Big fan of Audere JZ3. I dropped one into a $140 SX Ursa 6 string bass, and it instantly made it a killer bass. The best deal of them all, IMO.

I really enjoyed this series. I have a Sadowsky and love how simple and effective the pre amp is. However, for the price the low frills Audere was the most impressive. I would LOVE to see a P bass pick up review with vintage voiced and modern throaty voiced pickups. Keep it up Lobster!

My Favorites were the Lusithand NFP, the Sadowsky and the Audere Jazz. If I had a Jazz bass I wanted to upgrade I would probably just end up with the Audere Jazz as it is the cheapest path to a simple good sounding preamp, but that Lusithand is very interesting and I would be very temped to go that direction. This kind of stuff is great! I don't think there is any other channel doing bass mod comparisons like this. I think a good one to do would be Precision bass pickup swaps, there are so many on the market it would be great to hear the differences.

I like the lusithand preamp the best. Ive never wanted an active EQ based bass but theres something about the versitility of a filter based active bass thats always appealed to me and not having to spend £30,000 to gst a bass with such a preamp (like you would with a wal/alembic) is the icing on top with it.

Great series, lobster! I'd choose the Sadowsky preamp for my JB, if I wasn't already using the Radial bassbone outboard preamp. The overall sound quality of the Sadowsky is just awesome. And it offers passive mode, too. I was quite impressed, how much the active circuit improves the tonal definition even without any boost or cut. And the amount of bass/treble boost perfectly fits the Jazz Bass characteristics without sounding artificial. Just tasteful!

Thanks Lobster. Entertaining series! Could you please do a modern 1x12 cab shootout? Berg vs aguilar vs epifani vs ashdown vs vanderklay! I expected more back to back, direct comparisons of tone in this roundup to be honest. These help a lot and a quick A/B clip highlights subtleties of electronics. What about G&L pickups and pre in a jazz?

  • @rickrolli7091

Thanks for doing this Lobster. The drop-ins were all a little different. My favorite would be : 1. John East 2. Sadowsky 3. Lusithand 4. Audere Pro Z 5. Audere. I liked the variable but decently adjustable John East and really appreciated the clean boost & tone of the Sadowsky. Lusithand was just so interesting that it really is in a box all by itself because of the filters. Pro Z seemed a bit hard to deal with and you'd have to "monkey with it" to get the tone you wanted. So there'd be some messing around with it on the front end to know how you'd like to use it. For future ideas. Hmmm. Different pickups in jazz basses and their tonal differences within the same V3. Or Super mods. How to take you bass to "the ridiculous level". A/P controls, preamp options, bridge options, tuner options. I've given you a lot more here than I think I did. Well... Good options for other videos.

My favorite was the Audere Jazz preamp . It's funny that those pickups are a "budget " ceramic pickup and worked well with most of the preamp . I'm going to try to find that Audere jazz bass preamp for one of my player j basses . I'd like to see in the future some of the EMG plug and play j bass systems in the bass . Great series!👍🏻 I'm going to have to check out the Stingray vids now because I have one of those too. As for what next? I'd suggest a few. First, a Jazz Bass pickup guide but not just any old JB pickup, have a noise-canceling shootout/guide. There really aren't a lot of videos on these other than DiMarzio's. I'd particularly love to see a good look at some Seymour Duncan Apollos and the Aguilar HC's. Are the Apollos as close to vintage as they claim? Other than the ones I listed above, I don't really know of any others besides Fender. Maybe someone else has a different one they want checked out. Then go to the P Bass pickups but also cover preamps as P Basses don't seem to get preamps put into them nearly as much as Jazzes do. Why do you think this is? Maybe P Bass players are just less likely by nature to tinker around. Hence the preference for a single pickup. One last thing. I believe you looked at the Ray 35 but it isn't available lefty. However the Ray 5 is. Have you looked at one of these yet? If you've already covered some of this sorry but I'm kinda new to your channel which is a lot if fun btw.👍🏻 Keep up the good works Lobster Dude!😁

How about a parts J bass that is converted to a Thunderjazz? How about reviews of the Mama humbucker (Italy) direct replacement for the Casady signature bass, as well as the Daguet Bisonic pickup that fits in the Casady Elektar cover? Daguet Guitars named it the Dagstar. I really think Casady’s bass is a winner, but they chose to pot the pickup with epoxy. Do they lack definition? A survey would say… You could also round up a used Ibanez Artcore semi hollow, single pickup, and install a BSDS, Daguet or Mama pickup in it. We’re just scratching the surface now.

I know from experience that the mid-sweep is high-sweet. So the John East would be my choice, as it has already been. Having said that, the Lusithand thing got me really curious... some unique tones came out of that thing, but it's dead expensive. Maybe next year :). About things to check out, I'd really love to see a serious head-to-head comparison of strings, as experiments of this kind can get very expensive, and this can be a series of videos for example first video would compare roundwounds, another would compare flatwounds and a third one would compare those covered with various coatings. I'm not sure you'd want to do such a thing as "strings" isn't really a modification and I know you love your cutter, soldering iron and... not so much your electric drill :)

If you do strings, please don't limit it to brand vs brand. I am very curious about materials and manufacturing process. I've used Dean Markley cryogenic Blue Steel strings for years because my sometimes aggressive style broke so many low strings, but those held up. Recently the Ernie Ball Cobalt strings have been winning me over on my more vintage basses. I've never tried the M steels, nor many of the modern coated strings. I had such a Negative experience with the coded strings years ago that I never felt any desire to try any.
