The Blood Elves have gotten a pretty rough deal since the Third War. Canonically 90% of their population was wiped out by Arthas, the Alliance turned their backs on the remaining survivors, and the last scion of the royal family went insane, they've fraught with civil war over the years, but still... they carry on and move forward.

Sylvanas, simply because of what that former lead writer did purely out of spite and hatred for the character and her fans. Blizzard will be trying to recover from the mistake of his writing for years. Took three expansions (6yrs) just to fix the burning of the tree, which was step 1 on the descent into nonsense.

It may look like a downplaying pose when Saurfang walks towards the alliance army but he wanted a warrior's death so he would have fought to get one not just lay down and die. The alliance would have taken gigantic losses just trying to take him down, the "Cleaving 10 enemies with a single blow" wasn't an exagiration, that was a callback to how he used to be a faction boss for the horde and he was so strong he could cleave kill 10 players lol.

"Not after what I've seen, what I've done." You hear Saurfang's voice in Anduin's in the World Within cinematic. Also, Zek'han (Zappyboi) brings back his son, Dranosh. Handing the necklace, lovingly handmade (probably by the son). After he follows Saurfang, and he hands the necklace back, the big orc puts a fist on the chest, then turns it, holding it in a gesture of "love" (sign language). Very powerful symbolism all the way around. You go back to the ending cinematic, Thrall stops Zek'han and hold a protective hand on his shoulders. I can only hope that Thrall takes up the father role from Saurfang where Zappy's concerned. There's so much in this whole story, so much to unpack and it keeps going.

Saurfang was consistently one of the Horde Orc characters Alliance players had positive interactions with over the years. It started with city raid on Orgrimmar, Saurfang became a legend by being notoriously difficult to fight if Alliance ran close to him on their way to kill Thrall. Then he became the head of the combined Might of Kalimdor forces during the Qiraji war effort, Alliance got to hear him speak. He was this veteran warrior with a heart of honor, brother of Broxigar, another legendary Orc who died charging Sargeras. Then in Wrath we meet him in the final raid where we have to fight his son, who died earlier in the expac then was raised as a Death Knight (he's the dead Orc in snow in this cinematic). In the Alliance version of the raid he is pretty respectful and Saurfang takes his son without incident. For Alliance players he was one of the most liked and most respected Orcs.

Varok has always been a sympathetic character, a hero with honor. Even the Alliance had a hint of it when we granted him the space to care for his son's corpse-again-after we defeated his son as raised by Arthas to be one of our raid bosses in the Icecrown Citadel. This particular cinematic establishes his role as core NPC to the franchise for Horde and Alliance alike, with flashbacks to put everybody on the same page (as much of half of the player base really only plays one faction or the other). This cinematic provides a prologue, albeit in medias res, for the xpac's storytelling series. Amazing as it is alone, this cinematic installment belongs in sequence with the others; for his story proves one of the most compelling arcs in the franchise, absolutely critical as foil to both Anduiin's and Sylvanas' stories, as well. Varok Saurfang mirrors the honor and conscience that Sylvanas as lacks, which in the following xpac proves all too literal (poorly told, no shortage of bitterness among the players for it). Varok bridged the chasm between Alliance and Horde. He eventually gets the reward he has desired for so long, in one of the most emotional and pivotal scenes in WoW history. Mind you the storytelling in BfA, for the most part, was a tour de force; but it was scattered to different spaces: several high-quality cinematics, several exclusively in-game cinematics and cutscenes, a lot of game play that varied dramatically between Horde and Alliance experiences, and even a book and additional free publications. So following the whole arc without playing means finding a collection assembled by a player KZread channel like, say, Nobbel, for running commentary and conciseness, or any number of others that can run upwards of nearly two hours. Have fun with that. As a moviemaker, it would be an interesting, if time-consuming, journey, as well as an opportunity to express your critiques on decisions Blizz made where to place each storytelling element.

Since Sylvanas for obvious reasons never shared what this all was for, it was just more or less pointless slaughter and escalation Of course that ws the point Sylvanas had from the start, since they needed more souls in the Shadowlands to bring down the system. It's nothing she could share with him, since one of the main points of the plan was to no one learned about it too soon and of course the chance that anyone would go along with it anyway was more than slim. In the end, Saurfang is still weak to follow her without this knowledge, since without it she's just insane. But it's likely the whole horde thing and following the war chief no matter what.

In that regard i´m kind of on the edge about Anduin repeating Saurfang´s line in the "War within" trailer. If the writers at Blizzard still have it in them, it can mean that´s a important callback and the stories are intertwined. On the other hand it could be a cheap member berry in hopes to bring back players who checked out with "Shadowlands" or "Dragon Flight", which would be a red flag for the coming expansion. ... Of cause i could be reading too much into it, but the recent years of main stream media disappointments have left me utterly skeptical.

  • @lordmortarius538

This cinematic starts off in Lordaeron, on the walls of Capital City (the ruins of which the Forsaken capitol of the Undercity sits beneath). The Alliance has moved to remove the Horde presence from the Eastern Kingdoms and retake Lordaeron for the Alliance after the atrocity Sylvanas unleashed upon the Night Elves in Kalimdor. The titular Old Soldier is Varok Saurfang, who was a part of the old Horde that invaded Azeroth waaaay back when it was commanded by Blackhand the Destroyer and then Orgrim Doomhammer. He was party to the genocide of the Draenei, to the burning of Stormwind, and the slaughtering of Elves in Quel'thalas. After Grom killed Mannoroth and freed his people from the demonic blood curse, Saurfang led the Kor'kron elite to Northrend and was stationed at Warsong Hold there, where Garrosh Hellscream's brutal yet successful tactics disturbed him, fearing his people's bloodlust returning. He couldn't even eat pork anymore, as the swine's screams as they were slaughtered brought back the memories of the Draenei he had helped wipe out. Dranosh Saurfang, his son, joined him in Northrend and was killed at the Wrathgate by Arthas, who raised him into a Death Knight, granting him the title of Deathbringer. We had to battle him in our raid on Icecrown Citadel and ultimately defeat him (one of the harder boss fights in the raid), and later, Varok is allowed by Varian to reclaim the body of his son. Varok has sworn ever since that he would not start a war, nor would he allow a warmongerer to rise to power, which is why he is GREATLY disturbed by Sylvanas' actions in the War of Thorns where she sets Teldrassil alight with thousands of innocents inside. His loyalty to the Horde and his morality are at war in this cinematic, and he ultimately must choose which path he will follow. He sees the future of the Horde in youthful Zekhan, a shaman of the Darkspear troll tribe, who reminds him of his son with his hopeful eagerness, and despite losing faith in Sylvanas' leadership, he chooses to stand with the Horde in order to protect those like Zekhan and make things better. I highly, HIGHLY recommend that you watch all the in-game cutscenes for this too, and the patch cinematics (Terror of Darkshore is just fucking magnificent). This expansion really had a film-like narrative throughout, and it's so good that you don't want to miss any of it.

Saurfang in lore was a beast, "kill ten enemies with a single blow", totally true. Funny thing is that way back in OG Vanilla, an Alliance raid came to kill Thrall in Orgrimmar. They came in the front gate and the Saurfang NPC took them all out. A raid of 40 toons was annihilated by one NPC. Us in Org just stood by and watched the carnage when usually it was a call to arm to defend Thrall in the throne room. I remember the Saurfang NPC charging and cleaving and like 4 toons die, rinse and repeat LOL, one of my favorite memories from the game.

Varok Saurfang, younger brother of Broxigar and elder of an as-yet-unnamed third brother, is one of the Orcs' oldest remaining leaders and easily one of the most powerful Warriors their race has ever produced, eclipsed only by Broxigar as the only mortal being to ever cause an injury to a Titan. On their homeworld of Draenor, he was neck-deep in the war with the Draenei after Gul'dan framed them as the cause for Draeno'r's sudden and accelerating climate change, for the silence of their ancestors' spirits that had once guided them but had now seemingly abandoned them, and for the recent bout of Red Pox plague that was sweeping through their people like a scythe through wheat, forcing what few survivors there were to be isolated in a leper camp in Nagrand, Varok's son Dranosh among them. By the time the Orcs sealed the Blood Pact with Mannoroth and the Burning Legion, Varok no longer had care for whether or not he was doing the right or honorable thing anymore, he only cared about revenge. When the Dark Portal was opened and the invasion of Azeroth began, he didn't even care about that either, only that whatever enemy he was pointed at fell to his axe because it was all he knew how to do anymore, no matter the depravity, destruction or desecration that meant committing. When the Orcs lost that war and most of the invaders were captured, they spent the next decade undergoing what Dalaran called The Lethargy, where the Orcs seemed to undergo withdrawal-like symptoms along with signs of severe depression and PTSD, this being a consequence of their sudden loss of access to the Fel magic that had been driving many of their actions and clouding their thoughts for the previous decade. Saurfang himself was one of the most heavily affected, and when he was freed by Doomhammer, Thrall and Grom Hellscream he made it his mission to ensure the Orcs never fell to such depravity and dishonor again. When he discovered that not only was a fragment of Draenor still alive after Ner'zhul seemingly destroyed it to power a ritual to send himself and his closest followers to a new world to escape the Alliance, but that his son Dranosh still lived, his heart swelled with hope for the first time in almost 30 years...and then Dranosh was killed and Raised by the Lich King almost as soon as his service to the Horde had begun. This act *crushed* Saurfang. He retreated to Outland in his grief as Garrosh Hellscream began his campaign of conquest and extermination despite Saurfang's own oath that he would kill Garrosh if Garrosh forsook the honor that he and warriors like Garrosh's father had fought so hard to regain, only returning during the final Siege at Orgrimmar where he was easily beaten and badly injured by the Mantid, a race of insectoid beings that worship the dead Old God, Y'shaarj, whom Garrosh had unearthed the heart of to empower himself and his armies. Saurfang is at the lowest of lows now, and just wants to die for his sins and his failures. But as a proud warrior, he refused to lay down and let a lesser take him or to take his life himself, he feels that he must earn his death as a warrior and a servitor to the people he thinks he has failed and disgraced. Thus, this lead-in to the Battle for Undercity, where to his old eyes the sins of his people's past seem doomed to be repeated, and he loses all hope... Enter Stage-Left: Zekhan the Zappy Boi!

The atrocities they committed against the Draenei before the invasion of Azeroth... pretty unspeakable. They had first drank the demon fel blood and were blood thirsty. Did bad deeds for wrong reasons under bad influences. Thrall (and to some extent the sacrifice of Warcraft 3 Grommash Hellscream) helped lead the Horde down a new path. The killing of all the innocents by Sylvanas certainly reminds Saurfang of the horrendous acts he and fellow orc brethren have committed in their own past - no doubt giving them a unique insight on it.

How exactly is locking a defeated army of demon-possessed genocidal maniacs in internment camps an "horrific crime", especially when the only realistic alternative would have been to exterminate them on the spot? To even compare the real atrocities of some rogue Alliance secondary leaders like Daelin or Garithos (don't even bring Arthas into this) to the various genocides actually commited or attempted by the Horde as a faction (Draenei genocide, First and Second Wars, Garrosh, Sylvanas' use of bioweapons against civilians from the start of Vanilla WoW, War of the Thorns and Burning of Teldrassil), and more specifically by the orcs, fel corruption or not, is absolutely laughable.

I believe the choice of orange and blue is also tied to the story of the game at this point in time. The soul of the world was just wounded by a gigantic sword, and the blood leaking from this worldsoul became a resource the two factions fought over. This ressource is called azerite and is orange and blue. Azerite held the potential for both destruction and creation.

Small piece of lore before diving into my own comment. Saurfang's dead son, was in the possession of the Alliance at the time during the Lich King/Gate. Out of honor, Varian (Anduin's father) let Saurfang come to their city & collect his son's corpse. An act to allow a father to bury his child(ren). In response Saurfang tells Varian (king of stormwind/Alliance faction), he would not forget such an act. *He never did.* I still remember when this along with the in-game cutscenes came out. Everybody (myself too) mostly felt it was an unfair battle, but for obvious reasons it was cool to see a bad ass character with principles he'd come to "foster" for Zakar/Zappy-boy by talking to him like a son about the realities of war. But it was interesting to see a character in the middle of conflict & go against orders because he isn't a puppet/yes-man. Which is what makes the battle scene even more like a, "it has to be this way, no excuses.". Equal to note is how well composed Saurfang is when Anduin confronts him in what can only be described as a cage built for 'human prisoners'.. But that during the scene you can see how almost irrelevant the place is lol. But, he views Anduin as his equal.

This is how you do heartfelt, strong emotional storytelling. I won't rant about the state of the way they do narrate feelings after that, it's not the place for it. But I'll say in terms of both production and writing, this is one of my favorites to date, even if the expansion itself, BFA, was a really mixed bag, to put it positively.

I love Varok... When Zappy asks him "How many do you think?" and we get the flashback to Teldrassil the "Too many" from Varok to me has a double meaning. Not only are there too many for him to take on alone to make sure he get's his warrior's death... But too many innocents have died by Sylvannas as well. Also the hand gesture he makes on Dranosh chest. The fist, then laying the fist on the chest, knuckles up, he later does to Zappy. Also... People keep bringing up 'honor' to Varok and he seems to be getting tired of it and annoyed. Also... when the Horde banner rises you can see what even the symbol alone means to him. The idea... Almost to what Rome meant to many Roman soldiers even if they have never been there. Varok understand the idea of what the Horde should be and how it has been corrupted for years.

This is like the pre cinematic before the battle for Azeroth one when silvanas is defending Lordaeron from the alliance after the burned Teldrassil for no reason. What sword? Lol I agree that it is good to see them take their time with many of their good stories. But completely ignoring that sword for this long… I really do not think most of bfa, shadowlands, and dragonflight was so critical to do before even acknowledging that loose end.

@@glyakk They didn't ignore the sword. Literally fixing the threat it posed was a major plot of BfA. Azeroth isn't in danger because of the sword in TWW. It's in danger because of Xal'atath. They came to the sword in the trailer because the voice was calling out "from the heart of the world" & the sword is the evidence of Sargeras trying to kill the same thing: lending importance. We are not "addressing the sword" in TWW. We did that in BfA.

@@dr.zoidberg8666 my critique is less about the actual story line and more about how the writing was done. If you stick a massive sword into a planet you would think that would be something that gets noticed more then it did in bfa. They could have used a number of other story telling devices to for sargeras to wound Azeroth to spill Azerite and require our OP weapons at the time to heal the corruption in order to initiate the story of bfa without resulting to having a massive sword sticking out of the crust. It is my belief that the story was changed behind the scenes due to the reception of the game at the time and they changed directions, but had nothing concrete to say about it until now.

@@glyakk Nah, I disagree. The way we dealt with the sword was exactly whet made sense -- I think a group of the playerbase got in their heads that we'd pull the sword out or something, which is just crazy. I expected it to be a permanent feature of the world & I'm glad it is -- like the chicxulub crater from the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. More than that, it's a permanent monument to our victory over Sargeras -- to his ultimate failure to destroy Azeroth so the void couldn't turn it to their cause. Imho the sword of sargeras succeeds where the cataclysm failed: It changed the world in an epic, meaningful, & permanent way.

@@dr.zoidberg8666 I get that and that’s a valid opinion, however the fact that blizzard stayed quiet about it this whole time makes it seem like it’s was accident to me. Maybe a happy accident in the end, but I feel like if you are going to permanently change such a drastic feature of the planet, have a rock solid story in place so you can say something like it’s now a monument to your victory over (fill in the blank) or hint what’s next, anything but crickets would have shown they were committed to a story and not scrambling to find a story.

He didn't come to an agreement with Sylvanas. She's the appointed leader of the Horde. Saurfang is all about honor, there's only one way to go against the Warchief and that's to challenge them to Mak'gora, a dual of/for honor. And that's what he does in a later cinematic.

Oh, the troll noob, here, shows up here and there later. He's exactly the character role vis-à-vis Saurfang you describe; and serves to connect Varok's son by surrogate. I haven't played my Horde toons much the last few years (not for any particular reason), so I keep forgetting his name; but the player base turned him into a meme as Zappy Boy. :) Incidentally, Sylvanas KNEW elves she burned in that tree, including the woman who tells her she can't kill hope, whose head Sylvanas turns to watch it and responds, "Can't I?" None of this is pleasure for Sylvanas. She has a plan that nobody can fathom and extremely few agree with as they learn about it. As I said, Varok is her conscience, her honor; and what she does to him henceforth symbolizes her own dispossession of those facets of herself. And the hope she kills… is her own. Immediately after the Sylvanas scene insert, by the way, that is, right after the actual burning of Teldrassil, Horde players make one of those rare decisions offered in games, a taking of sides, that determines a bit of the character's experience in this element of the story arc. It's pretty cool, because it's so hard to program that variability into such a game.
