Audio Mixing for Film

Спорт

In this video I will discuss how to mix sound for film. For the demonstration, I will be using a segment from my film THE ARTIFACT. I have chosen a segment that has vocals of two actors (speaking parts) music and some additional sound design components (foot steps). The link to the trailer for the film is below:

I do need to apologize for low fidelity sound quality. Unfortunately, most of screen recording software applications are not optimized for working with professional sound gear. Hence, a compromise was made when routing audio from the interface to the screen recording software.
Below is a list of gear and software used for the tutorial
Windows 10 (PC)
Presonus Studio One (V3)
RME fireface audio interface
Waves plugins
MeldaProductions mixing plug ins
Nomad Factory plugins
The Glue Bus compressor
Please comment and I would love to keep the conversation goign about mixing sound for film and video production.

Good stuff! Please can you help How do run the process of importing from video then audio files then to syncing audio to video? It there a quick way especially for the audio syncing in studio one or you just have to go through it manually?? This is urgent I hope you see you asap 🙏

Hi, sorry for late reply. I don't know of any quick way of synching. Essentially, I do audio mix last so that everything is synched up from start to end of video. I then import stems into the DAW project and they match up. Hope this helps

Thanks for the video! Are you working with AAF? I thought to work in studio one, when I imported AAF from the Avid media composer, the audio files were mixed and did not fit on the timeline correctly, only the pro tools opened normally, what experience do you have and how do you export from the video program? Thank you!

Hi Evganiy, thank you for your question. I do not use AAF files, I convert everything from Adobe Premiere to WAV, and that seems to work for me fine. Given that AAF and WAV files are of the same quality, I suggest you try to convert your files to WAV and see if that fits your productions needs. Strangely, these audio production and video production programs do not always synchronize and problems may arise when moving files from one to another. I had similar issue when I was moving converted sequences from Adobe Premiere to Davinci. Once again, you just have to try different options. Good luck.

@@ralphklisiewicz1 AFFs are better. With wave files you do not have the freedom to stretch audio clips if your editor cut them to fit the video clip length Editors who don't do sound mixing wont know how to send waves

Hi A313, I have used Audition only few times and it felt like a real DAW. So I think if you comfortable with audition use that. I believe any profesional DAW will be well suited for mixing. I have been using Studio one since its conception so I feel comfortable with its interface. I only suggest to avoid mixing audio in a video editing software like Adobe premiere pro (which btw I use for video editing) because it's not build for it. For example, any DAW will allow you to create busses where you can send groups of tracks and mix them together. Hope that helps.

I am a Congolese sound (film) engineer, from the DRC Kinshasa. I have a very specific question, on "how to import AAF files into Fl studio.?" to prepare the mixing session dialogue & sound fx and background music of the film... person I use prools I don't know much about this software, yet I still feel comfortable using Fl studio because I know a lot of tricks about operating the software (fl_studio), I would like know how to import AAF (film sound timeline) sound files. Thank you very much, I'm still waiting for an answer on the channel

In your la3a compression example there is no gain reduction happening and the needle is not moving whatsoever...therefore no compression. Please clarify.

Hi Alex, thank you for a very good question. First let's start by looking at the source of the audio in the mix. We have a recording of the female actor. When I solo that track and turn off all effects I noticed that her voice is very low on volume and stays consistently at around -30db as she speaks. A compressor controls dynamics by either reducing volume that peaks high or bringing up volume that is too low. The gain reduction (GR) on the VU display is the rate at which this reduction/or increase occurs. Given that the original source stays essentially same level, the compressors is not controlling the dynamics from the top or the bottom. However, the compressor is increasing the make up again to make the overall source of audio louder. When I soloed the track and turned the CLA3A back on, I noticed a steady increase of about 12db of audio. What makes it confusing about CLA3A is that you have only two knobs of "Gain" and "peak reduction". "Gain" is likely the make up gain and "peak reduction" is a combination of threshold and ratio. So in the case of this track control of dynamics was not necessary, only increasing in the overall volume of the audio source. I tried to move the "peak reduction" all the way to 10 and the needle began to move a bit, especially when the male actors cuts in by saying " are we time traveling?". However, I was loosing some of the tiny peaks in voice that I wanted to maintain while mixing this project. Remember that these tiny peaks in vocal dynamics are useful later in the side chain on the music bus compressor and help duck the music. I hope this clarifies your concern. Once gain, thank you for your question.

Yes, Audition is a DAW. I personally found it cumbersome when compared to using Studio One Digital Audio Workstation for audio mixing. However, if you are comfortable with Audition, then stick to it, it is much better choice than mixing audio within Adobe Premiere Pro. I did use Adobe Audition for their noice reduction plug in for a while. I eventually invested in the Wave's noise remover that worked better for me within in Studio One.

Hi Darshan, thank you your comment. The DAW (digital audio workstation) software that I use here, and have been for many years now, is Presonus Studio One. However, any DAW will essentially work the same for you. Some DAWs are known to have really good native plugins, Studio One does not. However, I rely on 3rd party plug-ins anyway so the quality of the native plugins is non issue for me. In the description I have listed the plugins I have used. The quality of plugins is the key here, especially compressors that make your sound louder. Cheap compressors will give you a harsh sound. On the other hand the choice of DAW is really irrelevant on the quality of the final sound. I hope this helps. thanks.
