Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Boss Battle

Музыка

The boss battle theme. They're like regular fights but take longer. This game wasn't very hard but it sure had some good music.

    The problem isn't that it falsely advertised itself, the problem is that it's demeaning that Japan felt that the U.S. _needed_ an entry level RPG experience. Rather than a cultural barrier (the real reason FF games hadn't taken off in the states) they felt that the difficulty of JRPG's was the reason they weren't selling here so they decided to make a dumbed-down version for us dumb westerners. This would've be fine if FF had been something complicated like Europa Universalis, but it wasn't. FF games were never that hard to begin with.

  • @rsybing

    @rsybing

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Doc_Fun This unpacking of mindset is unnecessary. Occam's Razor: people hated it because it was less complex than the other FF titles. I can't think of anyone who stormed out of an Electronics Boutique angry that their intelligence was insulted with low cultural expectations.

  • @Doc_Fun

    @Doc_Fun

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@rsybing no, they didn't "storm out", because they didn't know until they _played it._ They were then retroactively insulted because the only people buying FFMQ were still the people who had bought the previous few FF titles released in the west, and they had expectations for what an FF game should be. No one wanted this game, it appeals to nobody since for brand new players the experience is unbelievably repetitive even by JRPG standards, and for seasoned players the game is even more of a chore. So _they_ hated it while the rest of the west went on oblivious, as the real reason FF wasn't doing well in the west was poor brand exposure, not the lack of an entry-level title for us dumb westerners. You seem to have confused "sold poorly" for "hated", which are often related but still different things. It did both, granted, but no one refused to purchase the game for "low cultural expectations", but they ended up hating the game for it regardless.

    I remember playing this game quite a lot on the SNES, but at the end of it all, it's the music I remember the most... It's hard to say if it's a bad game or not, it was fun, but it suffered from little replayability, since it was so linear, but back in the days, as young kid, I took what I had. And yes, the game is definitely meant for starters, that doesn't make it a bad game, it just means it's rather easy compared to other Final Fantasy games. Whether that's something that makes it more or less appealing is something everybody has to decide for him/herself.

    My mom claims that when I was a kid, like 9, she checked on me and found me sitting up. She asked what I was doing and I said I was "playing Mystic Quest." I was sleep talking. This music warped my goddamn mind. The whole soundtrack. It was so criminal in those days that I could only hear this in-game during a boss fight. I played the game just to get to the next boss and listen to this. Then I discovered MIDIs. Then I discovered SPCs. Now I can look for arrangements. It never gets old, this composition.
