I would've used the boys' axe, though the Gransfors is also excellent at making kindling. Still -- a little more weight is a speed advantage if you have the strength to keep it straight. A giant maul, not so much (not for kindling), but a boys' axe rocks, for me. Young Jackyboy will beef up quick, wrestling. He'll be whipping the boys' axe around like a hatchet soon enough!

It's good to see Jack again. Hadn't seen him in a while. I thought you'd have him on a video after the workbench series since you made it for him.
Love the shade thrown from Jack... “I just said they’re smaller”
Wrestling in my opinion, is one of the greatest sports for developing the youth as individual. Both mentally and physically demanding it really challenges you. Keep working jack and remember the only person responsible for your success is yourself. If you cheat to make the practice/workouts easier, you’re only cheating yourself. That’s a life lesson that’s stayed with me since I was in jacks age. Thanks for the great content, keep it up!
I saw it and sent the video to a friend who is aa machinist. He is making one for a senior of ours who is...VERY SELF RELIANCE

Thanks for the side by side comparison. I might actually buy one now 👍🏻. I have to agree with Jack and his comment on being warmer during the comparison. Like my grandpa always said “ when you cut your own fire wood it warms you multiple times!”

i havent watched you in a while. good to see jack is doing well. i have just moved house and dont have a fireplace but i saw this video and i thought it was a must watch. i didnt know that you could buy them. i have seen alot of home made ones and if i new i could of got one when i had the fireplace i would of gotten one. as much as i like to chop wood its nice to take it easy as well and i thought that did an awesome job of it
I am close to pulling the trigger on that auger. I believe it ships with an adapter for SDS roto hammers, which I think would just romp right through any conifer wood. It would also be a much longer (and, yes, heavier) tool, so you could stand on the raw wood as you drive the auger into it. No crouching that way, and you'd keep your support hand on the drill instead of exposing it to the auger bit.
What a fantastic young man you've raise Cody. It's crazy how big he's gotten. Please keep us up to date with his wrestling if Jack is ok sharing his progress. He's gonna do awesome!
Great alternative to ax ,I too wrestled ,I still have strong neck muscles from warm up exercises, it gives you pride and stamina, God bless Jack in his endeavors.
What's most impressive is just how much less effort it is to use the auger. Truly twice the result for half the effort!
God Bless You and Your's Cody... I'm with Jack even though I am in my 40's. The ax/hatchet seems more natural. Oddly at the same time I wish I had a spilter. :)

It seem's like it was just yesterday that Jack was climbing up into the cool treehouse his Papa had built for him... Boy time sure flies.. He's a good young man. Mama and Papa have done a great job. 👍
Love to see that Auger on some non 2 year aged dry wood. Preferably from the East coast where wood and people aren't so soft :D
I usually keep a stick in my non cutting hand to hold the log upright, so if i were to slip, my hand would be out of the way
The auger also leaves the wood stringy. I assume it would light easier like that.
When your back starts to go bad, like mine is, this screw splitter would minimize bending over a bazillion times. Also I use a DIY pike pole to pick up firewood anymore, so I'm not bending over hardly at all. Yet another great video, thanks again!
And nothing else matters on a banjo and stranding upright bass!!!... That was awesome!!
Great video! Glad to hear Jack is wrestling! I did for 9 years. It really shapes a person!
I love the little steal Cody made off the piece sitting in the middle.
I used to do this a lot with my grandfather, awesome job. god bless
That splinter drill would also be great to have in chain saw kit. If you get a bar stuck you can run it in and once the bar is out you can turn the drill bit back out. Maybe do a test.
Love Jack's sense of reality and willingness to express it.
Reminds me of the story of John Henry.

I love the idea of using that bit for kindling because theres times where i go through a lot of kindling trying to get a fire started but at the end of the day I love using my hatchet to split kindling
Wow! My foot is in my mouth on this one lol! I honestly didn’t think it would be more effective but boy was I wrong.... now I have to shift reasons and say I’ll choose the axe for tactile reasons 🤔? Lol ..... great video and great competition guys!!
It's good to see you working together. I first saw Wranglerstar episode when you were teaching Jack to fell and buck a tree. 👍❤🙏
What a handy tool! For me in my situation i see that replacing the wood stove side axe, sometimes i just need a few more pieces of kindling and dont want to go outside to cut more. Would be way easier to just grab this and a drill and trim a few more or make some pieces smaller.
Now we need a rematch with Jack on the drill and Cody with the axe ;)
Best of luck to Jack. I wrestled for a couple years in high school too, and it was a great experience.

@@nomekop777 nah with those lithium ion batteries, once they start reaching around 200 degrees, somewhere near that, they start degrading fast and take damage. Best things for the health of the battery is not letting it get too hot or cold, and not discharging it all the way everytime.

The two things that taught me the most about work ethic: My dad making me split wood, and my wrestling coach making me practice twice a day over winter break.
Spliting wood with the axe is like therapy, and the drill well it works.
Great to see another kid getting into wrestling it’s an amazing sport and I’d like you to pass some words my coach shared with me on to jack, the first season and a half he wrestled he didn’t win a single match and was getting discouraged but then the next meet he went out on the mat and won. He just kept on winning after that and in that second half of the season he went from not having a single win to competing in states and coming in in the top ~10. So keep at it jack and don’t let any losses keep you down, keep on splitting wood and you’ll have some crazy grip strength for controlling your opponents hands.
I'll still take the axe all day, well my kindling axe. It's a full size head on an 18" handle.
@charlesreohr6236
4 жыл бұрын
The axe he was using was not designed to split wood. It is designed to cut down or buck with. an axe with more of a wedge shape and heavier would have been 4 times easier to use.
@DK-jd8bj
4 жыл бұрын
My kindling axe is a sager double bit cruising axe. I choke up all the way and usually use knot free larch. I can split a box full in just a few minutes. Definitely won't be switching to a drill. It just doesn't seem right but for newbies that want to save their fingers it might be a good way to go.
that thing plus a cheap drill press seems like a nice combo.
A modern power tool beats a piece of metal on a stick. Yep. Sounds about right.
When splitting kindling personally, I fit an axe head face up in a vice, place the wood on the blade, hit the back of the wood with a mallet, splinting along the grain. Works for me and it’s safer for the fingers, but the auger seems to work well too.
But when your battery dies Jack can keep going lol.

Hence why you gotta pick up extra batteries when on sale.
Good for Jack picking up wrestling. I wrestled from 1st grade through to 12th grade and had a lot of success with it and it taught me a lot. I hope Jack enjoys it. If nothing else it's a great experience
Try that auger on a pneumatic drill! I was drilling some 3/8" holes in 3-1/2" treated lumber yesterday with my DeWalt cordless drill. I got through 8 holes before the freshly charged (and fairly new) 14.4V XRP battery gave up the ghost. So I switched over to my new Jet Tools JAT-621 pneumatic drill (running off a cylinder of nitrogen because I didn't feel like dragging the compressor and extension cord to my project). What I found was that the pneumatic drill was much lighter, with MORE torque, and it ran flawlessly through a LOT more holes without ever bogging down or running out of steam. I would have needed at least 5 charged batteries to go through what the pneumatic drill did. It was amazing! Drilling with the JET drill was faster than with my DeWalt due to the higher torque, and because it's lighter, I was less fatigued. I think in the future, I'll relegate the DeWalt to smaller jobs, and reach for the pneumatic for the larger ones.
Great video. Surprising results. Jack is really good with that axe. He has great a great teacher's in life.
Good luck enjoying Wrestling, Jack! hope it helps you in life. You already have a great mentor/role model/father to learn from. I am sure you will be just fine in this crazy world. Cheers to you both! @Wranglerstar
woah... the intro music got me... i didn't know what that was at first and then..... "HEY, I know this song!!"
That's excellent quality kindling. Luckily, I've never had to produce kindling from logs. I've just filled paper yard bags with dry twigs and small branches.
I’d like to see a variety of wood tested. I imagine that bit would have a lot more difficulty in some burr oak or white elm or most deciduous woods with less than straight conifer grain structures

a tip for Jack to make cutting kindling easier. put the blade of the ax on the block where you want the cut then lift the block with the other hand and smack it down. this will sink the blade in and you won't have to worry about the wood falling over. a trick my grandpa taught me. a couple of times will have it where you can lift the ax and the wood stay on the blade or you can just cut it through that way.
Good luck jack I was close to being on the Olympic team. If you need anything or have any questions please reach out
That auger is the way to go. I didn't worry one time that you would loose a finger. I was holding my breath when Jack would hold that wood and come down with the axe. Nice competition!
Your boy is getting BIG, man! Nice. I have a son named Jack too -- blows my mind how quick they grow. Having a son who actually knows how to be outdoors and split wood -- alone -- is a significant achievement in today's age. So great you have him as your pal to do man stuff with -- he has a big leg up in life not having wasted all his youth in front of a video console.
This video has a dual purpose. You're making a lot of kindling you can use (which is great :) I'm jealous of your massive wood piles/circle stacks lol. I don't think the auger bit would work well with hardwoods though. Though I guess you want softwoods for kindling anyway (if you can get them).
For me it would be the sound, I love the sound of the axe biting into wood, something very warm about it. The drills makes me tense lol
Feels incredibly good, to see there is some sort of real family life around the Wranglerstar. That´s nice to see! My husband love watching your channel. I guess his commentary would be: "Funny drill, but the boy took the wrong axe" ;) Regards from Germany

But that drill could never compete with the benefits of a good old axe... ;)
I ordered a set of these kindling splitters but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. Think I'll like them.
Good demo, thanks for sharing. Take care.
Jack is right about the axe for making kindling, it's definitely a way to stay warm while you're working. Winter exercise as well
It may come down to optimizing the axe technique by keeping the wood under tighter control. There's the log in an old tire method, or using some kind of rubber band around it, to keep it in place and together while you're splitting it. Something like that should work for kindling as well.
Axe, chain, and bungee cord! Fastest why to split fire wood and making kindling
the point made of starting with split pieces then work to kindling. i have started with a section of log and used the drill bit on the bark (outer edge) to make my smaller sections. it works just as effectively. give it a try. drill press would be the ideal piece of equipment to use for sure.
Sounds like the drill would be an advantage for splitting wood inside in poor weather situations for those who don't have a sheltered place outside.
Good Luck in you matches Jack!
Dang! Jack is growin up, his voice is almost as deep as yours
Where has this tool been all my life!? Lol. Great video!
