Alright it was pretty funny watching Cory go on for 15 minutes about how impossible that stage would be only for it to be a 2 minute stage that Chris effortlessly beat while having to ask Cory what the controls are because he hasn't even played the game before. Cory is truly the Sonic expert.

@@s--b he helps make propulsion engines in his on clock hours, and then proceeds to propulse his brain with greens off the clock. i can see it and believe it somehow. it's why his heads shaped the way it is, it was originally designed to help dock with ships and space stations, at the slight cost of some cohesiveness. we love him dearly anyway

so when this game came out, one of my friends who loves sonic is a paraplegic and also half-blind wanted to have someone over so they could play the game a bit and share the experience with him. I was at his house for about 5 hrs but i beat the game in 4 and I was holding in all the criticism i had bc i didnt want to ruin the perception of this game for him.

In short, Sonic Team is the B team at Sega and if you perform well during development, like hit deadlines, make good assets, etc., they just move you to the Yakuza team, Yakuza being the priority franchise. So they're constantly bringing in new people to Sonic Team, which doesnt create good cohesion.

@@jonfro-mez The entire time Cory has said how awful the game is, and only Chris and Adam were praising it because they weren't playing it. Adam got mushy brain, but Chris likes analyzing game development so he's a lot more softer to criticize games visuals since he knows how hard they are.

Cory, with Sonic Movie 3 releasing later this year, force Chris to ACTUALLY finish Sonic Adventure 2 for this channel! We should prepare ourselves for greatness!

The issue wasn't that the game had new level designers, it's because it had only 3 level designers, while other boost games hand around 6. The game's primary dev time was only a bit over a year, which is probably the real culprate of the game being so small

Making Tomar in any create a character brings the episode up a full letter grade.

I think Sonic Forces actually highlights a problem with game difficulty we don't think about. Sonic games have a problem where the highlight of the games are usually how well you can flow through stages. You're having the most fun when you're not getting stopped by stuff. But at the same time, when that problem isn't there? It feels automated if you're not getting challenged well enough. Really, I think it boils down to how the game can't really set difficulty levels for stages. Realistically, harder stages should have trickier jumps, more difficult things to traversal, and harder enemy placement, that skilled players can flow through, but still have to challenge themselves with. But when the only thing a difficulty can feasibly change is usually just how many hits you can take, or how many hits an enemy can take, it's really hard to imagine how they even COULD. Redesigning a stage's layout based on difficulty is such a massive expense that it's not really feasible to do.

@@TheRealBlazingDiamond what i want out of sonic games is the unleashed day stages for 360 but more of them and longer and more branching paths, and with no little sidekick. sonic should feel nauseatingly fast but its really about the conservation of momentum like parkour so the game is about reaction time, not 3d platforming.

It's because of the movement mechanics of the boost games. You can't have much in the way of risk vs reward in terms of movement options because you just have grid-based movement that happens instantly from the push of a button. These games are basically rhythm games, and the only way you could make them harder is by decreasing the time between each input. Generations tried to give the players more choice by adding more intersecting routes, but there's usually only a single objectively best route and once you discover it, you just do the rhythm inputs. I think a lot of modern boring game design stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of flow. They're too scared to make the player feel frustrated because they're worried it's going to kill their flow, when in reality the thing that ruins flow the most are stuff that interrupt the player. Like dying really only sucks if there's a long pause after you die or if starting back from a checkpoint feels repetitive and unengaging (which usually stems from gameplay and level design as oppose to checkpoints in and off itself). Sorry for the rant ^^;

Exploration is also pretty underutilized. I get that the Sonic joke is “gotta go fast” but what makes the games fun (imo) is finding secrets and shortcuts. Forces is way too linear and bland to make exploration fun
