Filming in the Cold 🥶 Top Tip For Filmmaking & Camera Gear

I've been doing a lot of filming in the cold recently, extreme cold actually. I share a top tip for protecting filmmaking gear, plus give a quick update of what's been going on with my project at Forest Farm.
This is episode #1 of a new regular series of BTS video vlogs where I share how my transformation from photographer to filmmaker is progressing, share what I've learnt, what I'm working on, talk about the business side of being a content creator and filmmaker, and a whole bunch of other cool stuff that I think of as I go forward.

A new series of Behind The Scenes Vlogs, as many people have asked about what I get up to, and expressed an interest in seeing how my journey unfolds as I move more towards filmmaking.

I absolutely hate filming in the cold! Very nice tips. I never thought of sealing up my gear to temperature acclimate it after filming outside in the cold. The final video turned out perfect as well.

Thanks for watching Thomas. I've always had to take the cold seriously when it comes to shooting in Canadian winters, but more so this year as we've had record tempertures recently. Minus 34ºc ca couple of days back! 🥶

Ah, Simon, I despair at quality filmmakers like yourself who work hard to provide genuine content and get low views… it isn’t fair.

That's okay Ian, it's practice for bigger things down the road! As long as a few people like yourself watch, and appreciate it, I'm happy 🙂

I think we’ll need to get used to shooting in the cold soon, although hopefully not as cold as you guys have been having! I get really paranoid about mould in lenses, and normally leave everything in the bag for as long as possible after coming in, then keep everything in a designated place with a dehumidifier, but I think we might need to look into buying a few peli cases too! Haha, as I write this, it's -35ºc outside today! I believe lenses are the bigger risk with moisture. A dehumidifier is a great idea, although in all the years I've been shooting in extreme cold, slow acclimatization has proven successful.

I try to do the same when coming in from the cold and usually have a good amount of desiccant in the bags as well.

Cute, they're a nuisance most of the time, ruining my shots!
