FILTHY Sidewalk Deemed Too DANGEROUS & UNSAFE To Use

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My wife & I were driving down the street to get groceries when all of the sudden in a split second, I turned my head and noticed this filthy, damaged sidewalk. I knew I had to go back the next day to see if there was anything I could do to make it safer for people to walk on. I figured why not spend a couple hours and give the owner of the land a free makeover.
When I finished with the job, I still knew that if the city council came out and viewed this sidewalk, they would deem it too dangerous and unsafe to use. I am not sure what will happen to it proceeding forward. The sidewalk is connected to a open piece of land that might be used for a future building of some sort.
I started out by removing as much leaves as I could to make it easier to trim down all of the weeds that were growing in the cracks. I then proceeded to trim the weeds down, and the strip of grass received a temporary "soft edge". I then gave the sidewalk a real hard edge with a bladed edger and blew out all the dirt and debris to give it a nice, clean finished look.
If you ever see an opportunity to be a help to someone, whether you know it or not, do it.

Will you knotify the city of a broken sidewalk? Will you contact cement companies to work with you on the worst ones? I do understand what I am asking you to do, when it should be the city fathers job. Any bills sent to city hall may not be replied to. Which is not fair, as taxes are paid in to do the city maintenance. Good luck. Oh! Talk to the newspapers. This is an election year. We citizens forget that our state senator can receive mail sent to a local address for any business. 40 years ago, when recycling was just starting, I got the Nebraska senator to step up and work for our area. Just an idea for safety on sidewalks. PS your work on this project is went quickly. Thanks.

I may not ever walk down this exact sidewalk or even any of those you've cleaned up but I have had to use sidewalks like this one-- pushing my walker, groceries piled up, on my way to a bus stop-- and I have to say thank you so much. You make a difference for good. Your hard work is appreciated.

Would love to see actual crews do this for fun. And would love to be one if I had the money for the tools and the livelihood to sustain free work like this. Love your videos. Great job on a difficult sidewalk. N 4th and E Birch. The listing broker is likely surprised and pleased the curb appeal is hugely improved. On the adjacent lot there used to be an older house with Way Back Vintage and Antiques. Another old house on the opposite corner of Birch is also gone. Sidewalk over there has nobody keeping it up. it's not as ripped up by tree roots. Both lots look like good prospects for a rescue.

I am one former council member who DID care. But if you don’t have the support of the others, your hands are tied. Trust me, I tried! And I was the only one that got my hands dirty. Picking up trash on a street all by myself. Almost a whole mile, in August. I also helped paint playground equipment in 2 city parks. I also spent many hours pulling up illegally placed signs in the right of ways and from utility poles. We only received $50 a month as a stipend for our service to the city. That barely covered the cost of gas I used. I cringe at the sight of our curbs and gutters. I live on a corner of a highway that runs through the city. I power washed my curb, and even painted the manhole cover to the storm drain that is on the corner. As I said, I tried to get the city to do clean ups. The city manager always had excuses for the employees, but wouldn’t do anything about this workers sleeping in the parks for 4 hours on a Friday. They only worked a half a day. That’s a waste of taxpayers money. I was glad when I was defeated in my last election. I was just too frustrated and tired of trying to fight city hall!

Great job and this may sound silly but love where you jump on the shovel with both feet to break up the clumps of dirt. Reminds me of when I was a kid helping dig up the garden for planting! Thanks for reminding me of a great memory.

Sidewalks are usually on city right of ways. It is usually the homeowners responsibility to keep them clear of snow and debris. The city or town should maintain the sidewalks integrity.

Awesome transformation man, I wonder how Stihl will ever make a battery that can run an edger on a job like this. Still think us lawn care people are far away from switching over totally to 🔋 equipment.

Amazing change! BTW, apparently in a lot of areas, the city doesn't do upkeep on sidewalks. It is often up to the property owner to repair and maintain the sidewalks.

You did a nice job on clearing off this sidewalk, but it sure is dangerous. In the cities around me, the cost of replacing a sidewalk is the City responsibility. (Initial sidewalk cost where one doesn’t exist is split between landowner and city). Every year the public works departments inspect and mark sections to be replaced.

I am surprised that the owner of the property hasn't been required to replace the sidewalk to make it more accessible for everyone. You did a FANTASTIC JOB. WOW!!! What a HUGE difference. I can't believe all you removed and bagged. 👍👍👍 I would think the township would require the owner replace the sidewalk. Keeps many from using it andddddd -- anyone could FALL AND SUE THEM FOR INJUIRES. A lot cheaper to replace than possibly getting sued. 🥴

Trees are almost 70 I'd guess, but sidewalks like these were sought after when I was a kid on my BMX (free ramps). With a sidewalk like this, clean means you can see what is doing while you use it so it is safer to an extent.

The only way to fix it is totally dig it all up and re-grade the ground and re-lay it. The tree roots are rotting and composting and with the weight of the pavement after nearly a half century or more, its collapsing in random places. For now, a clean-up as was done and then put neon orange spraypaint around the tripping hazards is the only temporary fix.

Pretty sure those are Modesto Ash. We had them tearing up our sidewalks as a kid. I feel like the ones we had on our street were slightly bigger and were like 60 or 70 years old. So I'm going 50 to 60 years old.
