Good on you Sarah.. The you show more moxie (yeah I'm old) than most people when facing unexpected problems now a days. Before you spend too much money on that brake light issue, look under the dash for the brake light switch on the brake pedal assembly. Many Toyos have a switch that clicks off (switch acts like an interrupter) when you let go of the pedal. The switch presses back against a little rubber pad, on old cars that pad breaks off, and the brake light does not go off any more. You can pay for a new rubber pad or you can replace it with a nut and bolt in the hole where the pad goes. A quick test is to just press on the switch when the pedal is in the resting position. Good luck.

The rubber pad disintegrated like the one on my 1988 Corolla FX. If Toyota doesn't have one, go to Lowes and use one of their rubber plugs. Again, love your channel. Keep up the good work!

Sara, take a look at the MaxJax mid lift. If you have 8 or 9 foot ceilings (clear of lights, garage door opener, etc.), the mid lift will allow you to roll around under the car on a stool, making things much easier. Plus the lift can be removed when not in use.

There is a rubber button that plugs onto your brake pedal. It sits between the brake pedal and the brake switch. If it is missing your pedal won't press the switch to turn off the brake lights.

I had a similar problem with my brake lights staying on in my MR-2 Spyder. It's just the brake light switch mounted above the brake pedal. Simple fix. I just wanted to say that it makes me happy to see someone keeping the MR-2 name alive. I am a true Midship Runabout enthusiast.. First, second, and third generation.. I love em all, especially my Spyder. Anyway, I hope that helped a little. This is the first comment I've ever made on anyone's videos, so please don't judge me too much..

measure the aluminum line. get a corresponding diameter heater hose to fit over it. ie 5/8 - 1/2 - 3/4 ... cut the aluminum line at the leak. slip the hose over the line and tighten a stainless clamp on each end of it. the brake lights issue look at the pedal . there is generally a physical switch that gets depressed with the metal of the brake pedal. I have fixed that issue with a bungee cord in the past

More than likely your brake light switch isn't bad, it is probably a missing/broken brake pedal pad ( little rubber pad on the brake pedal assembly that contacts with the switch). It was one of the first things I had to replace on my 93 MR2. I thought it was the switch but my pedal pad had literally disintegrated, replaced it with a fresh one and haven't had any problems since and I am up to 255K on the chassis.

The fix at the stealership required me to buy the brakelight switch with the plastic piece for 90 dollars. Fuck that.

Previous owner probably used the wrong kind of switch. I was following a car to work one day, wondering why they were riding their brakes as the lights were hi. Til we came to a stoplight and the lights went out. Once we started again, they came right back on, they had it wired backwards (using the wrong switch). I've seen other cars where the backup lights were wired to the brakes. WTF do people do that?

  • @hamishr

Kevin Trust yup, Toyota’s of this era and age suffer from perished rubber switch stops, the little rubber/plastic push in insulator stopper pad that sits at the top of the brake pedal pivot point. They perish and fall out and the switch then think the pedal is partially depressed. Easy fix a few bucks from a Toyota dealer.

good work with your clutch line. a bit of oil when you do flares is also not a bad idea for the flare to move into the line. from my 4AGE fun, if it cranks but doesn't go ; injectors are a thing - they may have gummed up. watch for that. the fuel pump priming is good ; it will have a circuit opening relay which is there to shut it off when it doesn't get STA sense from cranking but when running it will keep the relay open. your brake lights on will be the brake light switch on the brake pedal. with your heater line because they are like 14 billion miles long under there get it up on a hoist, pull it down then get it brazed mate. top work sarah keep up the awesome work mate!

Check your brake light switch. Since there was no click when you turn the key I would use a test light on the starter solenoid there is usually a small wire that activates The solenoid have someone turn the key to the start position well somebody checks for current current at the small wire. This will tell you if you have a starter problem or electrical problem

@13:17 brake lights are more than likely stuck on because the little rubber bushing that supposed to be on the brake pedal is probably missing it's what pushes the switch off for the brake lights when you take your foot off the pedal. When you put your foot on the pedal the little rubber stopper will disengage from the switch turning on the brake lights but if the rubber stopper is missing the switch will never be depressed when you take your foot off the brake so the lights will never turn off

Good to see the progress on Mr. Dos. So close... You'll get it started soon. This is the worst part of any build....almost ready, but not quite. If you still have access to the Auto Hobby Shop on base, you can get it on the lift there. Don't know if they'll allow filming or not. And a SSgt "Little Sara" appearance too. Neat!

Bye little Sarah be careful! With the brake lights I am sure a million comments on here are for the brake light switch. Also the rubber grommets rot and fall out. I just use a bolt, lock washer , and nut to permanently fix it.
