It’s really up to you what you want to believe. I personally believe he survived. The side quests hint at his survival and I think of them as easter eggs for people who completed them. But there really isn’t any right or wrong answer until the developers specifically tell us which I don’t think will happen.

@@Athreousule #1 if they don’t show someone die, they can be alive. They specifically showed his hand turning to stone but lingered on it for a second and you can see the curse stop at the wrist, they wouldn’t show that if it was meaningless. There’s also the matter of the hints in the song lyrics and side quests that point to Clive being alive. And I don’t believe Yoshi P would put these stuff in the game just to eventually say “He’s dead lol”

Honestly felt bad for Gav the most. He's Cid's most loyal ally and even after his passing, Gav still continued to support his cause. When he saw Jill crying and starts to break down himself, that's where I lost it. Gav already lost two Cids. This game really has a lot of interesting character outside of the main ones (Clive, Jill, Cid, Torgal and Joshua). Gav, Goetz, Mid, Charon, Byron and many others from the hideaway and I haven't felt this attached to these side characters since FFIX.

The fact that you can argue whichever angle you want when interpreting the ending is perhaps the best example of this game really nailing it’s theme of “living and dying by your own choices”. This was my first final fantasy game. I really enjoyed it. There were parts around the halfway point that really dragged but overall it was an enjoyable experience. I loved the cast and Clive is one of the greatest video game protagonists I’ve ever seen. Ultima when it comes to villains though was very generic and one dimensional. As a character, he’s pretty subpar. But when I was playing through the final boss at 7 am staying up all night Sunday night/Monday morning determined to finish the game, I thought about something. Clive is literally facing his inner demon. The fight all takes place in Clive’s head. So when you think about that, Ultima is a much better psychological threat and works much better as a concept than as a villain. An antagonist can be anything, and Ultima is definitely meant to be a villain, but he really serves as a great psychological threat and concept for Clive to overcome at the end of the game and complete his arc. When I started thinking about Ultima that way, I came to appreciate him a lot more. He’s not a good villain, but he’s a good antagonist

When Benedikta already had a strong villain presence I had high expectations for the Antagonist. Felt disappointed when I realized it will be generic Ultima, but the last mission made it better through ways you describe. Fun fact: Xenogears (arguably best jrpg story ever) had the same thing that god wants humans only to recreate himself, but the real Antagonist is the Barnabas of Xeno who wants to free humans from suffering. That felt much better.

I agree. While they may not be the most charming, or relatable of villains, he works so well as Clive's idealistic opposition. Freedom vs control. I think this is the main theme of the game and it is consistently pushed throughout the entire game. Symbolized by the destruction of the mothercrystals. Also, it is also fitting for Clive to be the antagonist of Ultima. A god vs a character that is the embodiment of the human spirit. Throughout his life, Clive grew without the love of his mother, being casted as a slave, then free'd himself of it, became a rebel to bring a new world order, and then knowing love. He symbolizes the struggles of huma s. I really liked Clive as a character.

The happocrates guy in the side quest did suggest Clive to pick up "pen" by resting his sword. I chose to believe that Clive survived. CBU3 kept going on and on about paying attention to symbolism and quests. So with Jill’s whole Night and Dawn comment in a side quest unlocked right before the end, the quill, Clive’s talks about never breaking a promise again then promises everyone stuff, Vivian’s whole side quest before the end about how the truth depends on how many people believe in it, etc. They left it ambiguous and then gave us so many reasons to believe either direction Clive’s fate could’ve gone. They clearly want us to interpret it our own way so it was very easy for me to believe he’s still alive because I love happy endings.

Lets just agree, the music was absolutely a banger all the way through. from the remixed tracks for garuda and titan, to the final fight, and the end scenes. Honestly. 10/10. I will say i do hope square gets enough y'know, reactions feedback etc, to get a DLC with jill and torgal and whomever else and atleast give us a 'happy' or y'know, atleast a better ending for the two, so they can move on. I've never really been attached to characters in a game outside of final fantasy 7 (mainly from childhood.) So this is really a first one that i've wanted a happy ending for a team of characters. I think if it was a DLC of jill and torgal adventuring with like Gav or something, and either finding a hospitalized clive as a 1 armed wonder, and jill and him can be happy im all for that, you know the MC had SO SO SO MUCH GROWTH. And the moral of the story was litterally living and surviving, them killing clive off just feels like a waste, and is nothing but tragic for Jill. They honestly deserve a happy ending i feel, not a bitter sweet one. ALTHOUGH. Damn you Square, you pulled them heart strings man, if that was their aim it was a masterpiece, i think it and zelda will easily EASILY buck for game of the year as of this moment. And it'll just come down to loyalist of Zelda vs the story telling of final fantasy 16. If it was a more 'happy' ending with clive and jill managing to be together in the end. (DLC CMON BBY) that be my game of the year for sure, it's already there honestly. That isn't to say square didnt do a bang up job either, the game was beautiful, gameplay was fun (You'll love FF mode, im enjoying it so much) And the ending was like, 99.99% perfect, but y'know, pray for DLC. Atleast in my eyes.

Call it copium or hopium or what not, I think Clive survived and we are reliving his story that he chronicled in the "Final Fantasy" book he wrote under Joshua Rosfield name (as Harpocrates suggested he should do in one of the sidequests) to honor his fallen brother. Clive narrates the game, the beginning sequence and the end sentence is also spoken by him and exactly how the book would begin and end. They could pick any other VA to do it, but they chose Ben aka Clive. Many clues from sidequests and how Jill acts in the end also point to it. People only talk about her crying, but almost no one speaks about her smiling at the dawn (sidequest reference). Metia vanishing/loosing her light can be interpreted as a falling star - granting wish. Many people think Joshua survived (maybe) but I don't think so, unfortunately, no one can bring dead back to life, not even the Phoenix (as it was stated in the story) and Ultima's powers doing it is just too random and pointless to the story to happen. I HOPE Square won't confirm or deny anything. Endings like this should be for the audience to interpret, there is no point to do it like so and then say it happen like this or that. Ending would loose it's purpose if they ever touch the subject.

Clive is not dead at the end of the lore writer questline he gives clive an pen to maybe he becomes an writer someday, so he wrote the book in joshua name's to maintain his legacy. The narrator of the story is clive to the end even in the book part so the narrator cannot die to narrate. Also joshua said himself that phoenix cannot bring others from death so rip joshua so clive attempt to revive joshua with phoenix power was in vain and we don't know even if Ultima could bring others from death too. And Jill at the end is relieved because the sun it means that metia last resort before she fades was make jill wish come to true. Yoshi-p said symbolism is very important in this FF as well the questlines especially the last ones optional such as joshua and jill. Leaving all that aside i hope people start complaining and Yoshi-p say something or give us an DLC or even longer version of the ending, because people are done with bs open ending in games lol

clive wasn't trying to revive joshua, he was just patching up the hole in joshua's chest because he didn't want joshua's remains to be defiled by what ultima had done to it. also ultima never says he was going to revive his kin, he just says he was using the aether gathered to awaken them from their slumber. do not believe there's any entity that could bring back the dead in this series. also tidbits: one of the side quest you take jill to the flower field and she goes on a soliloquy on how clive always comes back despite how bad it gets at dawn, so she'll wait for him as the sun comes up. i wonder if the DLC will be about leviathan dlc or taking the enterprise beyond the twins continent since thats what mid and jill wanted to do after all this was over.

The new baby being born and the dawn symbolize new hope for the new generation, no more slaves. This is what Yoshi-P meant about hope. Jill's side quest was meant to be a depressing one because as the player we already knew of Clive's deathflags and his empty promises to comeback for her will never come true. Many misunderstood the phrase she said "No matter how terrible the night...dawn would always come" it simply meant that life goes on. With this context for the ending, it's Jill forcing herself to smile for Clive so his death will not be in vain and she would be eventually be able to move on. Clive has also mentioned how much she her smile brings him so much joy during their sexy scene. It's bittersweet actually considering he promised to return... but didn't. The book "Final Fantasy" written by "Joshua Rosfield" at the epilogue doesn't have to be written by Clive or Joshua themselves. We have several side character scholars from Hideaway who are introduced as story collectors/archivers - they are Harpocrates and Vivian. We can also see them teaching a lot of kids and values the importance of history. It can be a biography of the people who wanted to preserve the legacy of the brothers and their gift of freedom. When you go to Harpocrates, it looks like Clive is telling him his story progress with the pixel art animation of old Final Fantasy games and Vivian is updating the lore as we move on. E.g. Jill is "traveling companion" in one of her text but was changed to "in love" if you reached a certain point. The story's main theme is - "Legacy" to pass it down through generations. We knew from the beginning that this story isn't going to be a happy one with everything that was presented to us all throughout the game.

@kei7540 If my theory is correct, then i don't think we'll ever see the dominant for Leviathan. I realized that the only other time that lost has been used in the context of the Eikons is Titan Lost. My theory is that a dominant via some form or another needs to lose control of the Eikon they were born with and transform into their full Eikon form. Then they need to roughly do what Titan did and consume a massive amount of aether that it transforms them into their most powerful but also most primal and at that point they're lost because it's the point of no return and it's a guaranteed death. If you look at the corpse of Hugo after you destroy him, he's crumbling apart due to the amount of aether that flooded his body by eating the mothercrystal. Hugo Kupka was most likely near death and completely insane at the time of the final phase, only thing keeping him going was killing Clive.

Food for thought, this was a comment from Yoshi-P back in a May interview Yoshida: [laughs] For me, it's actually not really different. I kind of approach the FF16 story the same way I approach expansions for FF14. I think a good script is something that doesn't give all the answers at the end. It invokes a lot of feelings. It makes people think... it leaves a little bit of doubt there at the end. You're going to have finality in the main beats of the story, and you're going to get those answers. But there's always going to be that door left open a little bit to get people thinking. Moving forward, when people get the game and they play it, and they love it enough that they want to see more... We've left the door open a little -- just enough so that we can continue and can show more. But for what you're going to get on June 22nd, it's going to be a complete experience that you're going to be able to enjoy from beginning to end. Imo they wouldn’t leave the door open to DLC just to confirm Clive is dead

  • @BradleyDS90
    @BradleyDS9011 ай бұрын

It could be interpreted in many ways but people seem to forget that Cid basically had most of his arm petrified before his death. It was ailing him probably for years prior. So it is VERY possible that Clive's hand alone could have been petrified and stopped there as magic ceased to exist at that point. Also, there are many things pointing to Clive writing after his journeys. Tomes gives Clive his prized quill pen at the end of his quest line. And there is also a quest line where Clive says once his journeys are over, he may put down his sword and pick up a pen. The game's writers could have planted this into the game to make people think one way but honestly who knows. The writers leave it open-ended for interpretation because it gets people talking about the game / story. It's possible that Joshua could have survived because Clive healed him at the end. It could also be possible that Tomes or the Undying wrote the book in Joshua's name as they would have knowledge of the events due to all their research and Clive / Joshua relaying information along the way.

@@gavo7911 I think Clive fully restored Joshua's vitality with the power of Ultima and he essentially did that before wiping/burning magic and crystals from the world. But he could have saved Joshua during the breaking of the crystal with the remaining Eikonic powers. Remember, the idea of memories does not really matter at the end, for the story could have ended in any way. We saw the story from Clive's perspective, but Joshua's will existed until the very end with Clive. So if Clive revived Joshua, Joshua presumed Clive did everything he promised. And it's not like the book is gonna describe how he fought Ultmalius. With those taken to consideration, I believe Joshua lived a fully hearty life with Clive's blessings and lived a new life in the new world (world without magic) Clive created. You gotta remember, Clive is essentially God of that reality then.

so were the eikons the bodies of Ultima's people they gave up? wish his race or whatever was explored more or we could see some of his people go against his plans.

So I did some research because I was in denial about the ending and I found some stuff that may also imply that Clive might of actually made it out like for example the devs said that there will also be things in the world that will help tell or fill in the blanks to the end of the story like example there was a side quest where Clive mentions after all this is over he wants to write a story and what do we see at the end of the game a book written by “Joshua” there is ZERO implications that Joshua was writing a story and also we got confirmation Joshua did die Clive was the only one who made it out of origin and also it wouldn’t be the first time Clive took some one else’s name in a form Of “dedication” so it could mean Clive lived and did make his way back to Jill and those kids could very much be his dependents (that’s just a theory) also people believe that the redStar burning out at the end wasn’t Clive’s death but to symbolize his return and that the Star did indeed grant hills wish for him to come back to her she also prayed again before he left and there is a lot of lore about people making a wish on that star and it is said that if enough people put their faith into it that wish will come true or something like that also there are people that also say the song that they play at the end tells the tail of Clive coming back to Jill the devs said the end of the game is very “hopeful” and that there are things sprinkled throughout the world that will help u come to your own conclusion to the end of Clive’s story so have faith he might of at worse lost his left hand but he can still live through that it only kills u if u turn to stone completely and watching it closely it looks like it stopped at his wrist so he might still have been alive and just passed out from exhaustion

Also the Phoenix only heals flesh’s wounds it does not “bring the soul back to a body that’s dead” you know what I mean hence why Joshua couldn’t bring back the dead and he only lives after fighting Ifret because that secret order found him and patched him up it was t due to the Phoenix power so that’s why I say Clive wrote the book

I think Clive is alive. He returns safely and celebrating a memorable party like Straw Hat crew style with all other fellows. He finally marrying Jill with the coolest wedding ever held in Valisthea. He become a story writer while opening Chocobo farm and workshop. He spends the rest of his life together with Jill, Mid and Torgal 👀🔥

So I cannot stand bittersweet endings. Many times it feels like the writers just wanted to add one last emotional gut punch right at the end without any other reason. I kinda feel the same way here. Clive dying doesn’t feel right to me. Struggling so much to have a happy life just to not get it in the end. That feels wrong. Yeah he got to choose his death, but also not really because he had no other choice if he were to save the world. It may be copium but I hope he survives and only lost the hand because he deserved to have his happily ever after with Jill

There was one Eikon that was missing from the game which Joshua mentioned the name Leviathan Lost back in Ash. Assuming when Clive said that Ultima's power was too great for this vessel, was it due to the vessel being incomplete without the power of Leviathan perhaps? If so, chances that YoshiP might do a DLC about it which would give us an alternate ending of What if. Joshua said that not even the Phoenix can bring one back from the dead but what if a complete vessel with all eight Eikons and Ultima's gift has the power sufficient enough do that? After all, Ultima's aim was to recreate the world using Clive as it's vessel to channel the spell so what's to say that if Ultima's gift is powerful enough to bring one back from the dead. That's just fanmade theory I had in my mind all this time so please go easy on me if I missed something there :)

Clive is actually alive. The narrator of the story can't die. Joshua's fate is 50/50 however cause Ultima wanted Clives body to use Raise. Which would revive his race. Phoenix alone cant revive the dead, Ultimas power combined with it can. That's why Joshuas fate is ambiguous. I see the comments and people clearly didn't do the side quests before the finale or read Vivians and Harpocrates notes.

Fantastic game, maybe i'm just in denial but there's still a chance that Clive suvived after using the spell because we technically didn't see him die soooo i refuse to believe he's gone, i hope we get an advent children type movie where they show us the cast after the game

Thus, did our journey end. That's the final line of Clive's book. He wrote it. He's definitely alive, but the writers had to do the open ended so people continue to discuss it long after the ending credits, it also creates discussion around wanting a DLC. We also have Leviathan that is clearly mentioned in the game but doesn't appear in the game. The game has been breaking sales records over in Japan, it's a huge commercial success so DLC/sequel is almost guaranteed, in my opinion.
