Oh, that just reminds me of a recurring dream that I have had. Moving into a house or being in my own place and suddenly finding a room I never saw before and then another room within it. It is magical. You have the coolest house! The back staircase is what they called the servants stairs, and it led to servants quarters. It must have fallen into disuse when there were no longer servants in la casa. You really tidied up. I can't wait to see the next stage. Could you do some historical fact finding on the house? That would be exciting! Gracias for sharing this.

She tried to speak Spanish and English to my brother when he was little, so that he would be bilingual, but she gave up when English speakers couldn't understand him when he used Spanish words, so now none of the 4 of us kids speak Spanish. @@mar1na1993 Haha that's really funny! I took 3 years of Spanish in high school and 2 years in college, but that was years ago. I've forgotten most of it. I do understand why my mom gave up. My dad didn't speak Spanish at all. He met my mom in Germany when he was in the army. Her family moved from Spain to Germany when she was a little girl. So she and my dad spoke German while they were dating and my mom learned English after they got married and moved to America. Her family still lives in Spain/Germany, so we hardly ever saw them. I think it would have been different if she had family here. There would have been more people around us speaking Spanish and it would have been easier and more natural for us to learn.

I grown in a mid 19th century farm house, with lots of relatives and friends in the same kind of houses. Although it's in Quebec and not Nova Scotia, that extension is called summer kitchen, the main floor is a second kitchen (to keep the main house cooler in summer) and the second floor is an storage attic, usually served by a second set of stairs (but sometimes it just a wooden ladder). It's usually placed at the Northeast of the house, to stay cooled in summer and cut the Northeast winds for the main house in winter. I'm not sure if it's relevant to your house though, but I'm sharing just in case...

Maybe can find some salvaged ones that can fit in the space to bring more light in, or a sky light, and some vintage or antique lights I would also have someone come look at the roof and floor to make sure it’s sound and find out how you can properly support the roof and if any walls can be taken down to open it up and add more support elsewhere, also look at the fireplace and sealing the roof Also excited for all the book books, I feel a little spa area would be really nice up there. Your space reminds me very much of our 1869 home in Cape May, NJ USA. We enjoyed making the entire third floor into a master bedroom. The one thing it lacked was light...we sourced some salvaged stained glass vernacular windows and installed them in the gable ends and it was absolutely fabulous! Like all of the back work rooms and this giant space, it's so incredible! I had been wondering when you were going to tackle it because it has to much potential and even more now that it's cleaned up and brighter. I really cannot believe how much more space was up there too! I know you're a fan of reading nooks and that could be a really neat reading loft! I also love the idea that your bedroom is going to have a hidden passage way out, like that's some real dreams come true stuff right there. I'd suggest a bright color or fun wall paper for it. Ahh, this is really such a joy to watch.

I’m so glad it’s where debauchery happened, and not where people kept their crazy wives like in Jane Eyre. Also your mother is such a mood!

Honestly, I geeked out when you speak spanish as well as your mother. I am mexican and my family is mexican. Half of my family only speak spanish the other half speak spanish/english. So it was pretty cool to hear it lol. Anyway amazing vid as always, so calmy and soothing. -Bernardo Cisneros

I know this totally isn’t your vibe BUT I would love to see that room decorated like a old explorer hidden bedroom, like keep the secret aspect and make it full of old treasures! Almost like an old attic but clean and liveable hahaha

YES!!!!! I have been waiting so long for this! I found you through your tour of this space, what seems like forever ago! That was my intro to you, and I thought you were so funny and adventurous and brave and clever- I had to subscribe!! So excited to see what you do with it! I have a feeling that your house probably is haunted, just because it's so old, but you're not experiencing anything bad because the ghosts are all grateful for how gorgeous you're making the whole thing! ;D

The extra little room in the attic would make a cool walk-in closet if that's going to be the master bedroom.

Depending on how old your house is, the attic space may have been servant suite and that hidden stair is definitely a service staircase. Do some research on them! Kinda cool and definitely totally scary part of history that household servants would have to use those stairs in some mansions. But service stairs are a really neat historical feature of the house, and it would be amazing if you kept them. Same with that port window.

Just found your channel two days ago from randomly being recommended your wallpaper video for the throughway by your bathroom. I have since binged all your house videos and can't wait to see what you continue to do! This unexpected area is so large and I can only imagine how magical it will be as a master bedroom!! I know budget is super important as you tackle all the rooms, and especially with the kitchen still yet to be done, but if somewhere years down the road, you can add a bathroom to this space to make it a legitimate Master Suite, I'm sure it will be a relaxing haven!

Ariel, I like your book videos but I love these house videos! They are so inspiring. I bought a home during COVID as well and working on fixing it up as well. My home is only about 40 - 50 years years old though.I love your enthusiasm and use of colors!

    1. That part of the house definitely improved! Good work! 2. I loved hearing you speak Spanish! I wish you did more often! :D 3. Your mom sounds like a nice, practical lady. All the best to her and to the rest of your family! 4. I truly believe you should wear respirators or, at least, some kind of face mask when doing this kind of dirty work. :S You never know what's gonna come floating up and get into your lungs, and old places were built with some nasty stuff sometimes that could cause serious illness! So, please, be careful you both!
