All I know is, in the music circles (especially for anyone playing drums), this movie was literally the second coming. All they talked about in 2014, was Whiplash. A lot of discussion was had on if the approaches were right or wrong, what does it take to become the best in a highly saturated and competitive profession, and if the ending was a positive one, a sad one, a dying dream of a man who got hit by a car, or something else entirely.

Not me but someone else described this film as “Full Metal Jacket for band geeks” lmfao 😂 it’s so true! JK deserved that Oscar! 🙌🏻

The fact that this was done in 19 days. Huge props to the team.

Love the details when Fletcher asked Nieman about his parent’s history. Fletcher making sure Nieman’s family was not involved in music allows him to take that “fatherly” role over Nieman. That allows him to use extra manipulation and hurtful tactics while somewhat seeming justifiable in the eyes of Nieman, considering he has no external musical sources to learn from, outside of Fletcher.

This movie was every bit as intense as any horror or action movie I’ve ever seen. JK Simmons is a force of nature.

I'm in the camp that the end of this movie is depressing but for a different reason than you mentioned. Andrew finally got validation but he's back in now. The very next time Fletcher doesn't think he's living up to his potential he'll be right back to the abusive tactics.

Right on James. I love this 'sleeper' hit movie. To me, it's a fantastic character study. J.K. Simmons is unreal in his intensity. One of my closest friends since high school is a classically trained drummer and he told me there are indeed teachers in the industry like this. I suppose there are people like this in most domains. But damn, the whole movie just oozes stress. Magic.

Saw this in theaters and had zero idea what I was walking into. One of the best movies I’ve seen.

I'm used to watching movie reactions for the most part (as in first-timers), but I'm digging this movie

I don't personally think it was a look of awe, I think he realises the kind of person his son's become and is incredibly concerned. His family say at the dinner table that Charlie Parker was an alcoholic and a heroin addict (which came about after getting addicted to meds in recovery from a car wreck...), he also attempted suicide twice, was put in a mental hospital, and died penniless at age 34, and people are still saying "I hope he becomes the next Charlie Parker" while watching. I respect everyone's point of view, but I personally really struggle to understand how people watch it and think "hell yeah" or think his dad's look is a proud look. And obviously there's also the other similar student who killed himself. The film shows him throw away personal relationships, drag himself from a car wreck, destroy his body, mind and everything else about his life in order to be good enough to impress his abuser. To me it's very clearly a tragedy, his life is headed for ruin because of his obsession and the final scene shows him embracing it. And his dad knows it and is horrified.

I'm so glad you mentioned my comment from patreon about nobody knowing the chair was going to be thrown except for Miles and JK. You can even see the one dude behind Miles start to duck when he notices because he thinks it might be going towards him. I love how genuine that reaction is. GREAT commentary on this film. One of my favorites of all time with my favorite actor ever (Miles Teller). Thank you for this video. :)
