I mean come to think of it, she was one of the few people in the entire globe willing to believe Tidus and ALSO help him learn abotu Spira. She was the one who wouldn't give a care in the world about religious conflict. She trusted Rikku too, remember? And she just doesn't care what people think about her. Wakka is such a well realized character and a true example of how to write a racist with a believable redemption, plus a perfect scenario as to why that racism exists with tons of context of how it affects everyone, the writing in FFX is just too good

I bet a lot of people hate Wakka for this, but I have to commend the writters for actually having the balls of making one of the main characters racist. In every other fiction, racism is portrayed as a villain exclusive trait since "racism = evil"; the heroes are NEVER even a little bit discriminatory even when it WOULD make sense contextually (like when the rest of the society and even the family that raised them have such views) like it does here. Good guys always just happen to be the politically correct few due to the authors fear of being offensive. This is more realistic, showing that a good person at heart is not perfect and can still have some hurtful prejudices. Hell, even Wakka's hate is not even as simplified and cliched as hating Al Bhed just for being Al Bhed, but for the things they actually do.

It's really interesting that Rikku and Wakka are very similar people: playful, laidback, will give you the shirt off their back with no hesitation, honest to the point of fault. They're probably the most alike characters in the party. He's kinda like Rikku's cool uncle. But Rikku coming from a culture based on scientific progress and social liberty and Wakka comes from one based around faith and tradition really does show how much personal values inform a person. Wakka's wrong - about basically everything - and eventually he'll realize this. But once he goes through the healing process of realizing his moral core is flawed and based on lies they basically continue where they left off. Oppressive social structures treat real people as hypotheticals and oddly enough he was able to befriend an Al Bhed without knowing. His stereotypes and oppressive beliefs really do supersede his ability to think and act for himself. And he seems to know this. "I wish you told me she was from a race(?) I'm supposed to hate so I didn't use my intrinsic compassion and friendliness that makes me a good dude on her"

A lot of you are missing the bigger picture. Al bhed are living in a theocracy in which they are hated for being non-believers, but there is a deeper story than just that. Wakka has been shown throughout the story to be a kind person, but a strong devotion to a dogma (in this case religion) can make good people think and do bad things. Yevon uses this to discourage their followers from coexistence with those who could make them question their beliefs. This lack of coexistence, as well as Yevon’s teachings make the Al bhed very effective scapegoats. Yevon uses them as such very effectively, and this strengthens Yevon’s grip on power, which is their true motive. There are three important lessons to be learned here: Judge people as individuals and never as groups. Be suspicious of anyone who is trying to scapegoat groups of people. Never trust a theocracy.

The sad thing is, they were living in a theocracy long before this one. Back then they were pretty much low class workers who were under then thumb of a polytheistic theocracy that was run by mages, and anyone who couldn't use magic was considered a commoner. When they invented the first set of Machina, the authorities decided to exploit them and as their Machina became more and more evolved, the government became even more tyrannical, and had them make weapons or they'd be executed. The Al Bhed were often blamed for all the wars that were waged with the use of their Machina.

Shit I didn't realize how much this reflects real life back when I played this as a kid. hahaha.

As much as I dislike people who are religious like this, I can't bring myself to dislike Wakka. Al Bhed are known to use the machina forbidden by his religion's teachings, which he turned to when his brother was killed using one of the Al Bhed's machina. He's really my favorite character in this game.

I asked my mother if she believed in her god because she actually believed in him or because she was told by others to do so. She answered the latter, so like you said, they worship their individual religions without thinking. They just need to be given an opportunity to choose for themselves what they want to do.

That's not an excuse to act like an asshole and as anyone is capable of doing some pretty screwed up crap. This game showed that you should'nt blindly follow someone without thinking about their actions. Yevon's lies caused the death of so many people, Tidus and the others found a way to beat Sin presently if Yevon had'nt given up so easily they would've found out about Yu Yevon much earlier.

The best part of this scene is Auron though this whole thing is awesomely written too me. You just knew there'd be no other way Wakka would take this news than a verbal lashing out and showing just how strong Yevon's brainwashing is. But as he's ranting and raving Auron's just like "yeah whatever man I just want to get to the damn temple. Figure your crap out later." hehe.

I read somewhere that the Al Bhed are a genetically engineered race made to be exceptional at handling machina, because before Sin and the Machina War, the world was ran by mages, and anyone who wasn't a mage was treated like a second-class citizen.

The thing about Wakka is, he's a religious fanatic, not a racist (that word is overused). If the Al Bhed were Yevonites he wouldn't give a fuck. His religion is everything to him and it's the reason he completely melted down when he discovered that everything believed was a lie. That the summoner's pilgrimage is futile, that Sin is created from the "Final Summon", among other things.

Hmm....Rikku sure pegged Wakka with the "nothing will change that way". 1:32 Seems like Wakka is afraid. I never realized that when I played this game for the first time. He got over his fear though, which is good. He believed in Yevon, but he showed that he didn't want to kill for his beliefs when he saw what was happening at the Al-Bhed's Home. In the past, lots of people in America (though people all over the world act that way) didn't think that minorities were living beings, and they were really awful to them, sometimes even doctors and nurses, too, even though they had the Hippocratic Oath. Minnijean Brown, one of the Little Rock Nine students, would have died as a baby because a nurse didn't want to give her a treatment that would have saved her life. Her mother got it eventually though and she was fine. I read that in a book about that Minnijean and was pretty shocked. I never thought people would be like that, but some are. At least there are people out there who are kind to everyone, no matter what they're like (and even though he's a fictional character, at least Wakka eventually realized that Yevon wasn't all he was cracked up to be).

I'd also like to hear why you think the theory is pseudo science. It is real science. And even if Darwin were a racist, that doesn't discredit the theory. The evidence supporting it is substantial. Attacking Darwin's character instead of the merits of his theory is what we call ad hominem. And even if Darwin's theory of Evolution were refuted, which will probably never happen, the fact of evolution would still remain. The theory of evolution and the fact of it are two separate entities.

Ceri Handen that's not entirely wrong. 1000 years before the story Bevelle was at war with Zanarkand (reason?). Bevelle was the machina powerhouse while Zanarkand used summoners. Zanarkand was losing so their leader Yu Yevon turned the whole population into one big fayth in order to summon dream Zanarkand (Tidus and Jecht's home) and Sin to guard it and lay waste across Spira.

The Al Bhed, invented the Machina as a way to keep up with the upper class(as they were low class workers), and the upper class took advantage of them, and had them make weapons on the threat of execution. Bevelle waged war against Zanarkand because they thought they too had Machina weapons and didn't want them to use them(though they were dead wrong on that, as Zanarkand was a city of summoners). And after the whole SIn thingy, guess who got all the blame for all of this, the Al Bhed.

As if there's so many blond haired and green eyed Yevonites running around Spira. This scene always bothered me. It's like "Sean finds out Monica is black."

I wish more stories had a main character's flaw be their prejudice and blind trust in religion. It's very easy to make that the villain, but it makes a hero more interesting when they have these kind of traits that challenge our perception of them. You know Wakka is in the wrong, yet you also feel bad for him, knowing that everything he ever stood up for was a lie his entire life. Not to mention how pretty realistic it is in real life with how much our society is being run by cults and the followers they brainwash. You all would seriously be surprised with how many members in Congress are televangelists, prophets, or want to push the seven mountains mandate.

I’m not in a cult, in fact I rarely discuss atheism with anyone and I don’t meet with other atheists to discuss how much I don’t believe in God, I just found striking similarities to real life in this scene so I stated so. The fact that my comment bothers you so much shows that either you feel my comparison is unfair and widely believed, or deep down you are insecure in your beliefs. No, he was the leader of Zanarkand which was a city of Summoners. Zanarkand was at war with Bevelle due to the latter seeing Zanarkand as heretics. Yevon did not want to allow his city to be destroyed so he made the populace into a Fayth and use it to preserve Zanarkand in the form of a dream, while ensuring it was not discovered by becoming Sin and destroying all Machina cities and making sure no settlement that relied too much on Machina or having a large population would survive. The whole religion surrounding him came later and he had nothing to do with it, the temples made the whole "Yevon's Teachings" thing up.

Even though in the game it's a racial discrimination, I feel like it's a better representation of LGBTQ discrimination; the reason Spirans don't like the Al Bhed and even act violently towards them in some cases is because of religious reasons, similar to what goes on with the LGBTQ community.
