it was interesting coming out of my psychology studies because that's basically the psychological definition of anxiety (in contrast with fear). fear is a response to something immediate and obvious, while anxiety is a response to perceived danger in the future.

My headcanon for Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment is that they are feelings, not emotions. Emotions are natural to us since we get them from birth, while feelings develop naturally as we grow up.

They are emotions hands down, they are natural reactions, feelings are what happen when we presses those emotions with thoughts. Instead i will say that you may think that because they didn’t intend to add these emotion in the first film. And that isn’t even including some basic/ core emotions that got left out such as surprise, trust, anticipation and if you rally want to go all out maybe call shame up. So in short what your saying also doesn’t make since.

I hope we get a lot more of these metaphors. Also, Just wanted to say, with Fear being voiced by Tony Hale now, I can't not hear Dr. Psycho every time he says anything. Paul Walter Hauser played an imaginary creature in an early 2024 animation (Orion and the Dark). He’ll also play Embarrassment, another imaginary creature in another early 2024 animation (Inside Out 2). Let me guess, alongside Justin Timberlake (yes, I think at some point, because he played a troll in DreamWorks’ Trolls and a bear in Yogi Bear 2010 and a human in Shrek the Third, he might as well play a bird whether or not it be “Justin Timbirdlake”), he’ll play another one of the ducks in another one of Pixar’s newly-announced (and their newest-announced one since the release year of Toy Story 5 which I predicted would be 2026, likely June 19 with Ducks to be released on March 19 and Cars 4, I think will be released on June 18, 2027). Raise your hand up if you think my predictions are far-fetched.

I think the difference in the main plot lines is that Inside Out 1 had Joy and Sadness leaving was mostly accidental and the other emotions tried to cope with them gone, whereas in Inside Out 2 has Anxiety bottle them up intentionally and the new emotions try to rework the whole system from the ground up. The subtext I get being 1 being the issue of having an emotional state where you aren't happy and can't feel like you can be sad, which leaves someone scared, irritable, and largely unhappy until they either realize that sadness is a natural state or spiral into feelings of numbness; whereas 2 could be the state of teenagehood where you feel the need to "bloom into who you will become," which is hard when a lot of the emotions you feel is the anxious desire to be approved of, embarrassment when you aren't, envy toward people who appear more put together, and a new-found lack of interest in most things. I think the movie will probably have Riley stumble with Anxiety making her decisions reflect what would make others happy instead of herself, both get frustrated at her new system failing, and end with Riley and Anxiety realizing that, while it is good to be socially aware and have some anxiety toward how you present yourself and that anxiety itself is the hopeful desire that everything will work out the best it can, it is a balancing act to not let anxiety and the desire to be liked control every decision you make.

In one shot, you can see Joy holding a blue and yellow memory orb that looks pretty similar to the one made at the end of the first movie that made the new Family Island, which intrigues me. Maybe instead of the core memories coming out by accident, these new emotions remove certain core memories on purpose, as their twisted view of the world would see things like loving family as embarrassing to friends. It is a little weird to do the whole "get the core memories back to headquarters" plot point again; I was kind of hoping this entire movie would take place in the control center to allow for more dialogue with all the characters, but this could be very interesting!

Even though the overall storyline is similar to the first, what leads up to the inciting incident is much different in this one; In the first, Joy was trying to suppress Sadness, but ended up getting them both sent out of Headquarters, while in this one, I assume Anxiety and the other new emotions will be suppressing the original emotions, and will likely banish them from Headquarters. It would be like if Joy straight up threw Sadness out of Headquarters, and the film revolved around Sadness' journey back. Even though there's similarities, the overall plot is different than the first.

I could totally see them having Inside Out 3 be set during college. Monsters University was a college movie, granted it was about monsters not humans. Toy Story 3 had Andy going off to college, although he barely really showed up since it’s all focused on the toys. But you could make the argument that the main characters of Inside Out are the emotions, therefore it still gives them a way to make a movie set in college without having to make that plot the actual main focus.

Right I’m going to be honest, I know I might get some backlash but I have no remorse for what I’m about to say. I’m not a fan of the new emotions, they are way too oddly specific that they kinda feel questionable, non-sensical or some cases wasted potential. Now I’m not saying I’m against new emotions tho there is some continuity issues, but the four we have gotten are…not the best choices in my opinion. Anxiety: Now I know a lot of people are going to say fear and anxiety are two separate emotions/feelings and you know what, you’re right. But I will stay it’s way too similar. For me it’s like having anger and resentment or sadness and despair in the same movie. Now in a different world or lore you could indeed add an emotion based character for each emotion but the first film made it very clear that other emotions are made by two emotions which this sequel seems to completely flip this entirely. Also I’m also not a fan of anxiety because of what it could mean for fear. Fear all ready represents anxiety very well in the first film and so with anxiety being in, what would give fear do. Especially if we a panic attack scene the only thing it will reinforce is “why isn’t fear doing this?”. The only good thing I could see about this character is we may get a puss in boost: the last wish esc scene of a panic attack. But thats it. Envy: I have a very simpler issue to envy like I have with anxiety. While anger and envy are different feelings, I still say it’s too close. Also design wise I’m definitely not a fan. I definitely think she should look a lot more grouchy to represent the more toxic side of envy considering envy/jealousy are definitely contenders of most toxic feelings in the mental world. And yes am aware that all emotions aren’t evil however it isn’t good to hide the destructive portrayal that emotions have. In fact anger did it pretty well, you could tell by looking at him he could seriously hurt someone other the most petty of reasons but still comes of as not evil. Ennui: honestly this emotion represents how I feel about it really. While I think it doesn’t get the brunt of my ire like anxiety and embarrassment, I will still say that ennui is a bit mixed for me. I honestly think that ennui would be the utter lack of emotion, it’s what happens when no one is at the controls. I also kinda don’t like the colour too, when I first saw the poster I actually thought they were envy for their sharpe sinister look and grey would represent ennui better, but oh well. Also how is ennui supposed to make memories. In the first film we are told that memories that the host don’t care for fade, so tell me how is Riley supposed to hold on to a memory that causes her to feel board. Because by the logic of the first film that memory should fade almost instantly because no one remembers a boring memory. Embarrassment: This one has me the most interested…for all the wrong reasons. And this where I have the issue of wasted potential. To be fair only two emotions have this issue for me that being anxiety (my favourite punching bag) and embarrassment. While I think anxiety kinda screws over fear and doesn’t make whole lot of sense when coming off of the first film, there is an emotion that could replace anxiety and yet fills a similar role. It’s a core emotion in plutchik's emotion theory and just like anxiety also starts with an A. Anticipation. Anticipation is an emotion that is always trying to predict upcoming events and can be either be a feeling of pleasure or prolonged distress. And If fear is quote on quote anxiety’s dad then anticipation would easily be the mother or other parent, whatever. So how dose this circle back to embarrassment…well Embarrassment sort of steps on the toes of another emotion though unlike anxiety isn’t in the inside-out universe but has serious untapped potential if did have it own emotion based character. That emotion is shame. Shame just like embarrassment is a self-conscious emotions and in some emotional theory’s or to some people can also be described as a discrete or basic emotion tho some say theories say other wise. The thing is embarrassment is just a lesser form or a sub-category of shame. And shame in general is 10x more of an interesting emotion to explore over embarrassment. While I was doing research I found that some psychologists call shame the master emotion, because not only does it have multiple physical and psychological effects but also get this determines other emotions and how their reactions play out. To quote” shame can be considered to be the master emotion because it controls the expression and even our recognition of other emotions”-Thomas J. Scheff. And that to me would be such an awesome concept for an inside out character. An emotion that ether was always in the mind or makes a new appearance in head quarters introduces him or herself (I would rather it be a guy) and then proceeds to in some way take charge of head quarters and may even usurp joys position for a bit, much to joys displeasure. Or you know change things considerably. And thats even not mentioning that shame is a way more adaptable emotion or persistent emotion over embarrassment. Embarrassment can only be felt when something is exposed or could be exposed. For example someone finds that you have crush on someone, your behind is exposed in public or your mum shows your baby photos to your friends. It requires something to be shown about us for us to feel embarrassment. shame mean while can be felt any time or more often and even over the most simplest of things, you let down your team, you failed a test or you didn’t get A+ in it or maybe you thought other people did better in the test than you did, you stole your mums credit card and had second thoughts or you broke something that wasn’t yours. heck I felt a bit of shame when I had to go to MacDonalds to get pancakes because I felt like I could of done something more instead of buying junk food to scoff down my throat. And shame in general is just an emotion that affects life in general, so much in fact that it can’t be ignored or not mentioned. And to top it off shame is one of the single most painful emotions to experience period. And honestly once again this would all combine to create an absolute outstanding inside out emotion. They could play a similar role to sadness, but while sadness kinda just goes through the motions as joy drags her around. Shame can be a lot more stubborn thanks to their moral standards and role to play while also being one of the emotions not afraid to protest some of joys or even other emotions decisions because they’re ether questionable or not morally appropriate. Making them kinda look like a buzzkill or antagonist. That along side the fact that shame is pretty self-destructive emotion and would cause Riley to feel worse than sadness. This is what joys finds detestable and the two almost have an office rival like relation-ship in the beginning, but then in the middle or the climax learn somethings. After all shame is although a pretty nasty emotion to experience and has negative consequences is still bloody important in mental well being and especially for social life and our moral compass meaning they could the only emotion that could possibly be described as a necessary evil. And sadly you can’t do the same with embarrassment. In terms of the character of embarrassment we got-I guess the hoodie is cool, it makes some sense due to the fact that you want to hide when embarrassed…still not going to redeem them after what could’ve came instead of them but alas. So yeah I’m definitely not a fan of the new emotions. And my dislike for them has grown more as their shown to be the main issue in the sequel and kick out the basic five which is just dumb because we feel all types of emotion and comes off as pessimistic and not really thought out. I did like the concept of the bottle but also feel it’s a bit odd for inside out, because in reality it’s the person who actively bottles up their feeling and or emotions not other emotion and this intern makes daily feel more like a robot than an actual person. So yeah I’m personally still not looking forward to it and most of it has to do with the new emotions they’re picked And once again I’m totally up for new emotions but these ones are too oddly specific that they sort don’t mesh well. Instead i think having more discrete or basic emotions could’ve worked better as well as mixing and matching multiple emotion theory’s to have a larger crew of emotions that could cover a large spectrum. But now looking back at it’s probably rather difficult to add new emotions because their presence wasn’t known in the first film and so having new emotions just pop up will just look jarring. You would either have to make a separate timeline to make them work or just leave the story as is and both option are better than this. But I do hope it works for Disney/ Disney-Pixar because it would be a shame (ha ha) if we did lose them, as much as they have fallen from grace over the years I also feel they still have potential they just need to find their footing.

No offence but this opinion seems very nitpicky and overly cynical. Most of your comments of these new emotions reek of bias and barely anything objective from a psychological stance. Sum your descriptions of the new emotions presented are grossly oversimplified and dismissive, and the whole Shame and Anticipation idea, while a cool concept, seems like the only one's you put actual research into cause it's something YOU'D like to see explored and saw everything else surface level just cause "your not a fan" it seems Also it seems the subject matter of the film flew over your head. It's pretty obvious that this film is tackling the struggles of adolescence, but also, the wanting to reinvent yourself to appease others and new and "cooler" social groups, and maybe the weight of expectations. So having emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment be the central focus and topic only makes sense, not to mention they are common and often extreme feelings around this age What really bugs me about your opinion is how u dismissed and flanderized these new emotions and I want to voice the facts Anxiety does harbor sum similarities to Fear, but it's widely accepted in most fields in psychology that they are very much different. Also your worry about Fear's purpose being null and void is misplaced. Fear's purpose is not suddenly gone just cause Anxiety appeared, Fear STILL has his purpose, to keep Riley safe. Anxiety explained her purpose, to plan for the future in general Also about Fear already representing Anxiety in the first film, that's just wrong. Anxiety is concerned about the what if's and the possibilities, while Fear is concerned about real threats, justifiable concerns and present dangers, tho at times can be irrational. Fear never plans for shit, he's all about the present, more in the moment compared to Anxiety. Which is a trait all of the core 5 emotions possess, they are purely reactionary, in the moment, they deal with the problems and don't plan ahead and are more concerned about Riley's present needs Anxiety however, compared to the others, looks at things more broadly. She plans things out and has a very pragmatic way of thinking. She also seems to represent "social anxiety" in the sense she didn't want others to know about Riley's true feelings and wanting to mask them to seem more appealing, which is something most teenagers do. She is very much a more introspective and thought heavy emotion compared to the others Only seeing Anxiety as only good for a panic attack scene is just insulting, gross and insensitive to how Anxiety as a feeling actually functions Your description and opinion of Envy reeks of ignorance and bias and really shows how misunderstood Envy as a feeling is. Envy and Anger are not similar, they are completely different experiences. Envy is a yearning for traits, abilities and possessions one feels they lack, Anger is an intense and passionate feeling one experiences when they feel wronged, if others are wronged, of if one feels threatened. To say they are similar is just straight up false. Sure Anger and bitterness can be paired with Envy, but that only occurs when one feels they can't achieve or obtain what they envy from the other person To say Envy is the most toxic emotion undermines it's inherit purpose. Envy is a sort of alarm, it points out things you feel you lack. That in it of itself is not innately toxic. It's a painful emotion yes but it can be helpful if utilized well. It can motivate you to aspire to be like the ones you envy/admire and even obtain some of the traits and possessions. This is the more positive side of it Also for her design, I personally think it's genius. Her small size visualizes how one feels inferior when experiencing Envy and her big beady eyes represent that intense yearning and admiration that comes with it. Also you say "it's not good to hide the negative aspects of emotions" as if Envy doesn't already have a negative reputation. To put Envy in a more positive light and subvert the common perception of it is a good move on Pixar, we already have enough destructive aspects of Envy in enough media Ennui, "the lack of emotion" like, WHAT??? NO??? Ennui (or boredom) is very MUCH a feeling, it's a feeling of disinterest, listlessness, an unpleasant and agonizing feeling when we experience a lack of stimulation or find the current experience dull and unfulfilling. It's also an alarm, but for a different reason. It's telling us that what we are experiencing isn't doing it for us and that we should move on to something else, but it can also spark creativity out of it I personally like their design. Perfectly encapsulates what they embody. Very lanky and lethargic and the fact they use their phone to control the panels is genuine genius. Also I'm convinced their design is based off of Bellflowers, which are often droopy looking which I find cute Also "how is Ennui supposed to make memories" who doesn't remember a boring memory? I remember several things that were agonizing due to how unfulfilling and unengaging they were. Also the grey memories are faded memories, memories that hold no purpose. It's less of, she doesn't care about a memory, more so they don't hold any significance anymore Now finally, Embarrassment, OOOOH my god. You just COMPLETELY dismiss it like it holds next to no purpose. Embarrassment is an important social emotion. It occurs when we feel like we did something socially unacceptable or awkward. It's a much more personal emotion, in that people feel embarrassment for different reasons, but overall it shares the same purpose, to make someone feel bad about their social or personal mistakes as a form of internal (or societal) feedback and not make the same mistake again. It has a purpose, sure it may be a sub counter part of Shame but it still has it's reason for existence Overall, I feel like this criticism overlooks the general subject matter of the film and dismissing everything you don't like just cause it doesn't fit YOUR ideals for the film. I did like your ideas for Anticipation and Shame those are well thought out, but the film is tackling a very specific topic and theme and the Emotions they chose for the film work well with what they want to tackle I was mildly annoyed by your dismissive attitude so sorry if I came off as a bit antagonistic, I just wanted to get my general thoughts out on this take. I'm very passionate about psychology and love talking about it and I will correct any misrepresentation of any kind of emotion

I think if Anxiety played their role to the fullest in making sure the OG emotions don't control Riley at all & the new emotions play in a similar manner while Joy insists every emotion work in tandem to naturally progress where she ended off in the first film, that might be best case scenario. But her character getting reset does worry me.

2 things I find really interesting that I wanna discuss One, there's a theory regarding the new emotions is that they represent "Secondary Emotions" where as the OG 5 are "Primary Emotions" As described in the theory of psychology "Primary emotions are direct emotional reactions to a situation, and they are called primary because they come first. It is your very first reaction to a situation or event, and they alert you about your needs." "Secondary emotions are the emotions that are often felt after the primary emotion has been experienced. They are the reactions to our primary emotions and are often habitual or learned responses." This tells me that these newer emotions are more self conscious, more rational, more concerned about Riley's self image, personhood and her future. The OG emotions were never really as rational, they are more reactionary more in the moment. They were never really concerned about Riley's image and overall future, they were more concerned about her well being in the present Anxiety (and maybe these newer emotions) could see them as a hinderance and get in the way of Riley's future with how little they prepare and don't care about their consequences. We saw this in the first movie when Anger gave Riley the idea to ran away, he didn't plan how this would work out in the long run, he only did what felt right in the moment. This is pretty much how all the OG emotions function, they don't plan, they act Second, the strings connected to the memories in that weird void is confirmed to be Riley's "Belief System" which make up her sense of self, and these beliefs can be heard when plucked. A very cool and creative concept. I feel like this movie is gonna be a battle for what Riley thinks she need vs. what she already believes in. Also regarding exploring the mind again, we see that the mind is under construction and new areas are being formed so there is gonna be new things to see despite that

Not at all. Judging a movie from a poster of it is like judging a book by its cover. Judging it off its trailer is like judging a book of its plot synopsis on the back.

I reckon it's less the fact that they didn't exist before, and more so that as Riley is growing up her emotions are becoming more complex. Therefore, instead of say having Fear also play the role of Anxiety, Anxiety is introduced to take that load off of fear.

I still really hope that they'll include Love in all this. The fact that there's 9 total emotions is very unsatisfying, and a big reveal of number 10 would be really good. I think Embarrassment's my favorite, wanting to curl up into a ball and hide is very relatable and I just want to tell him he's good enough.

im very excited for this! when it shows the moms emotions talking about riley acting like that for another 10 years, we see it’s the same exact emotion squad, so i wonder what they’re doing with the new emotions. will they fade into the background or will they maybe mix together with other emotions? will they fade away like bing bong? the last one isn’t likely but who knows, i love how she joy is excited to make new friends but anxiety tried to poke in and embarrassment ruins the moment. that’s very realistic. I hope the movie keeps a straight theme as well. not like the last movie, but not completely different either i can’t wait to watch, i wish it were june already!

Plot: Meet the Bone cousins, Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone, three misfits who are run out of Boneville and find themselves lost in a vast uncharted desert. They make their way into a deep, forested valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures. With the help of the mysterious Thorn, her tough-as-nails Gran’ma Ben and the Great Red Dragon, the boys do their best to survive in the middle of brewing trouble between the valley’s denizens. It will be the longest - but funniest - year of their lives in Disney's all-new original hand-drawn animated movie!

Does this mean that all these new emotions eventually die for people in this world? I mean we don't see them in anyone else but you could just say that the movie makers didn't think that far ahead and maybe we will see them in other people throughout the movie. Just something I thought about when I saw the trailer myself.
