Film Surround Sound Mixing Setup in Reaper (no 3rd party plug-ins).

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For a long time I wanted to do a tutorial about how to setup a surround sound project for mixing for film using only Reaper and no 3rd party software. Finally here it is. It's not for newbies, so do not expect to find basic actions. 90% of this tut is routing. Hope it'll help for a bunch of you, as it took some time for me to figure it out on my own. If you want to know how I landed on doing surround mixing for a feature with Reaper please visit me at www.tomasdabas.eu/tutorials/re...
There's also a link for downloading a 7.1 Reaper Project made by Andres Villa Torres based on my tutorial at the bottom of the post on my website. Feel free to download it.

    Very useful tutorial, but your mouth noises are really distracting. They can be edited out, however you wouldn't even need to if you drink some warm water before recording, since this reduces mouth clicks significantly. I'm sorry to be so annoying about this, but currently I'm working as a sound engineer for voice overs in a major company and those really bug me. Great tutorial, though! And thanks.

    +Plamen Tsvetanov Great tips, I'm on the same page about the noises. It was an early morning and I needed to cut it before my family gets up, so I was in a hurry. Not a good excuse for a pro right? Thanks again for the tip. Won't happen again. Ever. Also I'm glad my tutorial was helpful. Have a good time on your voice over editor career. And whilst we're on the subject - what do you do if there is a voice over recording of say 20 or 60 minutes full of clicks - like mine?

    Tomas Dabašinskas You are most welcome - and I do understand you quite well - I myself had to do early morning recordings on several occasions. About editing mouth noises - the best way to do it is by hand - either cut them out or redraw the waveform by hand (best in Pro Tools). Of course you can try to use simple declicker first and than do the rest manually. Also in Audition there is a great tool for fixing small selections, but I can't remember how it was called.

    +Plamen Tsvetanov Ahh, was hoping you found something other as good as manual editing... For short TV or whatever ads I do it manually with RX, but for 10+ minutes of recordings I try to use RX's declicking for the whole file. Takes transients from p, t, b, d as well - so I'm not too satisfied with the automatic thing. Was hoping you've have a better automatic solution.

    From commercials to full length movies - manual is the way to go, unfortunately.. it takes me about 2-2.5 hours to edit 25 minutes complicated dialogue. So far I haven't seen a good automated alternative.

    To me as a fellow audio professional, this is not an editing job, it's an ADR and re-upload job. If I may recommend simply moving the mic a little bit further from your mouth, I think you'll see a big improvement. Also, thanks for the helpful tutorial! For everyone who's still watching this tutorial in 2023+ and find it useful and are asking me questions! I haven't worked on surround project probably since I made this tutorial. Reaper has changed a lot, but this tutorial is still valid and everything works. Nariman has proven this in 2023 18th of April. So if something does not sound or mix-down as you think it should it means that somewhere you made a mistake or skipped a step. Anyway - I'm happy this tut helped and is still helping to many people. Oh, and in case you can't find the problem in your routing, try searching harder as asking me for an advice is useless because at this moment YOU understand my routing scheme much better than I do ;)

One thing to notice though : the reasurround has changed since this video was released resulting in no sound (when performing the dialogue test) cause the dot n°1 is out of range : don't hesitate to move it INSIDE the rectangle 12356. Also there is a new setting inside reasurround wich works best is to set "speaker influence" to relative.

    hi there! thanks for the detailed explanation! with me in reaper 64 on mac i cannot recreate the settings you show around 4:00 in reasurround: whenever i set input channelcount to anything below 6 it jumps back up to 6 after a second. that results in me having 6 times ( i believe the same) channel in the field, oviously very messy to position ... i guess you are not here to answer every stupid question but i would definitely appreciate pointers if someone has any! :) - edit: i found that if i reduce the track channels in the routing options to two i can also select as few as two channels in reasurround, but one is not possible, and according to your instruction i should have 6 track channels, right?

    Thanks a lot for the great advice and tutorial, explaining virtually EVERYTHING you do. That's quite remarkable! But... I've come across a problem...: It seems in my case, the Left TOP channel is played on both of my front left and front right speakers (and apparently the same applies to the Right TOP channel), both monitoring channels of course. Is there a way I could fix it on my side? I've verified with a different software, no problem at all on the other software, everything plays fine on each speaker, so it doesn't seem to be a driver problem or anything, it's just me who I have probably misconfigured the settings somehow... Although I think I followed every single step of your tutorial correctly. Is there something I probably did wrongly?

    Hey, thanks for watching and a kind word. Most likely the problem lies in selected Master/Parent send on the Routing window of either custom master track we made @ 2:10 or TOP L / TOP R channel. Because obviously Reaper is sending out two channels of the TOP L and TOP R to both of your speakers equally as it supposed to do by default if you don't tell it otherwise (and default is Master/Parent send checkbox checked). Ooooor it may be that you forgot to uncheck the same Master/Parent send at 10:23, ooooor didn't route the output of master track to the TOP L and TOP R channels correctly (see from 10:27) - Master out 1 to Monitor 1, Master out 2 to Monitor 2. Let me know if that sorted out your problem.

    Good day George! I believe you should be able record directly into the project you created watching my tutorial. You should make a decision if you want to record a single 5.1 track or 6 discrete mono tracks. 2. Also keep in mind that channel order for film (I’m using it in my tut as well) is LRCLFELsRs, not LCRLsRsLFE. If you’ll make your input patching wrong you’ll have mixed up channels (nothing to scary, but you’ll need to do additional job and “untangle” them afterwards). Have fun experimenting and mixing!

    Hi, thank you for this tutorial! I'm migrating from Pro Tools to Reaper so those tutorials are super helpful. One question: Why do you split everything high/low and send it to the LFE? From my understanding the LFE is only for something like bass rumbling FX like an earthquake simulation or a bomb. L C R channels are full-range speakers and can handle the bass. If you check on 5.1 mixes you will hear no music on the LFE (maybe if it's for an impact effect). So is there any reason why you are doing this?

  • @tomasdabasinskas8977

    @tomasdabasinskas8977

    7 жыл бұрын

    Heyyy! Glad I was able to help you out. Your understanding about info that needs to be in LFE channel is correct. Usually there are explosives, steps of monsters etc. I do the low/hi splitting because I monitor (as perhaps most of reaper users do) not on a full range speakers - instead I used a sub + 5 x two way satellites. Also it is the way most home theater setups look like. They use bass management to redirect low information from satellites to sub, other way you will end up with your music being cut off at 80Hz (not that I mixed for home theater, but we need to keep them in mind too, right?). Anyway I split every satellite's range into high/low because I use sub + 5 x two way speakers for monitoring. If you have a sub + 5 x three way speaker setup or mix at a dubbing stage, you can skip the hi/lo splitting as your satellites will most likely handle the lowest notes of your music. I failed to mention that on this tutorial as I was doing it several months after the actual mixing. That's why you're not the first person asking this. We had a revealing conversation on that topic with one guy on my website. Feel free to check it out. Hope I was clear enough and you will get what I was trying to say! Thanks for watching again!

    Maybe you can still add a youtube note in the video that says: "If you use full range speakers or a monitor controller with sub/satellite splitter, just skip the following splitting part." That would make it a perfect tutorial IMO. :)

    Thanks for the video i nice to have it started... In the new cinema systems all speakers are expected to be full-range so having that -6db on all SUB channels for monitoring is still required? why can't it be 0db?

    @tomasdabasinskas8977

    Thanks. Glad you could start mixing. KZread has deleted annotations (comment boxes) so there are a lot of strange things going on and since English obviously is not my native language and I need to speak while doing things, I talk BS in some places and don't explain things the way they should be explained. This tutorial was made for people who have no full-range speakers in their studios, but rather work with a sub and five satellites. If you do have full range speakers at home - you don't need to do all the gain reduction and strange routing. But if you're working like most budget studios the philosophy behind all the gain changes is to replicate full-range speaker behavior in your room as closely as possible without the need to buy the full-range setup. I'm really weak at mathematics, but let us try doing a little mathematics. The LFE channel TOTAL is at +12dB so that it has enough headroom for loud low frequency sounds. We are routing the sub range off all five our satellites to the LFE channel as well. If we don't reduce the gain of those sub ranges of the satellites we'll end up with +6dB boost for dialog music and everything that's not actual LFE (remember LFE in a cinema theater caries only LFE info - no sub information there, but since we don't have full-range speakers, our sub information is played back trough our actual SUB SPEAKER, and we've already set it to be +12dB louder). The other 6dB, I believe (don't remember exactly) have something to do with different filter steepness of the crossover frequency of TOP and SUB channels in the matrix). Or simply put, if you'll make your SUB channels to 0dB instead of -6dB, you'll end up with your low frequencies in full-range satellites 6dB louder than they should be. The best thing - if you have the ability to do a test screening - do it at 0dB and let us all know how it went! After mixing my first feature I had a chance to sit alone in a cinema theater and do a test run just to make sure, my setup works. And it sounded as I expected frequency balance vise. The whole mix was a bit too low in volume, but that was because I have calibrated my room a bit incorrectly.

    @@tomasdabasinskas8977 Thanks for the quick and detailed reply. I am still trying to setup my surround mixing/monitoring setup and still trying to get some notes on proper monitoring levels and routing. I have 2 full range speakers which I am using in the studio and may be i can use some satellite speakers (re-using the 5.1 off the shelf AV receiver/players). I see that in the video the LFE TOTAL is set at +10db and usually while calibrating we keep the LFE channel and 90db SPL (if others are at 80db SPL) and in this case I would assume that all speakers are calibrated at the same SPL? please correct me if am wrong. Its glad to hear that the setup is tested in cinema hall that gives more confidence in the routing. At what level was the room calibrated in the case of your first film when the volume was low? may be that can help us is fixing the issues? Also, did you use a DCP format for testing? and the cinema was a 5.1 or with more channels (just wanted to check any chance of down/up mixing happened)?

    I'm not entirely sure, but there might be a problem if using 5.1 SYSTEM, because the software that manages outputs for the SYSTEM does the routing automatically and might not understand what you want from it. My logic says that you need ASIO compatible audio interface to do the proper routing.

Keep in mind that if you use processing on master track, you should render the master track and then separate the output file to discreet channels manually by importing the file into Reaper again and rendering each channel individually or just duplicating the track five times, choosing different channel on each track, gluing it and copying them all from your projects audio folder.

    At 11:50、you don't need to duplicate reaEQ to get over 24 db/octave lowpass or highpass filter。 Reaper comes with a build in JS 12 pole filter that lets you specify the frequency/resonance/db per octave for both low pass and high pass。 In FX browser look for:" JS: Apple 12-Pole Filter [Liteon/applefilter72db] "。 I promise this plugin will make things easier。 ツ Also question about rendering、how would you render more than 8 channel audio for stuff like 9.1/11.1?

    Great tip on 12-Pole Filter. An to render more than 8 channels you just prepare more stems and then select them before rendering: 9.1, 11.1 or whatever.1. The idea is to have as many discrete channels as you need. Discrete - because that's the way DCP preparation software works (or worked at the time I was doing this tutorial).

    Hey, sorry I'm so late. You may have already figured this out, but to answer your question about 9.1/11.1 - as long as you render out stems you can output as many discrete channels as you want. If I got the question correctly I talk about rendering out stems @ 8:55. Was that your question? Oh, and thanks for JS 12-pole filter tip. Once you figur out the way to not get ringing resonance you're good to go.

    No way. I'm avoiding third party stuff in my everyday life. Also since this is the one and only tut on serious surround in Reaper on YT, everyone should support me on Patreon just because I didn't record my voice while underwater. Happy New Year! P.S.: this video was uploaded in 2015. RX wasn't invented yet. And mouth noises were HOT back in the day.
