Yep, got one of these this Week. Even though I do not live at the address anymore but still own the home. This is because I have cancer and mobility issues so have moved in with my parents. I have told them the property is empty and still they threaten with those stupid letters.

I stopped watching/recording live TV (and using iPlayer) about 5 years ago. It was only 2 years ago that I finally cancelled the licence. I'd been very nervous about doing it, as I thought there was a good chance I'd get prosecuted, even though I actually didn't need a licence, or get constant hassle from the goons. It was Chilli's videos that gave the confidence do to it. Many thanks, mate. (My only regret is that I didn't bin it off sooner.)

The law states you are innocent until proven guilty. But it's the opposite of TV Licensing and the BBC. They seem to think You are Guilty until proven innocent.

Yeah... To be fair TVL isn't the only thing where this sort of assumption is made. There's a little known company called HMRC that can state pretty much anything to a court, and you better be bloody well sure that you're 100% innocent of EVERYTHING they claim. AND can prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. In triplicate. Else you will be deemed to be guilty because you can't prove you're innocent.

They should be not allowed to do this, but they get backing off the big ones.

There is no requirement, legal of otherwise, for anyone to respond to any letters of this nature.

We’ve just cancelled our TV licence today . We only watch catch up services, KZread and Disney+ and with one of your recent videos informing that the licence fee is going up we thought, “Why are we paying this?” Thanks for all your videos with the information that people need to see. I’ll let you know how quick we get a sales person at our door. Don’t worry, I know not to say anything and my wife also knows that they cannot come in and not to talk to them.

Any other corporation using this level of harassment would be ALL over the news channels...they are all complicit in this, the mainstream channels, I have seen no reporting on this insidious and troubling behaviour on any one of them.

My daughter received a letter from the TV license people saying they watched this and that in specific rooms of the house. Weird, she wasn't even in the house, she was here at home as it was the Christmas break and in fact, there wasn't a single person in the house at the time they said. She got really scarred and I was like "ignore them" and sat and had a conversation with her about the tactics they use. She was like "how is this even legal?" - I had to then explain how ruthless they and now she can relax. It is truly awful how they treat people and this really needs to stop.

They have no way of telling what anybody watches at any time at all. There is no way for them to find out this information unless you invite then in, you foolishly admit to anything, and even more foolishly, sign anything. Just close the door with a polite but firm 'No thank you'. Nothing could be easier.

Ha ha, like it! I was planning to just say "no thanks" and shut the door if/when I get a visit, but I like your strategy better. Make them feel uncomfortable. They couldn't give a stuff about us, so why should we care about their feelings?

I've received every variation of the TVL threatogram, I don't even open the envelope these days. I would laugh, but I can imagine how terrifying these letters may seem to the most vulnerable people in our society. The wording is devious in so far as what they say COULD happen may be technically correct (e.g. they can APPLY for a warrant, BUT NOT without sufficient evidence) and their intent is to instil fear. If any other 'reputable' organization adopted these methods, it would be a scandal.

These letters should have a line right at the top in bold letters saying 'Please ignore this letter if you don't watch or record live television or use iplayer'.

Had that same letter just last week and on two previous occasions and I'm still waiting for a goon to knock on my door. Trouble is, the government allow them to send this type of threat 'O' grams.

I made a no licence declaration and they ignored it and kept sending me letters. I have now received 20 of them in 2 years. I will never buy a TV licence and I have no intention of ever buying one. I use Amazon Prime and Netflix. Interestingly I recently was away on business and I stayed in a hotel with a TV in the room. I refreshed my knowledge of BBC and god was it crap. It just reinforced my opinion of not watching it. If the licence was free I still wouldn't watch it.

Canceled my tv license over 2 years, received all the threatening letters of a visit, ignored them all, and threw them in the bin. The letters they send out are quite intimidating and play on people's fear of a knock on the door from them. Even people who genuinely don't need a tv license will buy one out of fear of being prosecuted for not having a license. If you don't watch any live tv broadcasts from any recognized broadcasters, you don't need a tv license. If tv licensing sends you letters saying you do, just ignore them, if you receive a visit from them politely say no I don't need one, and close the door. Don't enter into a conversation with them.

Our sons just had a letter saying just that .he knows it's not going to happen if and when they come .lock your gates ,dont answer the door .you've broken NO LAW AS YOUR NOT WATCHING TV .

I cancelled my TV licence a few months ago. I actually commented on one of your videos. I even got a letter saying they'd contact me in a couple of years to see if anything has changed. A few weeks ago I got a visit. He said your licence has run out so I'm just going to fill out a new direct debit form for you. I said no, I don't need one. He was shocked! I'm autistic and suffer from severe anxiety. I came in and called them up telling them about having cancelled months before and got told 'oh there was a mistake, I'll make sure that everything gets sorted' Well just over a week ago I got one of those very threatening letters. I phoned up again and the lady said they'd not completed the cancellation and that she'd send me a cancellation letter. I asked for her name which she gave me and a reference number. I still haven't received the letter. An elderly neighbour who doesn't own a TV was very distressed when she got the exact same letter the next day. She's waiting for a visit and was talking about having to let them in her house. I told her everything I've learned from your videos. Its disgusting to frighten the elderly this way!

I’ve had the exact same copies of theses letters many years ago, but I have no idea what’s in the letters that I get now… because they all go straight in the shredder without being opened. 😂

That doesn't work, but will make you feel better. None of these gets returned as TVL have a system with the PO to not return these letters, but discard. Best if you send to your MP asking why they are permitting harassment. Explain how they are impacting on your mental health (nice big tick!) and to keep you informed of your queries progress as they investigate.

If I get a letter addressed to "The Occupier" I check the postcode, if it is unwanted, such as TVL, I put "not known at this address" or "gone away" - "Return to sender"

Don’t return the letters, each letter and envelope has identifying codes and marks that tie to your address, so if you send them back it will flag up on their radar that someone is living at your property. Put them in the bin or shredder, never communicate with them in any shape or form and stay under their radar. I have been living in my own place for 35 years and never had a licence, I’ve had 2 visits in the 1st 10 years to which I just closed the door and haven’t had one since, i shred all of their letters without opening them. My address is on their mailing list for the letters but They don’t know if my address is empty or occupied or even if I exist. It is the same as spam texts or emails, if you reply it will flag up that they have found a real person and it will trigger the sending of more spam emails and texts.

@@robg521 100% with you on this, say nothing do nothing is the best way to deal with the scum. All these doorstep debates/withdrawals of implied access, returning of threatening letters and aggressive attitude to the goons if they call only encourages them and helps them to get a warrant

It seems like the only reason they get away with it is because these letters are only classed as "slightly misleading" and not "entirely misleading" according to BlackBeltBarrister.

I got one of these yesterday, hilarious. Even if they do get a warrant, unlikely, you have to be in and answer the door for them to be able to enter. They can't pick your lock and enter.

I open the letters to confirm that they are from tv licensing, then bin the letters.

I bet the BBC hated the day when fast internet, smart TVs, firesticks, Roku and Chromecasts became widespread. Think of all that revenue gone - and more people seeing the light every month!

I moved into my 1st flat in 1988, them moved to my own house. And I have never had a TV licence. All of their letters go in the shredder unopened, and I have never had a problem. I had a visit at the flat in the 1st year, I never spoke to them, just closed the door, they didn’t call again. I had a visit at my house in the 1st year, same agin I just closed the door and 30 years later haven’t seen them since. I've written to the BBC about these letters! How dare they send these letters only once a week. I want more two a day the price of toilet paper nowadays is ridiculous. So it's a welcome relief to receive a TV licence letter butt BBC letter could be a bit softer and absorb better. So BBC do better by making these letters softer I be sending a couple of used letters back to you BBC so you get the idea!

Got one yesterday for a house thats not been built yet. Postman put through my door (New housing development) saying they're "sending the boys round" as no one had responded to their letters. 🤦‍♂️

I haven't had a licence for over 12 years, I still keep getting the letters, I still put them in the bin. It must have cost them a fortune in postage.... As yet, never had a visit but I know what to say if they do visit 😉🤭

Surely by now we must be able to return the gesture and be in a position to send them a threatening letter which has a 'legal' tone about it? Any lawyers out there could come up with an isea?

I think in the last 15 years of having no licence I must have seen just about every variation of these begging letters and I'm at the point where if a letter doesn't have my name on it, "return to sender", back in the post box. I include junk mail in this category as well so my postman must hate me when he empties the postbox. I have never had a visit, never signed anything, never spoke to TVL (Capita) and never rung them up....

Apparently this would be no good at all, as the BBC have an agreement with the Royal Mail not to accept these return letters. You'd be better off sending it back in an innocuous looking envelope, handwritten.

my best mates wife let the goons into their house last week. me and him got back to their house in time to see them going through BBC Iplayer's history to prove it hasn't been used which it thankfully hadn't. we kicked them out and hopefully she wont be doing that again.

Hi Jon have you seen the BBC questionnaire the BBB had it on his channel , the questionnaire will confuse a lot of the public , as I was but I would advice to avoid at all costs.

After being conned for a TV Licence fee for many many years I just had my refund of £90 after declaring No Licence Needed I fall into the over 60s age group Thankyou Very Much for your channel

I wonder if any of these really wealthy families (stately home types) have ever received a visit from Capita???. Would love to see one of those made in Chelsea types receive a threat from the BBC...I may actually pay to see that lmao

The way you present your video blogs is very reassuring and must be appreciated by everyone who watches your videos especially those that are finding it hard to make ends meet right now. Keep up the good work buddy.

Bearing in mind we are looking at a criminal offence, what kind of ACTUAL EVIDENCE is TV Licencing required to produce to meet the standard of proof 'beyond reasonable doubt'? THEY have to prove your guilt; YOU do NOT have to prove your innocence.

Having been recently threatened by a letter just like the one you describe, I do thank you for the reassurance you provide. I am one of countless people who don't use or want a television service, and who are systematically harassed by arrogant, pseudo-official poison pen-letters accusing me of criminal behaviour. My last letter from them had a headline proclaiming in bold print, 'You have 10 days to get correctly licensed.' and said that the 'Enforcement Officer' would appear on a certain date, a date which passed about 2 weeks ago with no one showing up.

Impossible situation where if you were watching live tv for say 5 years, thats a savings of $1000 by not buying the licence but when caught, you only pay a few hundred to the court unless they can prove you been watching 5 years and then the max is 1000 fine anyway. Cant be enforced and expensive to do so and some are paying while most are not so not equatable.. Here in Aust we just pay a few cents? a day automatically to fund our ABC and i thing thats how the UK will have to do it as people see these videos and realise the goons cant look through their windows or force entry to get evidence and you just close your door...

I got one of those last week. Straight in the bin

Waiting for the letters to start coming, think I’ll just bin them without opening them if it’s clearly from them on the envelope.

Just cancelled on behalf of my son who is disabled and doesn't watch live tv. Amongst the statements is "You need a licence if you watch live on streaming services (e.g. All 4, Amazon Prime Video, NOW, ITVX, Sky Go) ". I checked Amazon Prime has started to stream some live programmes, but if you don't watch them you don't need a licence.

I received this letter in November, 2019 - I file them all away. Since then I have received many giving 'ten-day warnings', 'will I be in?', 'Investigation escalated', 'investigation in your area', et cetera, warning me of visits from the scary salesmen. So far, since 1972, I have been visited twice, both tens of years ago. 'Who are you?' - 'TV Licensing' - 'No thanks', door closed does the trick. If you do have a salesman visit, keep your thoughts about Jimmy Savile, Gary Linaker, political bias, and the optional nature of this subscription service to yourself. They've heard it all before, it will do no good, and your loose lips may incriminate you, even unintentionally. E.g. "Blah blah Jimmy Savile!" - "Oh really? Did you see him omn Top of the Pops?" - "No mate, I turned to ITV whenever his fizog came on the screen." An admission to watching TV, maybe recorded or witnessed by a second salesman. Whoopee! off to the magistrate for a warrant, or "may we just step inside to clear this up?"

You are right, it is threatening and intimidating and OFCOM should stop them.

INTERVIEW YOU UNDER CAUTION. Let us remind ourselves of the CAUTION. "You do not have to say anything " ....... So don't. Close the door having said nothing.

Could be someone from the Lottery telling you you've won £20 million!

I filled in online no licence needed,I recieved confirmation from tv licence that I wouldn’t hear again for 2 yrs or unless I tell them of any change, since then I recieved 4 of their letters and a salesman calling at my home, I again have contacted them to tell them I’m not a licence needed user and to stop sending me letters and callers of salesmen, I expect to recieve more letters and maybe a salesman calling , now if they do can I pursue a claim of Harrisment ? I have all the emails from them.

All these letters are obvious where they are from without opening them. I now write "return to sender" and put them back in the post. Hopefully, they have to pay to receive their own crap back

Good strategy but steam it open first, put something heavy in the envelope like a coaster or thick cardboard, glue it back sealed THEN send it back. They'll pay for the weight of it too.

That doesn't work, but will make you feel better. None of these gets returned as TVL have a system with the PO to not return these letters, but discard. Best if you send to your MP asking why they are permitting harassment. Explain how they are impacting on your mental health (nice big tick!) and to keep you informed of your queries progress as they investigate.

Dear sir/madam" .... "proceed with the final stages of our investigation" Sounds like their crack team of elite investigators isn't very competent.

Investigation = another bluff letter, same as the previous.....🤣🤣

If they require a reply they should send a pre paid envelope.

I moved into a new property, and I don't need a TV licence, as I don't watch 'live' telly, or BBC services. My daughter watches Netflix, Disney+ and her fav KZreadrs, and I download other US shows/films. I never told them, that I live here, and still down as the legal occupier. My last letter was in a red envelope, which scared my elderly mum. I had to reassure her that it's just intimidation tactics.

How do they know, if the TV still works without it, is not like the TV don't work if you don't pay the licence,just leave them out in the cold 🤔 😜

Over the last 5 years of being Legally License free , I have had around 30 letters and one visit from a Morissons/Data Goon and another from TV License /Goon ! I have not had a Letter for about 3 months , and if they come to my door , I'll say what , Albert Steptoe might say " Up Your Khyber " then close the Door ! 🤣🤣🤣
