Basically I liked everything which expanded/introduced Predator culture. I didn't read the comics or anything else; if it wasn't in Arnold's Predator, I didn't know it. So that's what I loved--sparing the pregnant woman, sparing Glover, giving the flintlock.

I love this movie almost as much as the original. It’s a great sequel that expands on the lore without feeling like a carbon copy of the first. I especially love that it continues to show how the Predator determines what is a trophy worth taking. A majority of it’s kills involves people who merely just shoot at it, thus they get hanged and skinned. However, if you go hand to hand in some way, you’ve earned the right to be a proper trophy with your gleaming skull hanging on the wall. It’s a great bit of lore building that isn’t overt, shown not told. A little trivia for you. The movie is based on the Predator comic sequel from Dark Horse in the late 80’s early 90’s. It’s set in New York and features Dutch’s brother who is an NYPD detective investigating a series of brutal murders. Apart from the character and location change, it deviates very little from the comic, including the subway scene. Also, because they were both Twentieth Century Fox properties, the director thought it would be a cute visual gag to put the alien skull on the trophy wall. Before this, nobody gave such a crossover any thought. That’s how we got the AvP comics and movies.

@@JamesVSCinema Fun bit of worldbuilding one could read into the first 2 predator films. Based on it's more aggressive, reckless demeanor and seeming over preparedness compared to the Predator from the 1st film, I have had conversations where it is speculated that the main predator in this film is a young one, possible on it's first "solo" hunt, with it's elders watching from a distance in case they need to clean up a mess. In comparison, the Predator from the first film went into a hostile area, solo, far from backup, and with much less armor and weaponry. It was very patient and methodical, picking the exact time and place to strike. When it grabbed the body in the middle of the night, it used an animal as a distraction, grabbed it's prize, and got out fast. This younger predator likely would have tried to snag another trophy while it was there IMO. The 1st predator was also quicker to retreat when the prey got spooked, and would come back later, where as this predator would jump right into groups of humans. just some musings/ramblings from my friends and I.

I think the AvP series is entertaining, there is even one from DC comics I think in which Batman fights the xenomorphs, I think all those versions give fans from both sides a chance to see them in action. But that is as far as it goes when immersing yourself in that universe. Are you watching Predator, Predator 2, etc.? Then it is only predator, are you watching AvP? then both exist. I think Predator is still the best in the series. Predator is just such a tightly paced and well performed movie. The biggest beef I have with Predator 2 is that it feels... Messier. It doesn't feel as cohesive. I don't think the human characters are given quite enough depth, and I think a few of the ideas with Harrigan are not fleshed out as well as they could have been. That being said, it is still a very entertaining, high octane, fast paced action film.... and City Hunter/Pussy Face just has so many great gadgets. On the Predator side, one thing I really love is that the one from the first and this guy are two very distinct individuals if you stop and think about how they act. The first Predator was much more about sneaking and stealth. City Hunter doesn't give a crap. He rolls in there and starts taking on gangs, cops, government agents... In GROUPS. In fact that's his character flaw. his recklessness is what allows Harrigan to get the upper hand over him.

  • @gachalordnoobie4911
    @gachalordnoobie4911 Жыл бұрын

Fun fact - The bio-mask of the predator in the first movie (designated as: Jungle Hunter) was recording everything he saw and did. All predator masks do that, and when he died - it automatically got uploaded to the predator network - and later viewed by other predators who saw Dutch and saw him as a worthy opponent. City Hunter (predator in this movie) saw the recording too and he wanted to find a warrior as strong and clever as Dutch fight - and he did, in the form of Mike Harrigan (main character of the second movie). The thing is - when he watched the recording of Jungle Hunter fighting Dutch, he also heard the phrase "You are one ugly motherfucker" and he remembered it. So when he heard Mike saying "You are one ugly--" he knew what he was going to say and finished the sentence, recognizing the words from Jungle Hunter's fight with Dutch. The predator mask has many functions beyond just covering their face. It can change vision modes, do a large area-wide scan (around 2-3 kilometers) for anything living, has a build-in targetting system, records the predator's hunts and-- it also records voices and phrases of other life forms which it then uses to lure in others. Some predators however go even further and mimic the voice of humans - some doing it better than most, City Hunter was particulary skilled in this ability as he could mimic human words almost perfectly. The predator who was most skilled in this ability and could not only say the words, but even understand them - was the Fugitive Predator. He could not only repeat and understand, but he could even perfectly replicate the person's tone of voice, even a woman's voice was no problem. This is most likely because of his spliced DNA, as his DNA was modified with some human DNA. The City Hunter was a member of the LAHG clan (L.A. Hunting Group) who stopped in L.A. to test their youngest member's - City Hunter's - skill and prove himself worthy of being in the clan. over the course of the movie, we see City Hunter becoming more and more bloodthirsty. It got to the point that Greyback himself (leader of the entire clan and the one who gave Mike the flintlock pistol) was about to go for City Hunter himself and bring him back to the ship. But City Hunter was injured and killed by Mike before he could - when they were battling - Greyback and the others watched the honorable battle between City Hunter and Mike. When mike killed the City Hunter he proved himself worthy and was rewarded by Greyback the flintlock pistol as a sign of respect and considering him an equal. Sometimes when a human defeats a predator (or a xenomorph) they are even offered a place in the clan, this however rarely happens as the predators don't really like humans (or any other species for that matter), we actually know only about one human who was trained by the predators and became a full fledged member of a clan (but even then the other predators didn't like her and often challenged her to a duel).

'You can't see the eyes of the demon - until him come calling.' The outstanding part for me of Predator 2 was the phycological element and how that colours the atmosphere and build up to the finale. The Predator was toying with Harrigan in a tactically calculated manner by going after the things he cared about the most (within the code) to insure an emotional connection come the time of the final encounter. The most notable example to me was simply leaving his butchered friend Danny's bloodstained necklace for the detective to find near the grave was some powerful scare tactics that built on the horror aspect. It's these elements that keep Predator 2 in second place and above the sequels in my eyes. Also, for the hardcore fans find the graphic novel ' Predator: Concrete Jungle', it heavily inspired this movie and is a pretty cool read. Cheers mates, cheers James!

The whole Pistol 1715 originally had it's lore based in the Dark Horse Comic book where the pistol belonged to a Pirate captain whose crew mutinied against him. The Predator who was originally hunting him, teamed up with him against his crew and before they could face off, a surviving crew mate shot the captain in the back. He gave his pistol to the Predator, telling him to 'take it.' The new movie Prey, retcons this and puts the pistol in the established film universe.

Oh wow James, I'm so glad I finally watched this reaction video! 22 year old "me" back in 1990 only ever saw this movie one single time. 22 year old me was so mesmerized with Arnold Schwarzenegger movies back in that era he dismissed this movie and never gave it a second watch. As a now 54 year old adult, I will definitely check out this movie with adult eyes. I now know where they got all the lore for the Alien vs Predator PC games. Thanks for watching and reacting to this movie. :)

People keep saying that Bill Paxton was the only (or one of two) actor to be killed by an Alien, Predator and Terminator but I'm not convinced about the last on. I've seen that scene probably more than a dozen times and it was never confirmed that his character died from being thrown. If there is official confirmation then I'll accept it. Anyway, onto the facts about this film. 1. Arnie said he reprise his role only if the story remained in the Jungle and money. 2. I can't recall her name right now but the other survivor from the first encounter (you know, the Latina chick) was supposed to make a cameo in this one! I think she's supposed to be in the surveillance van with the FEDS. 3. Several of the hunting party members were played by players from the Los Angeles Lakers; Danny Glover was a big fan, and when the production needed several very tall people to play the background Predators, he asked them to help out. 4. King Willie is a Rastafarian practicing Voodoo which are two distinct religions. Voodoo is more practiced in Haiti and Rastas originated in Jamaica. 5. This was, unfortunately, Kevin Peter Hall's last performance. He died at the age of thirty-five.

Super happy you caught the aliens Aliens reference! This is actually the first on-screen drop of them being in the same universe. In comics and books there had been crossovers for a while (great little classics, the first ones!), but this is the first time on film :) While the AvP movies disappointed a little, they're still good fun. This movie is also inspired by the Predator comics, I believe, titled "Concrete Jungle". I hope you stick with this franchise! Would love to see you watch more :) Predators, AvP2, and Prey are all pretty solid. AvP1 isn't half bad either, it just gets unintentionally corny a few too many times.

I was a child (around 4/5) when I saw both Predator and Predator 2 and loved them both equally. As I got older, I never understood the dislike for Predator 2. It was a solid sequel, written by the same team from the first, and took the Yautja from the jungle, into a concrete jungle, and gave an different vibe that mirrored the original, and built upon it. Instead of doing a retread of the original with a few new elements... like Predators (which I enjoyed, but it never sat right with me).

After the first, the Predator movies became more and more popcorn fare instead of fully realized movies. While fun to watch, they just didn't capture the full experience of the first one. The exception is the new one, Prey. It is a great movie and gives a lot of homage to the first.

Predator 2 is my favorite of the series, easily has the most rewatch value and really captures the tone that was popular in a lot of action films I'm the late 80s early 90s where NY, Detroit, LA all had this almost apocalyptic feel to them.

  • @seraphinaaizen6278

The invisible predator did look different in the first movie, because they used a different creature for most of the movie. The predator was originally played by Jean Claud Van Damme, which is why for most of the movie the predator looks pretty sleek and the size of a normal human.A lot of the shots of the cammo predator still use the footage of JCVD in the red stand-in suit he was wearing. But late in the shooting they finally got the proper creature suit and it looked like garbage. They realized they had to change course to rescue the film. As Arnold himself described it: "It looked like a guy in a lizard suit with the head of a duck". And that same shape is still evidence in a lot of the cammo scenes with the invisible predator. So they did a hasty redesign of the creature and got Kevin Peter Hall in to play the creature with his enormous height, and created the now iconic creature design that we saw in the final film. In Predator 2, all of the invisible predator shots are based around the final product, so it looks different from the invisible creature in the first movie.

Gotta love the little touches in a lot of the scenes. The guy just taking a fistful of Colombian battle powder, the fact that the predator is pretty selective with its kills, that trophy cabinet. Gary Buseys upper half disappearing; only his legs fall. I’ve watched this film too many times.

Harrigan’s Desert Eagle with the giant 80’s laser sight is pretty awesome. I love all the over-the-top handcannons in classic action movies. Nearly every weapon in this movie is kitted out with custom furniture or laser sights. The tech was new at the time, and they thought it made the weapons look futuristic, they really wanted the near-future setting to pop. James is spot on about the “videogame-feeling” though, especially considering they made a game called Predator: Concrete Jungle which remixes a lot of the set pieces and uses a lot of the gadgets shown here.

I'm so glad you liked this movie. It gets a lot of hate for some reason, and I don't understand why. I might be a little biased, though, because I love Danny Glover, so watching him win a head-to-head battle with a Predator while doing his grumpy old man grumbling the whole time was a real treat for me. And yes, hands down the most horrifying part of this movie is the fact that the Predator latches onto that kid's words "want some candy" and says it during one of the kill sequences. Holy crap, that's unnerving, lmao.

While filled with a lot of campiness, Predator 2 is a lot of fun and does great exosnsion on lore. At most I'd say watch "Predators" before watching "Prey". You don't have to watch any of the AvP, but if you do, avoid "Requiem" like the fucking plague. Also, there was no Predator movie from 2018. For some reason theaters played 2 hours of static for a period of time in 2018 and that's it. Can't wait for you to react to "Prey". Gorgeous cinematography, and a solid addition to the franchise. Damn shame it wasn't given a theatrical release.

I told him how much the movie "Be Kind Rewind" is a love letter to movies and it was awesome that he was in it. He shook my hand and thanked me. I don't know if he cared, but it seemed too. I always liked Predator 2 and i don't know why people hated on it so much. I even bought the Predator 2 game on Sega Genesis when i was i a kid. I still have it by the way. Yeah sure Predator 1 is better, but it doesn't mean Predator 2 suck. Still love it and my Predator list right now is: 1. Predator 1 2. Predator 2 3. Predators 4. Prey 5. The Predator

Not seen this film in decades but I genuinely enjoyed the film and watching this reminded me it was a quality 90's film. Stereotypically 90's with a mash of genres, with that synth score, cheesy lines and genuinely corny action and all-round entertaining. Film doesn't get any recognition or mentioned as much when we talk about classic 90's action films.
