Filming in the Cold | BMPCC 4K / 6K in Sub-Zero Temperatures

After traveling to Antarctica I got asked a lot about how the camera performed. Here is my experience shooting in cold temperatures with the BMPCC4K and 6K, as well as general tips for cold weather filming. Antarctica Visual Diaries : • Antarctica Visual Diar...
A few weeks ago I asked you guys if you wanted me to do a video about shooting in the cold with the BMPCC6K since I received so many questions about it after my trip to Antarctica, so here it is :).
For this video I am gonna do a Q&A style.
I’ll use the questions I got asked the most as well as the ones you guys wrote on the post I did a couple of weeks ago.
I will talk about using the bmpcc4k and 6k in different locations and I will also give you some tips about shooting in the cold.

I took a P6K to Scotland during the winter. It got pretty wet due to mist, but it still worked great. Had more issues wiping the lens lol. I did try keeping it in my backpack as much as I could during those weather conditions, especially when my instincts kicked in. Thankfully nothing happened, wouldn't recommend risking it!

I have a BMPCC 6K and I had to shoot in the rain, but the day before I did check the weather so I grabbed some clear plastic and some tape and made a makeshift camera cover, rigged up and everything. And it was ok no water got on the camera. I’m going to be filming in the snow in a few weeks as well so this video was very helpful. So I guess I would say. When I’m doubt, wrap your camera in plastic :P

Anywhere around 0C/32F makes my 6k act up. If I turn it off with an external battery, it won’t power back on until it’s warmed up with a heater. Cold breeze would drop the frame too. It’s very frustrating. I was considering using little hand warmers that you put in gloves inside the internal battery pack to keep it warm. I don’t know. Perhaps even those underwater camera bags.

I enjoy your videos Flo, but this one, I don't know... you haven't been in the cold yet. :) I'm from central Canada. 32c today, but I've shot with my BMPCC4k and my Mavic Air at -30c. By and large, still similar to what you've said, but battery life decreases by 25-30%, and lens rings don't always spin as quickly as you'd like. Also, it's important to start with warmish batteries, rather than letting them get to -30c. I've done tests with the MA. If you let the battery get to -30, it files for about 30 seconds, and the battery quits. Come over some time. Winter is great.

Filmed a timelapse of the northern lights over 4hrs ranging from -28°F to -34°F here in Alaska. Camera did just fine. No fogging up of the lens or finicky shut downs due to cold. Bmpcc 4k is a tank

I did think about the R5 for a while as I am a Canon shooter too but as a proper video camera it doesn't make a lot of sense. Too limited and way too expensive. In my opinion it is a great hybrid camera for people that need to shoot 50% stills and 50% video, and perfect for travel or youtube content. I have never owned Sony so it wouldn't make sense for me since I don't own any lenses, although I am genuinely impressed by the camera. Seems even better than the R5 in a lot of ways.
