Sena may have traveled to Maui's island and had a relationship with him, but couldn't get him out of exile because she wasn't the "chosen one", therefore leaving and meeting the chief on Moana's island. To explain the pig, he would be Moana's older brother and left with Sena during her departure.

I was just about to comment this. I doubt the mom would have left because I think in the movie, they say they all have remained on the island for a long time and it was made a rule before Moana was born that people couldn't leave. So the mom being able to sneak away for the time it would take to fall in love with Maui and get pregnant and make it back to her home island would be too long of a disappearance and the islanders would winder where she went for all that time.

Richard Cano Im Tongan (of Polynesian decent) - and 'Puaka' means pig in Tongan. So to me it makes sense that they called the pig 'Pua' for short in the movie

I love the amount of research you put into this theory in particular. Also, Pua's adorable and I'm totally not surprised he's Moana's brother.

Here's an alternate idea: what if Moana's demigod status was cause of Tui and not Maui? Remember, Tala is Tui's mother, and we just established that Tala is the goddess of the stars, so it's likely hereditary, but the twist is that Teui doesn't know it, or at least is trying to ignore it for as long as he's trying to protect Moana from the sea (see what I did there)😅

Monkey Girl it's wrong Maui has been on an island for 1000 years, and moana is a teenager. I think that the gods chose moana through the ocean when she saved a baby turtle. She was just a baby, and had to chose between a pretty shell and saving a turtle. I know for a fact an average baby would usually pick up a turtle and try to keep it, and not try to help it get away from them. Very nice, I know next to nothing about Polynesian mythologies so I would believe it if you told me there's a story of a human, pig and rooster being the children of an eel and a hummingbird. But apart from Maui being on an island for forever while the mother was supposedly human everything seems seamless :) And yes, Disney does put a lot of effort into their animations!

I always wondered why Moana’s “father” had hair straighter than Moana’s, but Maui’s hair was exactly the same. huh.

I think this theory could work!! The evidence that Matt shared here is great, and I have noticed that both Maui and Moana share a few genetic traits as well. BUT -- I've recently rewatched the movie and I started thinking about this thepry as I was watching, up until the scene where it showed the stones on the mountain of Motunui, which represents all of the people who took on the role of cheif after Maui caused the oceans to become too ruthless to voyage- in multiple scenes you can see the several generations (I counted over 10 for sure) that were there after Maui took the heart- so either Moana, Pua and their mother are a thousand years old and don't look the part (which seems unlikely since nobody else acknowledges it) or Maui would have had to be on the Motunui Island and NOT stranded on his own island after he took the heart in order for this theory to make sense. The theory of Maui and Moana being related is literally one of my faves, but I think I accidentally debunked it just bc I rewatched Moana as a comfort film lmfao, anyone got any other ideas of how they could be related?

maui isnt only a maori legend xd, maui is a god within all the polynesian islands. theres legends told about him in tonga, niue, samoa, fiji and more.

Let’s appreciate really, quick how hard Mat tried.

First time around I was too focused on what was going on, the amazing visuals and such... but second time I've picked up on that "no mortal can enter Lalotai" myself! The fact that Moana had already, unknowingly, become a Goddess by that point - but more likely since the moment the ocean chose her - is literally the only sensible explanation for her surviving that fall, the impact with the water, and what happened afterward!

Here's an alternative to her imperviousness: She had the stone that can create life itself hanging from her neck the entire time, every time she would otherwise die. So there's that.

ツSlayer1ツ also the reason he says “but that’s just a theory” is because he’s not 100% sure that it’s correct... until a director confirms. He’s basically saying “sure this makes a lot of sense but it’s not true until the director says so”

So... I already kind of figured... The peices aren't hard to put together and just the mere fact that she can nit only speak, but control the icean is usually not given to any random mortal.

It’s like Percy Jackson, who is a son of the sea, can survive a fall from the top of the St. Louis Arch in water and can breathe under there, and Moana, daughter of the sea, can do the same.

Matpat: she's the exact opposite of dead... me: alive Matpat: a GOD!!!

I think another fact that points to Moana being a god (not DEMIgod) is when Tamatoa says in his song: "But you can't expect a demigod to beat a decapod" And, in the movie, it's actually Moana who "defeats" Tamatoa by tricking him and then running away. I hope you see this MatPat.

Besides, these kinds of theories are sort of....like a game of jenga. Sure, you can take bits and pieces, but you'd have to take out quite a few before the whole entire thing comes crumbling down

In Hawaii, we learn about kamapua’a in school! But I would like to add he was given up at an early age to a family on a different island, also it should be noted that “pua” means pig in Hawaiian.
