Isn’t Han’s driving actually pretty good up to that point at the start though? He pulls some good drifts and manages to navigate a crowded street. Also, he must have some decent knowledge to be able to flip a car he stole the exact same day 90 degrees on command. The only thing that actually stops him is overconfidence, he probably would have made it otherwise.

Not all militaries have had clear chains of command, and certainly haven't had slow progressive promotion structures like the modern established military. And then there are honorary ranks. For one, the Rebel Alliance, is an Alliance, not an individual military. Maybe he is a general of the Corellian faction and only commands like 8 people. IDK

I mean with L3 in the Falcon, it's just like having a really detailed google maps installed for your car. So maybe it tells you where to go, but you still have to be good at driving to follow the route. Not to mention, maybe the reason why Han's flying got good when he was in the Falcon is that the Falcon is a good ship. I mean most of the time you hear Han bragging more about his ship, calling it the "fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy". Han isn't a failure of a pilot, he's a great pilot with an even greater ship.

Well he did come into the Rebellion with a wealth of flight experience and his own ship capable of light speed. Before he even officially joined the Rebellion he rescued Princess Leia, helped get the plans to the Rebel base, and rescued Luke Skywalker so he could destroy the Death Star which means he Luke helped save the universe twice and rescued a very important member of the Rebellion and brought in a ship with light speed capability that he maintained ownership of all in one day. So it would make sense that his starting rank would be pretty high. Then after that he saved Luke from freezing to death and saved Leia from the attack on Hoth, saved from the Star Destroyer with his ingenious move of landing in top of the ship and powering down to hide from their sensors then just disconnecting and drifting away when they resleased their garbage and to top it off brought Lando and lord knows how many more new recruit from the Sky City into the Rebel Alliance which probably earned him a promotion or two...

In Legends he graduated the Imperial Academy and was a Lt. before deserting. His skills in the films came from his training and experience. He held legit military ranks before they gave him a command.

Han was able to pilot the Millennium Falcon, A freighter through the maelstrom while being pursued by TIE fighters. He held his own for the duration until L3 could be hooked up to the navigation system. Han is a good pilot.

How to win the war: 1. Get a bunch of recicled Vulture droid-fighters or other seppy aircraft. 2. Ctrl+c 3. Ctrl+v 4. Repeat. 5. Profit.

Rey doesn’t count cos she started off with max stats

@@ghuxsuperfan3066 that is a point, and I understand that he could have learned a thing or two, but the point of him bring kicked out still means he wasnt learning a flying. The reason doesnt really matter all that mich, especially since he crashed the very next time he tried to fly. So while he might have improved, that improvement isnt shown until the AI is inside the (I'm so sorry for my spelling) melenimum falcon, and is only continued to be shown while inside that very same aircraft. Even when no one is in the cockpit or the pilot is different. The theory may be wrong, but it is good enough to hold up (at least in my opinion)

@@ghuxsuperfan3066 well, I can't prove that, but due to the fact the crashed into a mountain instead of turning the very next time he flew, probably points toward him not learning that move in class. His thread the needle move, is super complex to pull off, and since Han isn't excelling in the basics of flight, I think it's safe to assume he didn't learn it in flight school. Like, I suck at basic Spanish, so I'm not going to be taught advanced or honors Spanish. In comparison, Han sucks at basic flying, so it doesn't make sense that he would be taught or that he would excel in complex flight maneuvers.

Just rewatched the scene of the Kessel run. Yes L3 is interfaced with the ship and she is a GPS of sorts she doesnt fly for him. Not only that, Han does crazy manoeuvers before she is even connected. (The drft in the asteroid). He was ok at best sure because he was overconfident and reckless but he found a ship that could keep up with him. Even before L3 giving the exact position out he just knew "left-ish" he says "I see it". He's also better than Lando there

Also, what Disney could have put in that Millennium Falcon chase scene is that Tey suddenly comments: “I’ve never flown this thing before, yet it’s responding to me more smoothly than I imagined. It’s almost like the ship is flying *itself.* “

Howdy so I have just gotten around to finally watching Solo and I have to respectfully disagree with this theory. Normally I don’t comment on these videos agree or disagree but for the sake of discourse I might as well. So, firstly Han wasn’t kicked out of flight school because of his flying ability, he was kicked out specifically for “having a mind of his own” which implies either he disobeyed orders or he tried to specialize his own piloting style. Secondly, in the open minutes on Corellia it is true that Han fails the “thread the needle” maneuver, but he almost makes it and simply miscalculates the width of the alleyway, which says nothing about his piloting ability. Lastly, L3’s consciousness is put into the falcons Navicomputer, meaning she can help the ship to navigate, but she has no actual control over the flying of the ship itself, meaning that Han’s increase of skill is evident as he navigates the Maelstrom. Furthermore, he does some impressive flying to evade the TIE fighters before L3 was ever uploaded into the computer. So, I believe it is safe to say that Han Solo is and will always be the PILOT who made the Kessel run in 12 Parsecs. But hey that’s just a theory, my theory. Thanks for reading.

I'd agree with this. It helps because none of the disney movies are actually worthy of being considered canon except for maybe rouge one. rey knowing how to fly was just a bad writing decision, not a well thought out plot point.

Okay MattPat, here is something you missed. Solo didn't get kicked out of the flight academy because of he lacked skill, he got kicked out because he wanted to think for himself (he didn't like being ordered around). So there is that for you.

It also speaks to the ship, since a faster ship means you could, at least in theory, cut things much closer since you could be gone or nearly gone by the time someone spots you

Your theory makes sense and I agree. But is it correct to call him a fraud? It's been a while since I've watched the Original Trilogy, but when I think about Han boasting I can't remember when he boasts about his flying skills. It's usually him bragging about his ship. He says- when trying to sell to Obi-Wan and Luke- that his SHIP made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, not himself. Just a thought. It also gives deeper meaning every time Lando and Han say it's not their fault when the hyperdrive fails. XD

The expanded universe version was much cooler. He was at the top of his class at pilot academy, but leaves imperial service when he commits insubordination by helping out a wookie slave that was being abused (Chewbacca). Wedge and Hobbie Klivian are also much cooler in the EU. Wedge started out as a smuggler who worked for the Rebellion, while Hobbie defected with Biggs after they mutinied and took over a modified acclamator repurposed to be a fighter carrier.

Still, I've gotta say... It was old George's fault for selling out in the first place. He just couldn't let it end in peace. But maybe he wanted it to be this way...? A lot of creators end up regretting certain choices they've made & would rather see the things that they create die than have to appeal to the never-ending demands of fans. I mean, anything's possible.

While the theory does make some good points, it ignores the fact that Rey is force sensitive and strong with the force so her ability to thread the needle could be due to the fact she has sharper reflexes (as Force users tend to be gifted pilots especially if they are a protagonist, which includes Anakin, Luke, and by extension Rey). Not saying the Falcon's navigator didn't help, but I think there is more to Rey's piloting skills than just having the best navigation computer in the galaxy. Personally I think that Disney just didn't know how to write a good Han Solo movie.

gameboyreed4909 No the problem is that the cords couldn’t hold the material and Han wouldn’t be able to get away from Infis Nest while holding it carefully. He really didn’t have a choice in that situation. Plus the ship he’s flying is complicated (just look at all the buttons on the ceiling and front panel) and Rio even says himself “Wow kid you weren’t lying! You’re one hell of a pilot!”

I always thought Han lied about the Kessle Run just to get more money out of Obi Wan and Luke. Obi Wan even gives him a look of disbelieve as he's bragging about it.

Well I know one episode Spongebob aaid that he had to pay Mr Krabs to work, while in others he is refered to getting a pay check and once Mr Krabs fires him so he can save money. I'm not sure how easy it would be to figure out how much he makes, because the show can be pretry inconsistent.

This is wrong however becuse in episode 5 the crew fixes the ships hyperdrive and also wipes the computer as C3PO says it too chatty. After this han pilots just as well as he normally does an though L3 is dead and wiped from the falcon at this point.

Wait couldn’t that just mean that Han was a good pilot until Disney took over?

Although I will admit that where he placed it in the script makes it sound like Han won the original card game, he never specifically says that. All he says is that Han won the Falcon in a card game. He never says that he won it in the earlier card game.

You kept saying he wasn’t a good smuggler as well, then never showed any evidence other than the one scene in Solo where he blows up the cargo. In tfa, he hadn’t had the millennium falcon in years, but he had been doing smuggling mission a lot, and that most likely implies that he had to have been a decent pilot.

dragonwaz well once you have a bounty on your head from one of the most feared gangster in the galaxy, it's understandable that jobs would be hard to come by out if either fear of angering the Hutt or just not wanting to bother to have the extra risk your runner getting gunned down/caught by a bunch of bounty hunters on top of the already pretty big risks that come with smuggling. I mean although in the movie we only hear that Han jettison the cargo to avoid an Imperial inspection, in Legends we find out that the cargo was partly slaves which Han purposely allowed to escape, kind of cementing the whole "scoundrel with a heart of gold" thing he has going on.

Okay so he got the description of the movie wrong in the order of events, Rey in force awakens specifically says she’s a pilot, the thread the needle move has not only been done in the millennium falcon (Poe does it in last Jedi while destroying the dreadnought cannons and running from tie fighters), it was also chewy who was piloting on Crait and Rey was the gunner, everybody who has done the thread the needle move has been known at LEAST as a pretty good pilot (lando, Han, chewy, and Rey), Han was also trying to fly away from the mountains but the people on speeder bikes were pulling on the coaxium container pulling Han towards the mountains forcing him to let go of the coaxium, Han was kicked out of flight school because he was a rule breaker not because he was a crappy pilot (it’s a school they wouldn’t kick him completely out they would just make him go back to the basics or something), it also shows Rey and Han controlling the falcon while they were doing the move sometimes. Ok... I THINK I’m done (I feel very strongly about Star Wars and I’m sorry if I make you mad it’s just that Han is one of my fav characters so...).

He does one thing and instantly gets promoted to general. Are you sure this is not Skyrim?

Actually MatPat, *_Han IS the best in the Galaxy._* I also saw Solo so I know that L3-37's memory drives wasn't installed into the Falcon's Navigational System until about halfway through Han's flight through the Kessel Run _and even then_ all those drives did was find a safe path, the dialogue given in the scene makes it *very* clear that Han still had to actually pilot the ship. _In other words,_ L3 can't fly the ship in her current state. And before it was installed he was still piloting, _even pulling off an evasive manoeuvre that killed a friend of his when they tried it,_ through a Cosmic Storm where you couldn't more than ten metres ahead of you, as well as been filled with random asteroids. And later on in *Episode V* when he was running through from the Empire he successfully piloted through an Asteroid Field, while other pilots in smaller ships _crash & burned._ In real-life many sailors fear going through waters known for having Glaciers, cause even if they know to look out for them, they have no clue as to where those Glaciers are at the moment or what direction they're heading, it's a similar thing with asteroid fields, cause even if you can see the asteroids, you have no idea what path they are gong to take as there are just too many factor, for instance, the asteroids might knock each other around, thus constantly changing their course. And yes, he did pull of some pretty good evasive manoeuvres even getting two Star Destroyers to crash into on another, and when they did start heading for the Asteroid Field while performing repairs, they missed one by luck before the Falcon started getting hit by smaller asteroids, which didn't destroy the ship due to the deflector shields been up, which caused Han and Chewie to did the repairs to go back to flying the ship. *Seriously watch the scene again:* kzread.info/dash/bejne/fap-pqutc5nadZM.html Also *Episode VII* shows exactly why he's the best pilot in the Galaxy when he successfully lightspeeds past the First Order's refractor shields , then pulls out of Lightspeed before the Falcon could end up crashing into the planet. Nobody else has that unique combination of Skill & Luck to even have a hope of pull that off As for Rey been able to pilot so well, a prequel comic to *Episode VII* reveals that she's self-taught via using flight simulator programs and the Prequel movies, particularly *Episode I* during the tuning up of Anakin's Pod Racer, reveals Force-Sensitive people are natural pilots who can subconsciously react to things before they even happen Finally, to 100% put your argument to bed. I the canon tv show, *Star Wars Rebels* one of the main characters, Hera Syndulla, is widely recognised in-universe as one of the best pilots in the Galaxy and flies a completely different ship, yet even she needs her droid Chopper or C1-10P for navigational purposes

Other than what Han was doing on the Kesssel Run while the droid was currently dead and lying on a table..... Edit: During the Kessel Run, when they were being pursued by imperial star fighters, The navigation droid had been shot and Han was expertly flying the Millennium Falcon, dodging and destroying several Tie Fighters.

I think the original movies were pretty clear that most of what Han was saying was bravado. He was talking himself up as this fantastic pilot, but nobody actually believed him. Han's a decent pilot, but he's no master of the craft.

So this is just of group of arguments that show this theory ain't that solid. For one L3 is a navigation droid, plotting courses for Han to follow but not actually piloting. An when Han steps away, Chewbacca is the one that steps in who has shown to be a capable flyer himself. And other pilot we see is lando who is a great pilot himself. When it comes to Rey, after seeing the new trilogy i do not believe at all that Kennedy and Disney would ever know or think of L3 being the reason why Rey is good at flying. They just wanted her to be awesome at everything. (Side Note: Me as a long time fan no longer consider the new trilogy canon in my book). But also in the new trilogy though we come across Han in command of a bigger ship, possibly in bigger troubles than he was in the OG trilogy leading us to believe that he didn't need the falcon to be a good pilot and a successful smuggler. And back to the OG trilogy, i never really got the idea that they were trying to paint Han as this super amazing pilot in the first place. I always thought that they were just trying to make him off to be as the cool anti-hero guy who was a really good smuggler. It was Luke that the film was letting us know multiple times, was a good pilot, to have us believe he could hold is own in the final big battle and be the hero. So in ending this little rant 2 years after this video came out. Han is good pilot and smuggler not a flat out liar. An the new Disney trilogy is garbage an never happened.

Seriously I’m convinced this is an unspoken tradition with Matpat... literally all of his Star Wars theories are absolutely wrong and he knows it. In return of Jedi,that Lando scene you were talking about at a bit earlier Han Solo flew a different ship and flew it just as well.

You forgot to mention how C-3PO noted that the Falcon had a strange programming language when they were in the cave. Due to him being a protocol droid, he is likely not proficient in the piloting droid's (aka L3) language.

He only dropped the payload because the people on the bikes were attached to it and there would have been no way to get them off it and keep the payload

A few problems with this theory: 1: L3 helped with navigation, not piloting, 2: Han was piloting the Falcon quite nicely during the minutes on screen before L3 was plugged in. 3: There are links between force sensitivity and piloting skills, Rey could have flown it

hmm, would you mind offering some evidence in the form of examples? I'm curious to understand why you think there's force related links to piloting skills. Because a skill by definition is learned it is not inherent.

This is the opposite of, “I SWEAR IT THE CONTROLLER!!”

Navigation isn't exactly the same as flight maneuver. Knowing where to go doesn't make you knowledgeable on what kind of flight pattern will work in deadly spacing (ha, get it?). She has parts from an astromech droid, but those are mainly for repairs and warp navigation with light piloting control much like R2D2. Sorry Matt, this one isn't that serious of a gotcha moment.

L3-37 is a navigational computer for Hyperspace calculations, not a computer for tight maneuvers in Realspace.

GPSs arent sentient, dont have memories and dont learn. Droids in Star Wars however, have been continually shown to have all those attributes *in addition* to personalities.

Also, It puts a WHOLE new meaning when Han refers to the Falcon as "She" Since L3-37 is a female robot and is downloaded to the ship.

All vehicles are "she", whether it's a classic car, a fishing boat, or a spaceship. It's a long, time-honored tradition when men spent a long time alone doing work with their vehicle as their only companion, so it was donned with a moniker (hence ship names). You also see this in Australia when swagmen (men who would travel across the Outback) named their bedroll pack, leading to the term "Waltzing Mathilda"

His age in the Classic series is well established and coherent, and he says he’s 953 in “Time and the Rani.” We know the Time War lasted 400 years. But the Tenth Doctor says he’s 903. The thing about Doctor Who is there’s so much media besides the show, and the BBC doesn’t have an established “canon”, but in an Eighth Doctor book he said he lost count and started counting again from his regeneration, which fits with the Time War happening and other events. So according to this theory when the Doctor in the modern show says he’s 900 years old, he may be counting from when he started over. But who knows.

I hate to break it to you MatPat, but they kinda mentioned how L3-37 was the one doing the flying in Solo...
