If you're wondering why Reno hasn't been around much, his Japanese voice actor died back in 2020 and they worked the game around that and I guess they sort of passed his role on to Elena.

Nomura said they didn't have enough time to recast Reno's voice because they had to do it for Barrett too (his voice actor went into retirement). But they said that for part 3 he will have a new voice actor.

I think it worked out pretty well. There's just a few Reno scenes we missed and it gave them an opportunity to let Elena shine, while also giving Rude some nice character beats like him missing Reno.

The side quests in this game are all connected to the main plot in some way. So you're right, that was the intent.

The Red quest in this video is so cute.

Im pretty sure barret's sidequest where we take pictures of Red for the children's story is the only side quests without any combat.

His long-time Japanese VA died very shortly after Remake came out. Hence Reno's on vacation most of this game. Rude gives a heartfelt "wish you were here, partner" earlier at some point, which was probably the most on-the-nose tribute to him.
