" to 100 years! I am 100% sure there are some caveats to that such as ACTUAL Display Conditions and such. Spraying will further increase that life span even moreI am sure.

@@cheo1949 AND among those caveats, the PAPER that is used? Or do you think the paper is far less a factor in fading? Red River told me that when it comes to protection from fading, the INKS are about 75% and type of paper only about 25%. What do you think, Jose?

With the new Epson inks on the p700/900 claiming color protection for 200 years, have we reached a point that we don't need any of these protective sprays?

hey jose! :) Thank you for your helpful videos. In this video you state that the direct sun is on the prints until 11 am. Have you tested with a lux meter to get an approximate average of the the Lux that was falling on this prints during those morning hours, and then the remainder of the day? Very curious as to how many lux hours may have accumulated in this testing.

I have not and that would useless information for the majority of folks. Unless they too could measure their very specific illumination display conditions. My prints may last a year there. Down in my room they last a decade. In my living room they may last 5 years.

Oh and not to mention papers!!!!!!

Being a novice my question is - How long time will go before a dye based image will degrade to an unacceptable level side by side with a pigment based image under normal lighting conditions, e.g. for images hanging over the fire place behind glass (or UV coated). In other words - when is the net difference unacceptable, and how degraded will the pigment based copy be at that time? Or - how long time will they survive before a serious photographer would replace the dye based copy with a fresh one - or the customer, who bought these copies some time ago and placed them under the same conditions, will call you to complain. Are we talking 2 years or 5 years vs 100 years? Apparently the dye system is much more affordable, but if I can't sell the product the saving is useless.

so will you make a 3 year test?

SO you 'nothing' image was also exposed to the same light? where was the control print? ie printed at the same time, same paper, same inks and kept in the dark? all this test did was find out how good the sprays are and looking at this not much..... Oh how a bout a OEM as a referance print as well to compair to PC inks.

Unfortunately after a year I misplaced the stored in the dark control! But I have a good idea what box it might be in. I thought the next best thing would be comparing to brand new equivalents. Once I locate it I will compare it and see if there is any fading at all. The no protection one did receive the same treatment of light exposure for one year.
