Final Day and Tragedy Of Leslie Howard: Happiness to Heartbreak. Here's Why!
Leslie Howard is famous and best known for his role as Ashley Wilkes in the classic movie "Gone with the Wind" (1939). The film, which was directed by Victor Fleming and based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell, was a huge success and went on to become one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. In "Gone with the Wind," Howard starred alongside Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, playing the role of the reserved and honorable Ashley Wilkes, who is the object of Scarlett O'Hara's (played by Leigh) unrequited love. While Howard had a long and successful career as an actor both before and after "Gone with the Wind," it is this iconic role that is often most closely associated with him.

There are important details left out. He didn't want to play Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind. This is unsurprisingly as the part is dreadful and badly written. He was also distracted by the political situation in Europe. After Gone with the Wind, he could easily have stayed safely in America, but he was determined to go back to England and enter the war effort. He had shares in Gone with the Wind, but at that time, he couldn't return to England with shares in a foreign company. He therefore sacrificed millions and sold his shares to Selzneck for a mere $20,000. He threw himself into making propaganda films. He also travelled to give speeches (which he was very good at) in politically neutral countries to encourage them to enter the war effort. He also wanted America to join the Allies. He made the excellent film Pimpernel Smith. Many know it was signing his death warrant. He laughs at the Nazis and you know what they say, "The Devil hateth to be mocked." The Nazi head of propaganda said that Leslie Howard was the most effective master of propaganda the Allies had. Eighteen months after the film was out, Leslie Howard was dead. To kill him in a plane crash was vile, Nazi poetic "justice". Leslie Howard had played the designer of the spitfire. Some say Leslie Howard wasn't the target because his name wasn't on the list of British people the Nazis intended to execute when they took England. The reason was simple. Howard was down to be killed before any invasion date. Names on the Nazi hit list hadn't done anywhere near as much to oppose the Nazis as Leslie Howard had. To me, there is no doubt. Leslie Howard was a wonderful actor, but there is more to it. He was a hero who died in the service of his country, the Allies and freedom in the world. May God bless Leslie Howard.

He's a good actor, but I always thought someone else should have played in Gone with the Wind. I don't think he's attractive enough to represent Ashley, nor did his accent make sense to the story. I like his other roles, but that one always bothered me.
