All three contestants read the clue as it was intended to be read because they all wrote their answer starting with "What", now if the two contestants that lost started their answer with "Who", then we could argue that the clue was misunderstood. The credit for the losing contestants reading skills was underestimated and the credit for them knowing the full name of "The Game/Franchise" was overestimated by a lot of people.

That's a good point, but the question is mentally a bit confounding because both of the hints, including the series and the name of the wife would leave you with just "Zelda," while the specific first game would be "The Legend of..." while in the back of your mind you know you and your friends colloquially just called each and every game "Zelda" and when you needed to differentiate you used "Link to the Past" and "Ocarina," etc.

To everyone saying the question was badly worded: First off, no. The title princess OF THIS GAME. This is always the operative word in Jeopardy. Second off, the contestants clearly understood what response to give, since they answered WHAT is Zelda, not WHO is Zelda, so they clearly knew the title was required, not the character. They just either a) Used a shorthand, which Jeopardy never accepts, or b) didn't actually know the title of the game, but knew the name of Fitzgerald's wife. Demanding no shorthand here is especially important for catching out those for whom the latter is true, as that is not the knowledge required.

It is kind of a BS question. It says "The title princess of this game". 4 жыл бұрын

@Victor Charles a.k.a. VicGChad07 That logic (inaugural title = series name) falls apart when you consider how many series out there have a total name change for one reason or another. Nobody calls the Rambo series "The First Blood series". Nobody calls the Mana series "the Final Fantasy Adventure series". And then you've got oddities the 007 series, where not a single movie has a related title, and nobody's calling No Time to Die "Dr. No 25". Persona 5 doesn't even mention Shin Megami Tensei on its Western cover due to the Persona series now having more pull than its parent franchise. If the question alluded to being about Persona 5, but they actually wanted Shin Megami Tensei, that'd be a serious load of BS despite it technically being true. And while I'm at it, what about regional differences? What series does Final Fantasy Mystic Quest fit into? That's its American title, but in Europe it's called "Mystic Quest Legend", implying it's the sequel to Mystic Quest, which is the European name for Final Fantasy Adventure, which is the American name of Seiken Densetsu. Seiken Densetsu's sequel was released as Secret of Mana internationally, followed by Secret of Evermore, the second game in the "Secret of-" series. Except I tell a lie, because Secret of Evermore is not a sequel to Secret of Mana. It was developed by a separate team under the name of "Vex and the Mezmers", and was changed to associate itself with Secret of Mana to help sell the game. Secret of Mana was followed up by Seiken Densetsu 3, but only in Japan; and then Legend of Mana, which was just a spinoff, not the fourth game in the series, despite no clear cut reason why. Dawn of Mana was the international name for Seiken Densetsu 4. So what even is this series' name? It's "Mana", but it's a retroactive series name. Magazines at the time talked about Seiken Densetsu 3 as "Secret of Mana 2", even being referred to as such by Square's own newsletter at the time. The game eventually got a 2019 release by the name of "Trials of Mana", though it could have been completely different had it been released in the 90's. The titles of series of works of art are arbitrary and don't have to follow a strictly monolithic set of rules, because they're art. Trying to apply strict rules to the naming of such series is a fool's errand.

Yeah, it is kind of BS that those other 2 weren’t counted, as only saying “Zelda”. These days technically any game, spin-off is still considered part the Zelda franchise as opposed to Legend of Zelda, because that title aspect only holds true for core Zelda chapters, arcs, etc. Honestly had to facepalm that when he said not the name or the same franchise. You’re also right that the clue was rather asking for who, not what. So technically they weren’t even wrong, but their ?s we’re.

I thought the solution was "Zelda" at first, then I went back, reread it, and both answers could be right, because "of this game" is a prepositional phrase modifying princess. In Jeopardy, the solution is usually worded as a question regarding either the subject or direct object of the sentence. The problem here is the second and third clause are written ambiguously as to which terms they modify in the opening clause, and the clue is about an indirect object. They should have moved the terms around more like this: "This game, which launched a best-selling franchise, features a title princess who was named for F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife."

+JawaKiller No, because I removed "of," changing the solution from an indirect object to the subject of the sentence making it clearer. If you remove the prepositional phrase, "of this game," it would read, "the title princess, which launched a best-selling franchise, was named for F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife." The second clause is the confusing part, because it is not clear if it modifies the subject or the indirect object, which is bad grammar. It was clear to me after I reread it that the focus was "game," but it is not clear due to the ambiguity of the last two clauses.

JawaKiller Not at all, in fact I respect and agree with your original statement (minus the "learn to read before saying dumb s**t part"). What I was trying to say was that since Chewtoy didn't say something along the lines of "That's bs, they should've gotten it right!" like others are, I didn't feel the condescending tone towards him was necessary. I just thought it came out a little harsh is all. My apologies if my 1st comment wasn't clear. :)

I don't see how it's confusing, personally. They have to say "the title princess' because if they specifically say the word "Zelda" that practically gives away the correct question and makes it more like a $200 round 1 clue than a Final Jeopardy clue. And Alex even says it himself, they're looking for the name of the game/franchise (both are identical, The Legend of Zelda being the full name of the franchise and the name of the first game released in it) and not the name of the princess.

Well the point is that they Answered off the fact that they probably based their answer on Fitzgerald's Wife - Not because they knew the game series

The answer is worded poorly but grammatical correct...family feud does this from time to time. The better way to word this would be... The title princess was named after F Scott Fitzgerald's wife in this best selling game franchise.

Most people call it Zelda and the question was worded awkwardly, but if I was on the show I'd write The Legend of Zelda since that is the true name of the franchise.

To all the people that criticized the question, none of the contestants were confused. This is evident by the fact that none of them wrote "who is..." they all wrote "what is..." They just didn't know the full name of the game. They may have just been guessing based on knowing Fitzgerald's wife's name.

Yes, Zelda is the princess and they were asking for the name of the game, not the princess. However, people still do refer to the games as Zelda (i.e., the Zelda games, just like the Mario games from Super Mario, the Sonic games from Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.). I don't think I've ever said "I'm gonna go play the Legend of Zelda" compared to "I'm gonna go play Zelda." The other two got screwed out of the question imo. They clearly knew what franchise they were asking for.
