Colorista is not film emulation but for color job it does well enough. What do you say Gerald? You can do the VDO on Colorista too from redgiant.

perhaps the white balance temp/tint is being applied as linear light. I find that that transfer mode compositing in linear light really makes coloring look more filmic and not rec. 709 crushing. also, another transfer mode (color), with levels white output 140rgb can clip saturation to film colors. your vectorscope will get fatter but not extend outwards, just like film.

Whether it's h.264 or ProRes RAW, whether I color correct first or just use uncorrected log footage, as soon as I drop FilmConvert on the clip it looks horrible, toooooo dark, too contrasty, skin tones shot to shit. The only way to get it even half way decent is to turn the opacity down on the adjustment layer I put FC on. In other words way too much work to even get my video back to decent. Any advice, oh Great Undone?

Question for an old school photographer. When you change the ISO on a digital camera, do you get a corresponding change in the grain of the image? In the same way that changing from one film roll to a different roll of film with a higher ASA gives you an emulsion with larger silver flakes and therefor grainer image?

Thanks for being so helpful

  • @geraldundone

Hey! Thanks. I've used them in the past, but I'm not a huge fan of them. I don't like the halation they offer. That bloomy light glow around highlights. There are diffusion filters that soften without causing halation, but that's VERY easy to reproduce in post. My technique is to shoot with 0 output sharpening and no diffusion filters and then decide what to do with that footage down the line. Gives me the most neutral starting point.

Hi, I love the look of the Film Convert Nitrate film stock emulations, however, over the last several months whenever I apply FCN to a clip it completely slows down Final Cut Pro X. Why is this? Other plugins don’t slow my system down in this way. The rendering takes forever - even if I turn off FCPX background rendering, FCN grinds my FCPX to a halt. What could be causing this and what do you recommend to improve this? Thanks.

Hi there, sorry for the late reply - yes, FilmConvert works with BRaw footage, you just need to set the Clip Settings to either Gen4 or Gen5 color science

@@dogisnotreal1 If you see a lot of these types of instruction videos, they are almost always using white or fair skinned model subjects as examples for color grading. So, it's refreshing when a dark skinned beauty is the subject.

When using HLG on a Sony camera, we tended to use BT.2020 with the Leeming Lut, but now you recommend using Rec709 for FilmConvert Nitrate. Could you please explain this?

FilmConvert Nitrate doesn't support full HDR grading yet, so if you're intending to deliver an HDR output, stick with a full HDR workflow or use ACES.
