Ultima is one of my favorite characters because his pettiness while not giving a fuck that he is dying is just something I can't help but respect. His last words are essentially "enjoy your shitty world bro, fuck you" and then just dies.

The thing I like about Ultima is the question, is he *really* a bad guy? Sure, from human perspective of his world he wants to end them. But he created them. They are an experiment that he no longer understands, and that's almost sad. He doesn't understand concepts like love, loss, grief. And so the idea of a reset doesn't bother him. To him, he's just trying to do something great again. And his own "children" are disobeying and keeping him from doing what he truly believes is right. Fuck him, though. Clive woulda made a better god.

I'm one of the people who absolutely fell in love with the characters and the world. Valisthea felt so real to me with its bleakness, yet hope around every corner and shining in the people themselves, but I can understand people not preferring how they approached it in terms of the nature of side quests and stuff. It also had some of the greatest moments in gaming that I've ever experienced, and that alone does so much for me in terms of this game pushing the boundaries of what's possible in video games and storytelling. 9/10 minimum. 12/10 OST Soken limit break.

I agree. Doing all the side stories fleshed out a lot of the what the people were going thru and I enjoyed most of it. The music was insanely good. I did give it a 8.5/10 because some of it dragged on a hair too long. However, that could’ve been because of the way I was playing. I did all the side quest before I continued with the main story.

@@bigty81 I did them all and found them the weakest part of the game by far. All that time needed to be spent on characters that were interesting like Jill or Gav. Make them involved with the side quests the way Remake and Rebirth did. More time with characters I like and care about instead of characters whose names I can barely remember after I finish the game like the old lady shopkeeper or the Dame. The fact that you have as much or more interaction with those characters than you do with Jill and Torgal for most of the game is a crime imo. Still give it an 8/10 for good action and a strong overall story.

I took the ending as a far out future where the events of the game were forgotten. I believe that the story was made so that the world can remember in some way of the events that took place and that the author being "Joshua Rosefield" was equivalent to how Clive took on Cid's name so it could live on.

@@Dizzy1407Valisthea was literally dead by the end, Clive said it best, “it may take generations, centuries even” when speaking to Joshua about the trials they would face after defeating Ultima. It’s evident Ultima enthralled the majority of mankind into being akashic with the rampant aetherfloods he caused after casting primogenesis, on top of all of the destruction caused, I’d wager that’s enough to set humanity back a couple centuries, and into the literal Stone Age in the case of Valisthea. It is constantly regurgitated to us just how much the people of this world rely on magic, to the point that they haven’t developed any worthwhile technology that works independently of said magic.

the side quests were a huge problem, and i feel like the lack of good rewards really held the game back. the game really needed unique weapons, armor, items, trinkets, and character story/progression. many of these side quests were a bore because they were simply wastes of time, you didn’t connect with anything or earn anything except for 30 wyrite and 30 sharp fangs to craft another stat boost even though you probably have like 400 of each crafting item from encounters

The popular theory is that, if you finish all of the side quests at the end of the game, there's a lot of talk about Clive putting down his sword when everything is done and writing a book, in addition to multiple people telling him over the course of the story to save himself. Joshua was in the process of writing a book, which he never got to finish because he died. People think Clive resurrected him, but Joshua said it himself that even the Phoenix's flames cannot revive the dead, the spell Raise also would not do this not that Clive would if it could because he needs all the Aether to cast the spell to restore the world and rid it of magick. Regardless, we see Clive and if you watch closely only the hand that he casts magick from, including Raise, turns to stone. It does not visually spread to the rest of his body despite how fast it had been progressing. And the theory is that it's because he rid the world of magick and thus negated the curse, but it took a moment to completely fade which is how it still claimed his hand. He then passes out. Per Jill, she prays to Metia for his safe return all the time, but the wish was likely never granted because Clive was never in mortal danger and even if he was Ultima would probably step in because he needs Clive. But it was finally granted at the end as indicated by the star going out because Clive was knocking on deaths door and there was no Ultima to intervene, it really was now or never. Jill assumes it means something bad has happened, but she has also said that when the sun rises she knows he'll return or be there, and that last shot is the sun rising on the horizon and she looks almost stunned and then smiles despite just being in the throes of grief and it's not like the sun never came out prior to this there was just some cloud cover, it's not like XV where it was just gone for 10 years. So he ultimately finds his way back and finally settles down, and takes Joshua's name as a pen name to finish Joshua's book and have it be his living legacy. Clive is the one telling the story from start to finish and is the only one that witnessed the entirety of the final battle and its outcome. Personally I don't think it's a fairy tale. It is by the time of the post credits scene, with the book being the only account of those mythological times in Valisthea's history, but the events really did happen. I wish the ending wasn't so vague and up to interpretation, but it is what it is. It's just like how with XV's ending the fate of Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus is left entirely up to the players imagination because we last see them squaring off against multiple Iron Giants and not long after that they would have lost their powers. Word of God had to come in after the game was out to confirm that all three survived.

I dont know man, if clive is really alive then why dont they just show it as a happy ending and have a closure. It seems that the theories that you mentioned are legit, but i think its more like a wishful thinking instead. The ending itself is obviously leaning towards that clive is dead, but people are just looking for "excuses" on how clive could be still alive only so that they get the ending that they want. My personal take is, unless that square enix releases a ff16-2 or a dlc that confirms that clive is alive, then its most likely that clive has really died in the end.

I agree with the "challenging Clive" bit especially. One thing that occurred to me is that Barnabas should have killed someone. He kidnapped Jill, but he basically said himself that Clive was going to have to save her in order to get the Eikon, so it's not like she was in real danger. If Barnabas had killed Mid, or Byron, or Gav, I'd have been very sad, but it would have challenged Clive a lot more than just a punch from Joshua.

I honestly don't think even another death was needed, though if I would have chosen one, it would have been Jill to give Clive Shiva much the same way that Cid did. What needed challenging more is IDEALS. I think there should have been more back and forth on the side of The Hideaway on whether what they were doing was truly right, or the actions they were taking just. We do get some lip service to it, but you blink and it's resolved. Hell, with Ultima trying to prime Clive as his vessel, where was a conversation about just killing Clive to deny him? Just more interpersonal conflict amongst the good guys would have been nice.

Cid getting killed off early almost felt like a mistake because he was always there adding witty comments and lighting up the world with them, made the party feel so much more alive. Once he was gone, most of the parties you go through just feel awkward. No witty comedic remarks or heartfelt comments outside of a few moments (like that team up with Byron and Gav). It’s just mostly silence… There WAS this one time where the party members were finally going to interact like how parties in rpgs should when Joshua comments how it feels so good to finally be together with Jill and Clive again, then Clive tells him to shut up and get serious like ??? Whats with that ?? It’s like the game’s mocking the players who want to hear this. Totally random character break too ?

Same, I much prefer FF16 for narrative, characters and combat but overall I think 8/10 is fair. No story grabs everyone. Imo Clive is their best protagonist since classic FF and whilst Ultima is just an okay villain I would disagree with Max in saying that Ardyn is the second best FF villain. Sephiroth and Kefka interchange positions for me. I think they should've made Barnabas the main villain and expanded on his story because his character was triviliased and was wasted potential. Despite missing some stronger sense of party I think this game has some solid supporting characters namely Joshua and Dion. Jill had a lot to offer but imo was sidetracked outside the Iron Kingdom arc. And I would also disagree on his point that there was nothing in this game particularly special, I think at its peaks this game was monumental (but the flaws are too noticeable to ignore).

Even if you consider it too much story. At least FFXVI doesn’t require a movie, an anime, multiple DLCs both released and cancelled, and a novel to get a complete story. Even if FFXVI gets DLC, it will feel like an addition rather than sections and levels pulled out of the main game on release. Game was literally a complete novel.

This is the most accurate depiction of the post credit scene. For me, it was something to take in because I had taken a children’s literature course last semester and knowing XVI takes around the Medieval/Middle Ages, it’s only fair to say that the main events took place in a distant past. Clive’s entire journey can be viewed as a Legend in that very context.

I really do enjoy your take on the story about Clive and the lack of conflict in the second half. In storytelling, it feels more natural that even allies dont always agree on matters, especially when it comes to morals or ideals. While they may act together, schisms are common, especially in darker worlds when the paragon good choice isn't always the availiable option. With the story in FF16, i get the impression it is trying to have its cake and eat it. It has this grim, politically charged world where people are enslaved by the instance of their birth, and the world that is dying from the use of magic that is the crutch of humanity. But in the end, all the various antagonists and their goals mean nothing because its all the game played by Clive and Ultima. The baddies were all an evil gods' pawns, and Clive is a chaotic good archtype with a scooby gang that follows his every decision to the letter on a journey to kill that god. It's not a terrible story, just confused. Like the pre cid arc was trying to tell a very different story from the post cid arcs. And whatever theming behind becoming a wanted outlaw to save the world from its own people has no nuance because there's no questioning whether it's the right choice. Ultima and the crystals have to go, or it's the end of the world.

Ironically this is the fault of not having a core party. When you have a party you have a set of characters who get to respond to different events/emotions/beats of the story in unique ways. Give them personal character arcs and development, and you've got your character depth for the game. Now all the peripheral characters don't need to be over-developed at the cost of the main cast and story. They can be relatively one dimensional and still be liked because they aren't there to provide character depth, they're there to provide world depth. The lack of a true core party meant they had to struggle to develop pretty unimportant peripheral characters to TRY and give characters some depth, but the problem is that they don't get to go through all the fun stuff of a story when everything they experience is through word of mouth.

Without knowing whether Clive is alive or not, one thing I've been stuck on is how Jill's entire story feels pointless now if he is dead. Not to sound like a hopeless romantic, but it really doesn't make sense to me to just kill that entire story arc when so much time was invested into those infernal side quests and of course all of the main story plot points. Joshua's death felt kind of inevitable as soon as he absorbed Ultima, yet he too may also be alive with Clive being all powerful when he uses the Phoenix's power on him (he of course could have just healed the wound). But if Clive is dead, it just feels unnecessarily sad and I don't really know what to make of that. I think the main narrative of the game holds up throughout, but I am in total agreement with Max, it's probably capped at an 8/10 due to all of these little quality of life things that made the game drag on and on, ultimately taking the immersion and excitement for the main story away.

I don't wanna pretend its a 10/10 game. It's not. But yea after Cid dies, the games pacing falls off hard. And wayyyyyyyy to many sidequests after they drop the final boss fight at the end. Twitch's bit rate, especially during that Eikon fight - that must've been hard to see what the hell was going on when watching this live. The reason why it can’t be a tale told by someone not in the story is because it is narrated by Clive. Other Final Fantasy games that have had a narrator or historian tell the tales have used a different voice actor for it. But here, we have Clive narrating which together with other pieces of evidence shows he wrote the book.

I’ve never seen a game where so MANY people are divided on, but then again it’s Final Fantasy, and every new final fantasy is something innovative/different. And the fan base will always be divided on it. But I agree on the some points made in Max’s Review mostly about the story and middle point, it’s like the side quests took the main priority over the story in the 2nd time skip. But the Eikon Battles, Music, Characters in the first half, it really drove me in. The amount of talking for side quests reminded me on Witcher 3 but without choices. Anyway idk about liking FFXV more than XVI is.. definitely a interesting take but I can say that the rpg elements in that game is DEFINITELY what was needed in XVI, I just hope FFXVI has DLC to expand upon, or do a Persona 5 and make everything 10x better heck even make Ultima actually interesting. All in all it was a amazing epic experience, although I felt the length halfway through its a solid 8.5/10

It delivered memorable music, beautiful character moments, and bombastic setpieces. The first time skips Clive coming to terms that Josh is dead, being enslaved to the empire, branded and put into its military force and a once royal member now being discriminated The second time skips the hideout slaughter aftermath, the people mourning the loss of Cid and others, building the new hideout, and new people coming in. Clive growing to be a leader of hope. They could've removed all the side quest junk to fill this and enrich the story.

I agree with Max on having more things like minigames, variety, utilizing the tools the battle system has to offer and the general conflict whether it's an action game or an RPG. I think for the DLC they should have new superbosses with completely different attack patterns and minigames. The ending I think is kind of left from many perspectives. Which you can get from playing the last of the side quests. FF mode is a lot more fun. I felt that FF16 did address a lot of criticisms for FF13 and FF15 which it focused on worldbuilding and side characters more. Which was great.

As soon as Ultima revealed his plan, the entire story and the character intrigue just falls apart. Everything was just Ultima pulling the strings, none of the characters' struggles were real, countries had no real political reasons, all the citizens were just suffering because Ultima wanted to feed Eikons to Clive. I think that was basically my main gripe with the game, because the parts towards the end of the game where they kept throwing tons of harder enemies and bosses was the most fun I've had gaming in a while. The combat system is so fucking tight and satisfying, I wish they got rid of the trash mobs, and the slower parts of the story, and made it way more action oriented. However, the story had me gripped the whole fucking time, and I really feel that this is a pivotal game for the FF series. I'm so happy it exists. 9/10 for me

Weapons is just talk to the blacksmith or Charol to buy a new one. I feel like the blacksmith should be focused on upgrading stuff you can find in the world, because it's either broken, or unknown material. I can't often say the same thing with other games except maybe Xenoblade as a whole. If this somehow gets DLC, I'd be back on this game frame 1 without a doubt. But I do agree with how little variety there is in terms of gameplay. No real minigames to do. Just main story and side quests with hunts, but even that goes into amping yourself up along the way. By the end, I found myself to be busted and more so when entering NG+. Still in the works on that Platinum trophy, though, at the time of writing this.

What ff16 struggles with is character relationships outside the main story. I feel like it was a colossal mistake to not have more overworld dialogue and personal side quest. For example, the only character in the game that I felt had a shining personality was Cid. He was filled with, but other characters didn’t have nearly as much. And it shows, it’s hard to name any of jill or Joshua’s personalities outside the basic noble hero stuff. If the game simply even had more overworld the character relationships would feel real. You can run around the areas for hours doing side quest and the characters don’t say a peep. This could be easily remedied but it just wasn’t

The founder isnt Ultima. He, the Founder, was one of the fallen. After their crushing defeat at the hands of Ultima, the founder decided to cut his losses and stop moping around like everyone else among the wreckage and start building a small tent for himself. Then a hut, then a house. Others saw him building and decided to join him and before long they had a small village, then a town and it kept growing from there to eventually become Rasaria

You'll probably never see this but I think you should have a part released of this with the long version of your thoughts on the game. I saw your FF7R run and really wanted as much of your thoughts on it as possible and it was cut short, just like this one. Maybe it's just me but your thoughts on the game is why I watch this. And yeah it's on twitch but depending on when people see this, that'll be gone

Maybe I'm missing something but I always took the book during the post credits scene as actually being written by Joshua. Clive uses the Phoenix power to heal Joshua after he beats Ultima, and it's not out of the question that he (magically or otherwise) got Joshua out of origin.

Yeah. People are projecting their own hopes onto the ending and wishing that Clive somehow makes it. I don’t like that Clive dies any more than they do, and I think it was no better than when Noctis bit the big one in XV. There’s no way he lived. He used Phoenix’s healing power and Ultima’s creation power to resurrect Joshua and then burned himself out completely. He’s dead. Metia blinking out is as symbolic as it gets. Joshua wrote the book to honor Clive’s sacrifice and to preserve the history. It’s not more complicated than it appears.

@@kinggoldark3853makes no sense , he didn’t resurrect him Joshua was already dead he just healed his body so it won’t look bad

@@oof8888 You wrote this in a different thread and I replied to you there. In short, this only makes sense if your interpretation of the ending is that Clive lived and wrote the book in Joshua’s name, so Joshua must be dead. Clive is not Amerigo Bonasera from the Godfather, cleaning up Joshua’s body for an open casket funeral. He resurrected his brother after he absorbed the power that let him do so.

I really enjoyed this game...but the slow areas in the game (quests and such) really hurt the game in my opinion. I'm with you where I think I enjoyed 15 a little more. Overall its still a good game.

I really want a DLC where you could play a different path with more RPG elements and where you could recruit and play as the dominants and maybe even play as Joshua the whole game through his perspective and maybe even gain a new ending through him.

The Endwalker track at the end threw me for a loop.
