Yes exactly! And it’s clearly a spoof made by people who love the source material. That’s why it’s called the best non Star Trek Star Trek film by Trekkers themselves.

The Star Trek actors are based more on the original Star Trek from the late 1960s. First diverse cast on television. The communications officer for example was a black woman actor (Nichelle Nichols) who was stuck in a mini skirt and overly sexualized and was going to quit until Martin Luther King Jr., the Civil Rights leader, and convinced her to stay as a good example for children to emulate. After the show ended around 1970 she became a spokeswoman for the space agency NASA for years recruiting women and other groups for space exploration. George Takei is still alive and active on social media. William Shatner, the captain, as well and Walter Koenig who played a Russian in a bold statement for the 1960s that that political differences would have gone away by the time of space exploration. The Comicon expos were started after the original Star Trek ended. It was not a normal practice before that.

It wasn't a spoof. It was an homage. A love letter to the original series, and to the fans. They could have easily been mean-spirited with it (in fact, some Trek actors didn't want to see the film at first because that's what they thought this was), but instead they gave the film heart. Basically, "thank you all for being geeks; without you we wouldn't have a job." When the film was marketed, there used to be a website the producers put up that basically looked like a badly-done obsessed fan's website, the kind you'd see on sites like Geocities. It was so hilariously bad, when I was a web developer I used to use it as an example of how not to design a website, because every conceivable trope of bad website design was there.

Some Galaxy Quest trivia: ----- Jonathan Frakes: It was, I mean, some of the stuff in it is so on the nose and so accurate, and perfect, and funny. And Rickman. Rickman with the peeling makeup. Stuff that LeVar's character does. I mean, it's a favorite. I don't know why that sequels never been made. I gather it's encumbered with a lot of people who need money before they even shot, but this seems rife for a remake. Patrick Stewart: I had originally not wanted to see Galaxy Quest because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek, and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said "You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre." And I did, and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No-one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans. Tim Russ: I've had flashbacks of Galaxy Quest at the many conventions I've gone to since the movie came out. I thought it was an absolute laugh-a-minute. Wil Wheaton: I loved Galaxy Quest. I thought it was brilliant satire, not only of Trek, but of fandom in general. The only thing I wish they had done was cast me in it, and have me play a freaky fanboy who keeps screaming at the actor who played "the kid" about how awful it was that there was a kid on the spaceship. Alas. Awesome, Dear Boy: Although Alan Rickman hated sci-fi as a genre, he could not resist taking part in this film as he found the material very funny. Tim Allen, on the other hand, was a lifelong fan of science fiction and collector of memorabilia. He even stated that his dream was to command a starship. -----

I saw on the documentary that when they were in the shuttle, Allen tried arguing they should be doing environment checks before leaving the shuttle. "I mean is there air out there? They don't know." The director was like, naw it's fine do the take again. That's when Rockwell ad libbed his line addressing Allen's concerns. That made the line for me.

Jason Nesmith's flare up against his fans I believe is supposed to mirror William Shatner's irritation with the most "dedicated" of Trekkies back during the early days of conventions. On SNL's run in the 80's, Shatner hosted and "took a swipe at fans asking questions about episodes and minutia that he deemed far too geeky/nerdy" in a particular skit that fans did not find funny at all. He has fully embraced Star Trek and his place in that universe, but fans can be way too obsessive about their shows. So I can easily sympathize with actors wanting to separate themselves from certain roles and being resentful when they're unable to.

Aside from the obvious appearances of Rainn Wilson(Lahnk) & Sam Lloyd (Neru) from The Office and Scrubs respectively, we had Kevin McDonald (fan announcer) from the popular Kids in the Hall comedy series. We also have Missi Pyle (Laliari) who's been in everything from Dodgeball, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Justin Long crops-up in films when I least expect it and he's always a welcome addition.

The closest I can think of to "something on Earth turns out to be real" is The Last Starfighter, where aliens are using video games on Earth to pick recruits, who have no idea the games are based on reality. More recently Future Man used a similar concept where a video game was used to recruit people for a time travelling war. But the actors become heroes trope goes back to Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, a plot which was copied for A Bug's life, Three Amigos and Galaxy Quest - plus many many more. And if we expand the trope to include anyone who is mistaken for a hero then the list of films goes on and on, the most famous being the film starring Dustin Hoffman - (Accidental) Hero.

I can never pass up a reaction to this movie, it is perfect and so much fun. You did a great job and I enjoyed your reactions and commentary. Good move to pause the movie so that you don't miss anything. This was most specifically tailored around Star Trek. The Commander and the Doctor were reflections of Kirk and Spock, and they real life relationship was similar to that of Shatner and Nimoy. Indeed, the bit about the star's ego keeping him separate and above the rest of the crew, losing his shirt, tumbling, etc. were all direct references. The child driving the ship was a reference to Wesley Crusher in ST-The Next Generation, and your observations about the aftermath of a childhood career were pretty good. I would imagine that being a Trekkie from way back, as I am, would make this about 5X more fun. This is both parody and homage to the shows and the fans, and it does the job spectacularly. You really got it!

This movie was actually the reason I steered clear of conventions for over 10 years! I didn’t like the idea of meeting an actor who didn’t really want to be there, was only doing it for the money, and might think of me as a ‘crazy fan’ they are forced to take a photo with. However, then I discovered the Supernatural fandom, and now I’ve been attending cons regularly for 10 years. The Supernatural cast are absolutely lovely and it’s obvious they genuinely enjoy meeting the fans and attending conventions. I’ve had some awesome interactions with Jensen Ackles in particular (including him telling me my job was awesome, and giving me a high-five when I told him his Twitter profile pic was a photo I'd taken of him). I never had the courage to attend any Buffy/Angel/Whedonverse cons back in the day, but I’m finally getting the chance to meet some of the cast members this year. So far, I’ve met Amber Benson (Tara), DB Woodside (Principal Wood), Jewel Staite (Firefly), Felicia Day (Vi in S7), Tahmoh Penikett (Dollhouse), Keith Szarabajka (Holtz) and Amy Acker (on Zoom at a virtual con during Covid), and later this year, I’ll be meeting David Boreanaz and Charisma Carpenter in Germany, and Amber Benson (again), Mercedes McNab, Harry Groener and Christian Kane in the UK (I've been to a couple of Christian's gigs, but haven't actually met him yet) :).

I have met David Tennant three times, now. Twice at conventions and once at the stage door. According to Wizard World he was their most popular guest "by far" and his lines were incredibly long and moved FAST. But he was sweet and affable and was game for whatever people wanted for the photo ops. When he was in San Antonio, they way overbooked and he stayed at the autograph table rather than doing the Doctor Who panel (Billie Piper ended up doing it by herself, as John Barrowman's plane was late) and then he (and Barrowman) stayed after the event closed utnil; all the autographs were signed. They ended up hiring a charter plane to get David where he needed to be the next day. I met Catherine Tate, John Barrowman, Scott Bakula, and all of whom were also very nice. Barrowman was very racy and always sings at his panels. Those were the biggest names.

I have been to a lot of cons and met a lot of celebrities, and I gotta say that 99% of the time they have been very gracious. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I think they really do try their best to at least appear to be kind. I think you would appreciate that I have met Amber Benson (Tara), Nicholas Brendan (Xander), Clare Kramer (Glory), James C. Leary (Clem), James Marsters (Spike) twice, Juliet Landau (Drusilla), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Mercedes McNab (Harmony), Eliza Dushku (Faith), Doug Jones (played one of the Gentlemen but that's not what he's known for), Emma Caulfield (Anya), Felicia Day (played a Potential in season 7, but again, not what she's really known for) twice, J. August Richards (Gunn), Summer Glau (River/ballet dancer in Angel ep "Waiting in the Wings"), Sean Maher (Simon), and Adam Baldwin (Jayne). In regards to a movie like this (one of my all time faves) I have met Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Levar Burton, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Wil Wheaton, and William Shatner. And I have met others as well, and I gotta say, with maybe just a couple of exceptions, they were all very gracious, if not flat out super interactive.

Great story, in the scene where the villian makes Tim Allens character "Explain to him as you would a child" to Mathesar. and the look of complete betrayal that was so brilliantly acted out so brilliantly by Enrico Colontoni, Tim Allen told the director that he had to step away for a bit because he didn't like the way the scene was making him feel. To which Alan Rickman retorted "I think he's just experienced acting"

The main alien was played by Enrico Colantoni (Just Shoot Me, Veronica Mars, Person of Interest, Flashpoint). He came up with most of the mannerisms and speaking style for the aliens - some in the audition. The cast is incredible. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Allen Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell and Justin Long (his film debut) Personally, I don’t think there is a thing I would change about the movie. Many of the Star Trek actors have said they loved it although William Shatner said he was confused about who Tim Allen was trying to portray (very tongue in cheek comment)

As he was already in his 90's it was important to get it for many reasons before he passed on! I thanked him for his creation of the MU, nice gentleman, smiled and thanked me, shook his hand and had my arm around him as he was sitting on a chair. Worked on a ride at a top 25 amusement park not in Florida or California a long long time ago. Had a hall of fame football coach with his grandkids, and then a couple of very famous star male actors come through on different days. And again, this was a long time ago, but nobody bothered them, though they were clearly identifiable. Stayed super polite, and ride crew pushed like 1400-1500 people an hour through the ride. And each celebrity seemed absolutely grinning and smiling that we all treated them politely and just like any other rider. We made eye contact with riders so when we spoke to them about the ride, they knew we were serious about the process. Sometimes it is a "fake smile", but if a ride employee was upset or having a bad day, dozens or more would sincerely ask them if they were okay. I believe it was the eye contact. And because of safety we did not dare to go much into automatic pilot.

It's a serious, tense sci-fi film, and he is the only actor that appears in the film (except for a computer voiced by Kevin Spacey, and some very brief roles by 3 or 4 others, mostly recorded bits that he doesn't interact with). He basically carries the entire film.

ok, story from a Comicon. A few years back I was at the Phoenix Comicon here in Phoenix, AZ. I went to the room where all the celebrities were signing photos, and yes, there was a charge for this. I didn't have any extra cash, but I waited in a few lines anyway just to shake some hands and such. I met George Takei, incredible guy, and Robert Duncan Macneil, so down to earth. But the best one was when I met Adam Baldwin. I explained to him that I didn't have the money for the picture but I wanted to shake his hand thank him for all his outstanding rolls from Next of Kin to Chuck 2.0 to Firefly. Now, at the time, I had my son with me, whose was also Adam, and he was special needs and in his wheelchair. Mr. Baldwin asked if he could give my son a photo and then gave him a hug. It was the sweetest and coolest thing.

I started weightlifting when I was 15. It is a choice I have made for life. I got up to a 405 lb bench, 585 squat, and 615 deadlift. Two of my idols were Arnold and Louie. I took my daughter to the Austin Comic Con in 2012 and Lou was there. I got too star struck and didn't go and meet him, but it was cool just to see him. He was about 10 feet away from me. I've seen some other famous people over the years as well. One day, I was walking through the Tampa, FL airport and was on the phone with a friend. Suddenly, a chest went by my face. Now, I'm 6' 1" tall, so you have to be really tall for your chest to be at my face level. I looked up and it looked like it might be Hulk Hogan. I went around the corner and it was him. He was posing for some people in the gate area. He was going on the same flight that I was. This wasn't too long after 9/11 and they were doing random inspection checks of people at the gate right before getting on the plane and they picked Hulk for the inspection. He was standing there with his hands up. It was kind of ridiculous. I had gotten an upgrade to first class, and it turned out that I was sitting right behind Hulk. Again, I didn't bother him... and I noticed the guy sitting next to him was just talking his ear off. When the plane landed and the bell went off, everybody got up out of their seats, including Hulk. He was in my way for getting my bag... which is ok, I'm not really in any rush. He noticed that I wanted to get my bag and he moved out of the way... so I said thanks. Then, in the deepest voice that could kick your ass that you can imagine... he said, "Sure."

It wasn’t a convention, but I did meet a celebrity at Disneyland. It was Thelma Hopkins from Tony Orlando and Dawn, Bosom Buddies, Family Matters and more. I just loved her. She was there with her boyfriend just having fun. I was only 11 and scared to go over to her but I did. When I asked for an autograph her boyfriend reached for the pen and paper. I yanked it away and said not YOU, HER! She laughed and he just offered to take the picture. It turns out, her boyfriend played for the LA Dodgers, she hadn’t been in anything for a while so he must have assumed I wanted his autograph. I didn’t figure that out until I was in my 30’s. In hindsight, I think it kind of made her day. Just thinking back to how much she laughed about it. Anyway, still have the photo and autograph on a Disneyland bag framed at home. I think Thelma was my earliest favorite actress.

I have identical twin nieces who met the "Weasley twins" from Harry Potter at one of the conventions and were nice enough to take a piecture with them - so two sets of identical twins. At another convention they got George Takei to sign his picture to my mom (their grandma) who'd just turned 101 and was a big Star Trek fan. They said he was really nice about it and happy to do it.

The men's room scene is supposedly based on William Shatner overhearing negative comments about himself and the cast at a convention. 16:09 Watch Sigourney Weaver as Sam Rockwell screams. Rockwell ad-libbed the scream and her startled reaction is real. 44:55 "Guy Fleegman" is a shout-out to Guy Vardaman, a long-time stand-in and extra on "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Vardaman didn't know about it until he saw the film in the theatre. Patrick Stewart on Galaxy Quest: "I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

So, Tim Allen (Jason Nesmith) is doing William Shatner, who is legendary for his ego. Few of his Star Trek cast members liked him or could even tolerate him. Alan Rickman (Alexander Dane) is doing Leonard Nimoy, who functioned under prosthetics, was a serious actor, and initially felt typecast and held back by his Spock character (he eventually came to understand what he meant to fans, just like Dane at Quellek's death) and eventually treasured his place in history. Sigourney Weaver (Gwen DiMarco) is doing a combination of Seven of Nine and Uhura, especially as Seven was 'poured' into her costume and Uhura initially was mainly a telephone operator for the Enterprise before her role and Federation career was expanded. Daryll Mitchell (Tommy Webber) was the genius Wesley Crusher character portrayed by Wil Wheaton. Tony Shalhoub (Fred Kwan) was an amalgam of all the ship's engineers and bridge officers, including an Irishman playing a Scot (Fred Kwan had to squint to look as Asian as his acting name and show character) and a Japanese trying to avoid cultural typecasting. Sam Rockwell (Guy) represented all those Red Shirt extras who died during away-missions and ship-invasions. This was so obviously a loving send-up of Star Trek (Star/Galaxy Trek/Quest) which presented barely obscured characters in and out of show roles and did so with humor and respect. Even Star Trek luminaries loved this film. Interesting Fact: The concern about the Omega 13 having the capability of annihilating all matter in the universe has a precedent. When developing nuclear weaponry during WWII, there was this same concern that splitting the atom would set off a chain reaction causing all matter in the universe to disintegrate. To answer your question about true-life interactions with famous people at conventions: I attended a SF Con a few months after birthing my first child, carrying him around in a child seat. Come mealtime, the six of us (counting the baby) found a large round table to seat at and order our meal. My son was sleeping at that point, so I had him under the table by my chair. Samuel L ("Chip") Delaney (famous science fiction novelist, there to sign autographs and appear on panels) came by the table to comment on us, saying that my baby in his carrier put him in mind of when his own daughter was a baby, and that he used to order spareribs and hand her the bones to gnaw on under the table. Then he informed us he was picking up our lunch tab! At the same convention, I went along, baby again in tow in his carrier, to attend a writer's panel. L Sprague de Camp was one of the writers. I ended up stepping over a woman's legs as I found my seat, and the woman was so very pleased to see my baby, cooing at him and checking him out. After the panel talk was over, L Sprague De Camp (a founding luminary in science fiction writing since at least the 1950s) came down and joined the woman who was so enchanted by my son, also finding himself charmed by my baby. It turns out the woman was his wife, Catherine Crook de Camp, who was a well-known science fiction writer in her own right. I have to mention Isaac Asimov, who was also there that year. He didn't attend that many SF conventions because he didn't fly; he could not handle so much speed and height on the other side of a thin metal airplane skin, so he only went to ones he could drive to or take a train. I stood at his side while he talked to his fans, and I have to say he was a TERRIBLE male chauvinist... But here's the thing: his intelligence was so stunning that I was enthralled in spite of my feminism. It's like a magical power. And in spite of his horrible cultural views, he was sweet and generous with his fans.

At various San Diego Comicons I have met Richard Hatch (Apollo), Herb Jefferson Jr (Boomer), Anne Lockhart (Sheba) and Jack Stauffer (Bojay) of the Original Battlestar Galactica cast. I also got to meet Patricia Tallman (Lyta), Robin Aitken Downs (Byron) and Jason Carter (Marcus) of Babylon 5. Also Adam West (Batman) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman) and Yvonne Craig (Batgirl). But the most surprising one to meet was Alexandra Tidings (Aphrodite) from the Hercules/Xena TV shows. As there was no one behind me I got to talk to her for some time and she was a real sweetheart! 😊 You might be thinking of The Last Starfighter...it starts off as just a video game...only to find out it is a recruitment tool for aliens to find fighter pilots for their war against Zur and the Kodan armada...lol 😅

Movies with similar premises would include Tropic Thunder, Last Starfighter, Stranger than Fiction and Three Amigos, all of which are mentioned by other commenters well before I wrote this. The most similar to Galaxy Quest would be the Three Amigos, which I would describe as the bastard child of The Magnificent Seven and Galaxy Quest.

I used to be friends with those who were involved in creating the conventions back in the seventies in Hollywood, California, in the USA. They were called Sci-Fi Conventions. Through being around them, I was able to meet a few different people. They were still in the beginning stages of being even known about so there were far less people there. We went before Star Wars came out and we all went to the premiere of it May 25th, 1977, at the Graumanns Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Stood in line 4 hours to get in but boy what a rush. No one had ever seen anything like it. George Lucas created a whole new way of doing special effects.

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make.;) Sigoruney Weaver said that she could feel her IQ going down when she wore the Blonde wig. But she began to wear it off set...all the way home. I've never been to a fan convention, either due to work schedule or not having disposable income at the time. ( I was a film photographer rather than a TV/movie fan. W. Eugene Smith mattered more to me than William Shatner.) Consider these two Stephen King tales: "Stand By Me" (1986) and "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) for a change, if you haven't already seen them. Speaking of other 1999 movies, "The Iron Giant" and "October Sky" take you into the reality of the Cold War and Sputnik in 1957.

Never been to a con but did go to a few book signings. Met and interacted with a few local (Brazilian) celebrities in random situations (parties, film festivals) and a long time ago as a reporter when I was still pursuing a career in journalism. Because the situations were either professional or social, there wasn't that pressure to please fans, so all interactions were pretty normal and respectful. Some more chatty, some a bit more private.

I message a lot of reactors so I am not sure if I have posted this to you before and if I have, my apologies- Movie recommendation, if you haven't seen True Romance, I highly recommend it. Some other potentially obscure movies of greatness. After Hours, directed by Martin Scorsese, his only comedy to my knowledge. Also, Most of Brian De Palma's earlier movies- Body Double, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out- Oh, and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and Midnight Express and A Thin Red Line, which came out at the same time as Saving Private Ryan, so ended up being mostly overlooked, but the cinematography is fantastic- Most of these are probably rated R, so not sure how that works out with youtube reactions, but, hopefully I have suggested something you haven't seen, that piques your interest.

I wish I could go to a convention. Just once it would be nice to have a place to geek out, get to meet a couple of celebrities I have always wanted to meet and maybe make a new friend. I love this movie though. I am not a big Tim Allen fan, but the rest of the cast is steller. The debuts of Justin Long and Rain Wilson, then adding in Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell and everyone else who was a part of it. It was a love letter to nerds everywhere, and while being parody of Star Trek, it was an homage as well. It never insulted people for being fans or for being on a sci-fi show. Seeing the character arches and how it brought them back together at the end after spending years divided and hating each other, it did what unfortunately never happened for the original Star Trek cast. Most of the original cast couldn't stand William Shatner at the end. They did the movies because of the money, but they couldn't stand Shatner. If you look closely in a couple of the Trek movies with the original cast, when Shatner is up close and they are in the background, they are giving the dirtiest looks towards him like they want to take the computer apart and bash Shatner in the head with it. It isn't easy to notice because they are trying to remain professional. You can tell the chemistry had gone way downhill though. There is talk of a Galaxy Quest tv show. I have no idea how it would work without Alan Rickman. I am sure that it would be possible to get most of the rest of the cast back for it though. I just think they would have to probably go with different people in some of the roles. Probably could get Tony Shaloub back easy enough. I am not sure on anyone else. One would hope Sam Rockwell came back. I doubt they would get Sigourney Weaver though. Not sure if Rain Wilson or Justin Long would need to be there or not.

A recent use of this device is "AFK: The Webseries" out of NZ in 2015. You might have been thinking of "The Matrix".
