The Act of Compassion is a literal translation, the title of the movie in USA is "A Dog's Will" I would add Bacurau (2019) to that list, even tough I think it would be hard for a gringo understand the narrative, would be fun to watch the reaction about the cinematography.

They werent really actors at the time and most never acted again. They were kids and teens from the favelas that they hired for the movie. The only one that was a professional actor at the time was Carrot.

The only movies to rival it IMO are The Florida Project and Beasts of No Nation. Beasts of No Nation has the best child performance in a film by a pretty fat margin even compared to this. Moonlight has a great child performance as well.

Some cool facts about this movie: The majority of the actors were actual people from favela that were selected and trained for months to act. That's because the filmakers believed that not being able to recognize the ones on the screen would give a more authentic feeling to the movie. It was really shot on 16mm like you pointed out. That actor that you recognized is Seu Jorge and he's also a professional singer. It was based on a book that is even more brutal than the film. Totally recommend it too. When they show tvs turned on on this movie, those are actual transmissions that happened in real life back in the 70s This movie was produced and shot entirely in Brazil, by brazilian people. Back in the early 2000's (when Blockbuster was still around) I rented a movie for what I thought would be a typical friday night. When I opened the DVD case the wrong DVD was in there. Instead of exchanging it I decided to give it a chance. After the movie was done I was so smitten that I called up one of my friends and told them that they have to see this film right away! This started a chain reaction amongst our little crew. I can't tell you the amount of times I 've rewatched it since. City of God is easily in my top 5 favorite films! There are so many things that make this film great, too many to list. The fact that I stumbled across this film accidentally makes the experience all the more great!

Definitely a masterpiece! I rented it back in the day and loved every second of it. One of the important foreign films for me, one of the films that really made me ache for more non-english speaking films as they're STILL fairly rare on global markets. So many stories that we're missing out on, so many movies we never get to see, so many languages and cultures we don't get to experience because the markets are dominated by english-speaking movies. Here's to hoping that we'll start to see more and more of those, instead of having to seek them out.. or stumbling onto them by luck like I happened to! And much love to all the brazilians in the comments, all the way from Finland!

Appreciate it brother, our films are pretty deep, you know? Shows kinda a brutal reality about some serious things. Can I suggest another brazilian film? "Tropa de Elite (2007)", probably you gonna enjoy! Love from Brazil

That chain of scenes where the main character goes around trying to rob people, but can't bring himself to because everyone is so nice is just gold. Hard to appreciate on first viewing because the rest of the film is pretty heavy, but one of my funniest comedy scenes ever.

You should really watch " O auto da compadecida" is a tragedy/comedy and it's a perfect Brazilian classic.

City of God really connected to my roots despite being of Asian Filipino Descent - my father told me during his youth in the 50s that the corruption of police and criminal youth strike in a similar fashion in the Philippines, the same showed in this movie. I firmly believe that in any poverty-stricken place especially in Portuguese/Spanish speaking colonized countries, everyone has their own rendition of a 'City of God' story. Everyone tries to escape the beautiful poverty of these countries in hopes of a better life but unfortunately, not all can survive. Great Reaction James :)

Believe me, most brazilians don't feel connected to this movie, the biggest hit in Brazil, was actually the opposite of this movie, wich is Elite Squad, it is about the elite police squad from Rio de Janeiro, know as BOPE... Two are the reasons for this: First that most brazilians don't live in favelas, vast majority of brazilians are middle class and know little about this reality. Second is that this movie is in the 70's or 80's (i really don't remember), and so, many of us didn't actually live this times... Elite Squad is more contemporary movie, it pass more or less a few months from the olimpic games, an age that crime is rampant in Brazil. So yeah, most brazilians didn't like all that much City of God as we do with Elite Squad.

@@efxnews4776 “most Brazilians didn’t like all that much” what? It’s an all time classic. It makes Brazilians proud. Steven Spielberg asked Fernando Meirelles for advice on cinematography after watching it. It shows how drug trafficking became what it is in Rio today through a true story. Just because it isn’t the reality of most in our country, doesn’t mean it isn’t an incredibly executed, entertaining film that shows the reality of a lot of people. In fact, that’s why it amazes most people: we get to know about a reality that isn’t ours and yet has shaped millions of our poorest for decades. By your logic, we can’t like most movies from other countries because they show a reality that isn’t ours. Elite Squad is also a great movie, but it shows a completely different perspective. I don’t think it’s worth to compare them like this.

I remember watching this film back in England all those years ago. The apparent reality of it is what made it so shocking to me. Certainly not like any Hollywood movie I'd ever seen. These days, I actually live in Brazil... been here 11 years. Can't imagine ever going back to live in England - Brazil is an amazing place! This is just a small rural town though... no favelas here. From what I see in the news on a regular basis, little has changed in the favelas of Rio. Very sad. Not helped by the huge wealth gap that still exists here.

This movie was so stunning when it appeared. There was really no notion of an Brazilian film industry in Northern Europe and then out of nowhere this amazing piece of art just popped up.

In some movies the language doesn’t make any difference, but in this one, with so many ‘favela expressions’, we loose a lot using the subtitles

Couple of things you'll want to know. 1, most of the actors in this movie were not actors. They were in fact residents of the City of God favela in Rio--including the movie's mains. 2, the movie is based on a Brazilian novelist's memoir of growing up in the favela--most of which is nonfictional but that incorporates the rumors and urban legends of the community there. Actual footage of the most famous gangsters plays during the credits. 3, City of God was creatively influenced by one of Luis Bunuel's best known Mexican movies "Los Olvidados," a movie about juvenile delinquency in Mexico City which was so scandalous that Frida Kahlo angrily confronted Bunuel during the film's premiere.

Hi James, Brazilian here! It's great seeing an American reacting to this film. Hope you watch some more Brazilian cinema in the future. Personally I have always been interested in seeing a non-Brazilian reacting to a movie called "The Dog's Will" ("O Auto da Compadecida", in Brazil), due to how particular it is to our culture. A lot of slang, Brazilian expressions, and a lot of cultural references that I wonder how would the movie even work without knowing these things. But apparently, the book in which the movie is based on sold well around the world, so who knows, maybe the movie still works for a non-Brazilian. Anyways, really enjoy your work!

This is one of the greatest Brazilian movies EVER. Its brutal and raw, and makes us really feel the characters. One of my favs.

Amazing reaction, man! Thanks for reacting to this movie, it's one of the masterpieces not only of Brazilian cinema, but cinema in general. It gives me goosebumps in almost every scene. Some things I want to say: - The majority of the actors in this film were not professional actors at the time and they came from the slum of City of God itself. They had some very tough acting training with casting coach Fátima Toledo. - Yes, great eye there! The actor who portrayed Knockout Ned was the musician Seu Jorge, who also appears in Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou playing David Bowie cover songs. - You praised the dialogue but it's so much more complex and nuanced in Portuguese, full of untranslatable slang terms and such. The subtitles simplify the dialogues and narration. But don't get me wrong, it's still some great subtitling work there though. It's a hard craft. - It's interesting how you said it looked like the films of Edgar Wright, Wes Anderson and Guy Ritchie. I've never made those connections. I guess it might look like Guy Ritchie because of the Quentin Tarantino influence that the film certainly shows (the differing points of view, the non-linear narrative etc.). I also think that it gets A LOT from Martin Scorsese's films, maybe the greatest influence for the movie, but City of God adds a much more grim, documentary-like realism to this style. - The film was nominated for four Academy Awards: Cinematography, Director, Editing and Writing. Unfortunately, it didn't win any of these (I think it deserved at least the Editing award but it was hard competing with The Lord of the Rings, that won every and each one of its 11 nominations). It wasn't nominated for Foreign Language Film or else it would have won easily. I think it was because it had already been nominated for more than 3 awards or something like that, I'm not sure. Such an injustice. I don't think this rule applies anymore, since Parasite won both Best Film and Best International Film together with 2 other awards.

Na verdade, Cidade de Deus é de 2002, e não conseguiu indicação a filme estrangeiro naquele ano, não foi tão bem recebido. Eles lançaram o filme nos EUA só em 2003, e o filme ganhou status de obra prima, assim conseguindo as quatros indicações para o Oscar 2004, mas não podia mais concorrer a filme estrangeiro, pois filme estrangeiro é do ano em que foi lançado no país de origem.

@@JamesVSCinema he was original released in 2002 in Brazil, but the academy didn't appreciate the film at first, so he wasn't nominated for best foreign film, but in the next year with a great marketing for the Weinstein Company they get 4 nomination, however he wasn't allowed to be nominated for best foreign film and get the bad lucky to compete with the return of the king and all categories

The biggest joke in the history of the Academy is nominating the movie for major categories but not for best foreign film. And still to this day Brazil doesn't have that Oscar

As a Brazilian, I had a high school teacher ask us to watch this when it was out on theaters. I left the theater completely horrified, traumatized, nauseous... I grew up very far away from Rio, and my town didn't have a crime record that was even close to what we hear about in Rio. I'm pretty sure my teacher had no idea what he was talking about when he asked us to watch this... I was probably 13-14 when I watched it. I could never gather up the courage to watch it again. I'm glad you made this reaction and talked about more than the violence and rough aspects of it. I'm glad to know that it was a very thought out movie with great scenes, angles, etc... I'm happy to know we have such amazing talents behind the cameras as well as on camera in Brazil. Maybe one day I'll gather some strength and try to watch it again.

I'm pretty sure he had an idea and saw it himself before telling you to watch it, he is an adult, no matter if he comes off as a nice teacher persona, we all are adults underneath and watch and can relate to anything.

@@CBarros91 Oh, I definitely know that. I just meant that my hometown is a pretty small town and we had a very low crime rate. My parents have been living in Rio for over 5 years now, and I know it is very different from what was portrayed.

​@@nameless.greyceo Well... I am a teacher, and have been a teacher for over 10 years. If I ask my students to do an assignment/watch something, I will always have a purpose behind it. My high school teacher asked us to watch this on the theater. He never had one single discussion about it later on. The whole extent of the assignment was to ask if we did it. So, no... I don't think he had an idea of why he asked us to watch it.. He was a Portuguese language teacher and never had a discussion over language or even culture shown in the movie. Must be awesome to only have had awesome teachers in your life!

@@lolroque me too i teach english around the world with tefl and i sometimes tell my students to watch fight club or the hurt locker just because, fu** it, everyone is different and there own person you never know, not everyone follows the rules.

this movie is so much better to us cause it’s literally showing our reality, it just don’t look like fiction to us

Hey James, "City of God" is certainly the best foreign language film I've ever seen, i seen this this when it came out, and that scene with the kid shooting another kid.!!!, wow.!!!, i was so shocked, there is also a TV series aswell, and most of the "Cast" are not real actor's, "City of God" is truly insane, but it's absolutely great.!!!, and i can't believe its nearly 20 year's old, looks like it was made yesterday, it's so good, but it should have been called "City Of Too Many Guns".!!!.... 👍

@@fefaccio yeah, thats right, it's majority of the young cast that are local people that they used, not actors, most of the Adults have been in some sort of other films and TV shows, but yeah mostly non professional actors make up most of the cast. Its an Absolutely Stunning Film, and its really not dated at all, looks like a new film still, its great. 👍

@@gambarusso No, I definitely mean "City Of God", it's well documented that a lot of the cast are not Real Actors, and yeah "City Of Men" is the exact same as well, watch the "making of film" on the Blueray Disc to see, most of young cast are locals.!

Just imagine doing this type of editing so long ago... I've seen this movie like 20 times throughout my life just because it's so good and it was part of my childhood, what a masterpiece 🔥

This is not just a gruesome film, it's a gruesome reality.

'City of god' became one of my top 10 of all time before I even finished the film. The cinematography is how you explain cinematography, I'm glad you got to experience the masterpiece. The fact that its a true story and you can read into everything that happened is crazy.

Dude, you don't know how happy I'm right now.. I'm Brazilian and I've been following your channel for a while, so seeing you watching one of Brazil's masterpieces makes me very happy. You def should watch 'Bacurau' another masterpiece from Brazil release in 2019, I really wanna see a perspective of an American on this movie.

The fact this movie did not win an Oscar for its cinematography is one of the biggest crimes in the prize's history. What was done here changed filmmaking forever and some of it still hasn't been replicated to this day. Back when this film came out the Academy had an enormous resistance to give Oscars to foreign films thankfully things changed enough to the point Parasite was able to win.

mann I can't tell you how much I love this movie, I first knew about it back in 02 or 03 because when it came out it really sparked a lot of coversation about how real that scene with the kids looked like (I'm portuguese so the movie was also an instant hit in Portugal). The sad thing about the english version is that a big chunk of the dialog gets lost in translation as it is very hard to translate some of the expressions and ways of speaking that they use. One thing I really really like about the movie is the way they use the narrator to tell the story. I've always felt like the people that say that narration is the lazy path to story telling in movies and the ''show don't tell'' kinda movie critic or director needs to see this movie and understand how narration can become an amazing tool to tell a story. I also think that the way they tell the story is very non "english" as in english speaking countries tend to have a very specific way they tell their stories and each time we try to emulate their structure we fail miserably because it feels fake to us the way it is structured, but in this one ohh boy they nailed the structure of the story to correspond to the way they (brazillians) tell stories, and I think that that is part of the success of this movie, not only to tell a good story but also to tell it in their own voice not tied to the conventions of an industry that is based in a completely different language.

If you are a fan of cinema you most definitely LOVE this film. I was blown away the first time I watched it back in the day and continue to be amazed with each watch. Beautiful!

This movie will always be on my top 5 lists of films. I saw it when it first came out, and changed the way I looked at movies and film making. A true masterpiece.

I started watching your channel because I really appreciated your understanding of films and film making and then I saw you did a review on this 3 years ago and so happy you did because just like you, when I watched this in my freshman year of college when it first came out, my friends and I were jaw-dropped the entire film for just the amazing work of art that it is in cinema and story telling. Your reaction immediately resonated with the same feeling that audience in Boston felt that day. Great film and reaction!

I saw the film one night before going to Rio de Janeiro (my wife was so excited to show this film to me and my friends, she is Brazilian). Of course we saw the film and loved it. The story is enthralling, tense, you are at the edge of your seat. You really care for the characters. Cheers with caipirinhas! Still, it is one of the most brutal films I have ever seen. That scene with the kids is just...brutal. Great film!

This movie will make you appreciate your life so much more and be eternally grateful you never had to grow up in a place like the slums of Rio

Well, believe or not, most brazilians also don't know this reality up and close... Favelas make up for only 3% of the country this days, most are in Rio and São Paulo, and a at least half of the population is actually middle class... is know wonder that Elite Squad, make way more money in Brazil, than City of God...

@@vvshawty don't over simplify the whole situation... Brazil has a big middle class, in fact more than poor people. Folks who live in the favelas are around 3% of the total population, theres states that are very rich and some very poor. The best HDI of Brazil is in the southern states while the worst are in the north. Even tough is not all that unequal. Even those who live in favelas are at least well feed, they can afford a barbecue at least once in a month, so you can't say that they are dying from starvation. Also, most of homeless people are drug addicts, they can get a better life in their situation even if you give the 1 million (in less than a year most will waste all doing exactly the same thing). Biggest problems of Brazil are corruption in the government, terrible administration of public money, and also higher taxes. To simplify, this country is a burocratic hell hole.

One of the most incredible parts was the fact that : based on a true story, so much authenticity in terms of the setting in the Favelas, the dress, atmosphere, EVERYTHING. and unfortunately, a few of these kids became gangsters

Well, that confirms what the movie wants to tell. They werent actors, they were kids that actually lived in a favela.

City of God is amazing. Seu Jorge is the actor you were trying to remember, and yes, he is the one playing David Bowie in that Wes Anderson movie. He is also a singer, as you probably noticed.

City of God will always remain as one of the favorites to me.

Congratulations you just watched one of the best movies ever made. I'm a young Brit and this film will always be one of my favourites.

I really love the contrast of tone in this film. Like you say it is really gritty but other gritty films show beauty in the dark like an act of mercy or sacrifice so a dark moment with a good motive or ending but the beautiful moments in this film are truly beautiful and pure, those scenes on the beach and when he's talking with the reporters have no tinge of darkness to them, so it feels more real because all these separate events paint a bigger and more accurate picture of life.

I met the guy who played Knockabout Ned (Seu Jorge). He was in 'The Life Aquatic' and is a talented musician.

I remember studying this when it came out, when I was in film school. Lol. Got to go to an old fancy theater in downtown Miami to watch it. Excellent. I was so enthralled with everything in this movie. It's funny how you mention street photography. That's so important. I do it all the time. You can find inspiration anywhere.

The edition, camera work is amazing, very talent!

yeah, this is quite a realistic depiction of what happens when kids grow up without any boundaries or supervision.... some just grow older and never learn boudaries, empathy or self reflection

Both actors who did Lil Z (as well as pratically the entire cast), were people from the favela where they shoot the movie (It wasnt shoot in City of God, but another favela the filmakers managed to make an agreement with the traffic dealers). They did auditions to hire people that were from that reallity.

It's just such a masterpiece. The very true and raw art behind it is crazy. All of the actors they used were actually from the City Of God

One of my favorite films of all time! Everything, from the way it's shot, to the acting, to the music- I've loved this movie since High School. Certain scenes still get to me, of course, but I feel like it only makes it that much more powerful.

Such a good movie. Unfortunately there's so much slang and other details lost because the translation is very simplified (I'm Portuguese).

An absolute classic. Saw it as a teenager when it first came out and it blew my mind. Really loving your reactions, my friend.

Man, this is one of the best movies I watched, I was about 10yo with my mom and she watched it with me, for me to understand some things. I watch it from time to time and older I get, harder it beats me. I love this movie and the world has to see it, it's the reality for a lot of Brazilians and that's insane. This is a masterpiece and I never gonna get tired of how amazing the culture of my country is, besides all the violence and crime, is the most amazing country for me. Really. Thanks for watching a piece of our culture!

this film has impressed me and etched itself into my consciousness. I learnt about a world so removed from my own and my heart is fuller for it. it's so beautifully sorrowful and hopeful

I watched this movie in my sociology and anthropology class and find this story and the realities it shows very vivid. It was nice seeing a different point of view and learning about what happened after this movies release as well

The information about the shooting of this film, which can also be found on Imdb, is quite brutal - the filmmakers shot it with members of real gangs, and even had to get permission from the leader of the local gang.

So many people are reacting to this movie lately. Glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Imo this movie is a masterpiece.

It’s a tough yet incredible watch!

I'm from Belgium and this was on belgian television a while ago. I absolutely loved it and watched it later with my friend aswell, absolutely a really good, shocking but inspiring movie.

This is my favorite movie of all time. It was so cool to watch you react to it because I felt the same exact way the first time I watched it! Incredible.

You have no idea how much you just impacted my life. Im an artist but life caused me to loose my purpose. I recently realized that i was so unhappy because i no linger felt that i had a purpose. I was a painter, a writer,a tagger and even a rapper but i thought i missed my time to be a creator...i was soo miserable...I litterally tried to explain this to someone yesterday. Thank you so much.
