Big up, Elie! Anyway, I think doubting everyone's motives sort of does tie in to the sense of Carrie's paranoia the director was going for. After the blood gets dumped on Carrie, only the girl in the red cap is laughing at her while everyone else is stunned. But, when we are shown Carrie's point of view, we see everyone including Miss Collins pointing and laughing at her like she feared.

That's because they're not really paying attention to the movie and they just pause the movie, talk and make comments instead of paying close attention to the nuance and body language and the intent of Sue and Tommy.

They were clearly not in on it. But Stephen King wanted to clear things up like bullying has its consequences to everybody even the people who were good to Carrie will forever be affected by it. Even Sue who clearly had good intentions for Carrie. It will forever be etched in their memory and that Carrie will be haunting them for the rest of their lives.

Also, just wanted to draw attention to the extraordinary single-take shot at the dance that literally shows off everyone at the dance and reveals what is happening in one continuous take. It starts on Tommy and Carrie at their table, follows the ballots as they are collected and switched out, shows the school staff being given the fake ballots, passes the stage and shows Chris and Billy under the stage, moves behind the stage to show Sue entering the gym and then follows the rope up above the stage and coming to rest on the bucket of blood (but it’s not done yet!) and then zooms focus across the entire gym back to Tommy and Carrie at their table again as their names are announced. It took a full day to film. De Palma is a master.

The remake did not do it justice at all IMO. Chloë Grace Moretz is so conventionally pretty that she isn't believable as Carrie at all. And they totally botched the prom scene and had Carrie slickly tossing things around the room with her power like she's a superhero. That's totally not who the character is.

The actress playing Carrie is Golden Globe and Academy Award winner, Sissy Spacek. This was her debut and she was nominated for the Oscar for best actress for this role, but lost to Faye Dunway. Amy Irving (Sue Snell) and Priscilla Pointer (Sue’s mother) are real life mother and daughter. When filming the end scene when Sue wakes up from her dream and starts screaming, Priscilla became so panicked by Amy’s screaming that she really started calling “AMY?!, AMY!!”. The scene was too good to Brian DePalma to retake, so they added music to drown out her calling her “Amy” instead of “Sue”.

The good news is Sissy Spacek wasn’t abused by the director in order to bring out her amazing performance. To create her own world, however, she did tell the other actors in the film she was going to isolate herself early on. She wouldn’t socialize with them in between scenes, in order to feel that sense of sadness and alienation that the character felt.

Sue and Tommy were the movie heroes, as was Ms. Collins. Their concern and altruism toward Carrie are genuine. That's Amy Irving as Sue. She was Steven Spielberg's first wife and a popular actress in the 70's. You might want to check out another creepy movie she was in, "The Fury." She had the psychic powers in that one. Also, William Katt as Tommy. He played the "Greatest American Hero." It was a semi-popular series in the 70's, but its theme song was a big hit.

Carrie has been my favourite story for nearly ten years, so I'm happy to provide some extra insight :P Carrie isn't meant to be devilish, she's actually an avenging angel. Carrie had telepathy and visions in the book, and during the destruction she thinks: "There was something she was supposed to do. Something about roadhouses...parking lots...and an angel with a sword. The fiery sword." I'm also religious, and I see the story as a warning about what can happen when you take scripture out of context for selfish reasons. Margaret isn't a true Christian, she's an abusive psychopath using religion to control her daughter. Stephen King said that he has good win over evil in most of his stories, and that good "drew a tie" in Carrie, saying he views Carrie as good. The draw being that Carrie ultimately died in the end. Carrie was based on two bullied girls Stephen King grew up with, who both died young. Carrie's mother was raised in a normal household, but suffered from untreated mental illnesses caused by the trauma of her father being killed in a roadhouse shootout. Furthermore, she was sexually assaulted by her husband, and because her body reacted with physical pleasure, she thought she had committed a sin and that Carrie was her punishment. This actually happened twice, but the first rape resulted in a miscarriage, further traumatising her. People say that only Norma was laughing, but if you rewatch the scene, almost everyone was laughing because you can see them when it cuts from Carrie's POV. She only imagined Miss Collins and Tommy's two friends laughing, but that could even be her seeing into their minds and seeing them mentally laughing at her, which happened in the book with Miss Collins (who is called Miss Desjardin in the book.) Billy and Chris were much worse in the book. Chris once put a firecracker in a girls shoe and blew off her big toe, all because Chris thought she looked ugly. Billy was basically a future serial killer who ran over stray dogs for fun. Stephen King said that the story is also metaphorical for female empowerment - Carrie is shamed and repressed for her period, but it's her period that gives her the power to fight back against a bigoted society, considering that it was the trigger for her powers to emerge. The destruction is meant to be a metaphor for dismantling a society that harms women, particularly teenage girls. There's a sequel to this movie called "The Rage: Carrie 2" which shows what Sue is up to around 20 years later. It follows another telekinetic high schooler, but the plot is different enough to be enjoyable. I actually HIGHLY recommend the remakes. There are two - a TV Pilot from 2002 for a series that was never made, and the 2013 movie. I also recommend you read the book. I think you'll particularly enjoy the 2002 movie because, despite it being far less cinematic, it portrays Christianity in a pretty positive light, showing that Carrie was a true Christian who understood that being Christlike was about love, not hate and control. Side note - Carrie White and Willow Rosenberg would be best friends. I also think her and Buffy are quite similar, considering they both burned down a gymnasium full of demons. Did I say that last part out loud?

  • @judson9223
    @judson9223 Жыл бұрын

Lol, apologise to Sue and Tommy right now! You doubted them the entire movie but they were indeed trying to do something nice for Carrie all along. The statue is of St Sebastian, not Jesus. But yes, it is rather symbolic that Margaret White died in the same position. The sad thing is, I'm sure many people can confirm that her character is not far fetched at all. There are many MANY parents who think that way and treat their children like that. Two horror trivia points: The actress who played the girl in the red baseball cap also played Lynda in Halloween. And you now understand Billy Loomis' quote from Scream ("Corn syrup. The same stuff they used for pig's blood in Carrie").

Tommy and Sue were NEVER in on the prank at the prom. Tommy actually cared for Carrie. The prom scene between Carrie and Tommy is one of the sweetest moments captured in film. Her first dance; her first date; her first KISS--all thanks to Tommy and Sue. When Tommy was struck in the head by the bucket and Carrie realized he was dead, that is when she lost her mind. In the novel not only did she seal the gym and burn everyone to death, but she destroyed most of the town! Also, the statue in Carrie's prayer closet was of St. Sebastian, not Jesus.

GREAT reaction to this absolute classic film! Brian De Palma was at a creative peak in the 1970’s and early ‘80’s. He loved Hitchcock and paid homage to him in all his films. I highly recommend you check out some of his other films of the era, like “Dressed to Kill” and especially “Blow Out” which I think is his best and reunites stars John Travolta and Nancy Allen (Chris) from “Carrie” in very different roles that really show off their acting abilities. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie got well-deserved Oscar nominations for their roles of Carrie and her mother. Sissy would win an Oscar 4 years later playing the country music star Loretta Lynn in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” another highly recommended film. Spacek has had a great career and is still going strong. One last recommendation is one of the first films Spacek ever did, called “Badlands,” costarring Martin Sheen and loosely based on a real case to two young spree killers in 1950’s America. It’s a true work of art and generally considered one of the great films of the 1970’s. Glad you finally realized Sue and Tommy were genuinely trying to be nice to Carrie. I always thought it was obvious. Sue never really hung out with Chris and actually told her to shut up during the detention on the track field and she was the only one who seemed remorseful when Miss Collins was berating the girls. And Tommy got pissed at the teacher who made fun of Carrie in class and told him “you suck.” Such a terrific film with so many emotional highs and lows and so well made.

the fact that Carrie is abused in such horrible ways by everyone from the bullies at the school to her mother to a freaking random kid on a bike makes you realize how cruel people actually can be to others. its a tragic story that shows how repulsive entitled people can be (Chris's unprovoked hatred), how disturbing someone can be when they take their beliefs too far (no offence intended), and how seemingly "innocent pranks" can have unimaginable consequences. even though this isn't a "fun" movie, it's my favorite from Stephen King because of the truths it rings and the warnings it gives.

I am laughing here as I watch your reaction to the high drama of the clash between Chris and Miss Collins. You kept the whole altercation scene in. It is one of the best parts of this whole film. There is a documentary on this film on KZread. The actresses discuss that scene. To even my own shock, I understand the director Required "Miss Collins" to in actual fact really slap "Chris." And it took several "takes" to get it just "right." Later on, when there is more slapping going on (for example between Chris & Billy), they were all fake "stage slaps," but of course with the sound effects put in later.

I'm late to the party. But Carrie was, first and foremost, a victim of her mother and her mother's obsession with religion. This is explored more in the book. Chris was the ringleader for the "prank" on Carrie, and she was also the biggest bully towards Carrie. Sue felt bad about how Carrie was treated, which is why she asked her boyfriend Tommy to ask her to the prom. Tommy genuinely liked Carrie and never meant her any harm. Carrie was more enraged that Tommy was killed than she was from the actual pig's blood poured on her, which is what prompted her to basically set the whole town to burn (The destruction is much worse in the book). If you haven't already, I suggest watching "The Green Mile" or "Shawshank Redemption" These are both very good adaptations.

Elie, I have to applaud your sophisticated understanding and commentary of the beginning locker room scene and panning filming and then sudden change which really sets up the whole tragedy of Carrie's shower, which finally brings her to the greatest shock of her life for which unfortunately she was not prepared. So many people negatively comment on what they observe as just purely improper, gratuitous gawking for men. Most people it seems are so childish about that full scene. It is very unfortunate. Again, your commentary is right on the mark of sophisticated insight and perception of Carrie's story.

This was very enjoyable to see, and your appreciation for cinema and its trappings is evident here. Carrie is a fascinating thriller and a really well made piece of movie-making. Its director Brian De Palma is always good. I love his movie Dressed to Kill which is a combo of slasher, psychological horror and sleuth story. The composer Pino Donaggio had made such a remarkable score for this, very much an homage to Hitchcock's Psycho themes but also with some very sweet and soft pieces as well. Kudos to him for this soundtrack. The entire bucket sequence (entitled "Bucket of Blood" on the soundtrack album) has such great music in it during that whole slow motion part of the movie. It's the perfect accompaniment for suspense. Piper Laurie is astonishing as Margaret. Every scene she is in seems fraught with tension. Her performance is wonderful. She hadn't done much acting at the time; she was involved in movies back in the 50s and 60s but never became a big film star. For her work in Carrie she got an Oscar nomination for Supporting actress, and Sissy Spacek got a nod for Best Actress. Since you mentioned Friday the 13th: The producer and writer of Friday the 13th added the climactic canoe scene with the Final Girl, Alice, especially because they wanted a big audience jump jolt like there had been in Carrie from four years earlier. It works. Trivia for that final scene in Carrie: Spacek insisted on being the person whose hand grabs actress Amy Irving (Sue Snell), so they let her get slightly buried with fake stones and things so that it would be her actual arm that is thrust up. Good for her. I like that kind of attitude ... she wanted authenticity. Also, when Sue walks down the lane carrying the flowers to the White's house, that was filmed with the actress walking backwards--- and it was played in reverse to look dream-like. The little boy on the bicycle taunting "Creepy Carrie, creepy Carrie!" was De Palma's nephew Cameron, and his dialogue was actually Betty Buckley's voice in post production. Brian De Palma apparently didn't like the kid's voice so he let Betty do the dubbing. Sorry to go on at length, but it's very cool to see someone's first experience with -Cassie- Carrie. Thanks! Regards from America.

Love your channel and your insight into film making. May I share a unique experience here regarding this movie? I saw a viewing of it in San Francisco's historic Castro Theater some 20 years ago. For context, the theater is in the heart of San Francisco's gay scene. The event featured Piper Laurie (Carrie's mom) in person, who gave background and shared the viewing experience. The audience may have come expecting "high camp" - but in fact the mood of the audience tuned into the subtle performances (of Spacek in particular). For anyone who has felt "othered" or bullied, this movie comes across less as a horror and more of a tragedy. Sissy Spacek, fyi, went on to give an oscar winning performance in her portrayal of country music star, Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter". I highly recommend watching that!

The hand out of the grave is the best jump scare ever in Horror Films. Stephen King is a brilliant writer, so many great films to his name. Brian De Palma directed this one, he done some brilliant films in the 70's and 80s. The bullying and torment of Carrie can be hard to watch, especially the shower scene. The Pigs blood in the Prom scene of course was used and referenced in Scream. When Carrie does snap we get a strange satisfaction of revenge on her tormentors. A superb adaptation of this story. Elie man you gotta do his film Christine, directed by John Carpenter, and his best in my opinion is The Dead Zone directed by David Cronenberg. Two super Stephen King adaptations. Great reaction here man. There were some superb films made in the 70's of which this is definitely one. Some films should never be remade, this is one of them.

I'm glad you left in all of the confrontation at 14:11. The director demanded a Real Slap - not a fake sound timed with the action of slapping - and it required several "takes" to get it just the way he wanted. It is an astounding piece of information. John Travolta did not slap Chris during his encounters. He refused to do so. So, of course they used sound affects..

Carrie is a classic! Fun fact Betty Buckley who plays the gym teacher actually smacked actress Nancy Allen multiple times apparently Brian De Palma wanted Chris’s reaction to be as raw and genuine as possible so he asked Betty to smack her a bunch of times til he got the take he was pleased with. They could of did a fake slap but Brian obviously dint want that a little extreme in my personal opinion but that’s the joy of acting I suppose. Thankfully there was no hard feelings between Nancy Allen and Betty Buckley so that’s good she was obviously okay with it at the end of the day.

Interesting fact about the casting- George Lucas and Brian DePalma had joint auditions in the same room for Star Wars and Carrie. So Tommy (William Katt) was considered for the role of Luke Skywalker, didn’t get it but got the role of Tommy instead. Wanted to share that seeing that you’re a Star Wars fan from the memorabilia in your background:)

Most of the students weren't laughing. Only Chris and her core group knew what was going to happen. And they're the only ones laughing. You can see the girl with the red hat laugh, but the couple next to her are absolutely not. In fact, the girl was the one being nice to her when they entered the prom. There is a phenomena where high school seniors realize that they are almost adults and they try to act like them. Sue and Tommy were doing this. You can see the contrast early in the film. They cut between Chris and Billy out drinking to Sue and Tommy doing homework and watching an old western on TV. Yes, at the end, Carrie screamed and released the power, which destroyed the house. Originally, there was supposed to be stones falling on the house (you can still see a few in the shots). But they didn't show up well on film. Stones falling is a common teenage event for poltergeist activity (which is usually tied to a teen).

Yes, the book is very different and more violent possible SPOILERS for anyone wanting to read the book. The prom scene was different in fact Carrie wasn't even in the room, she was doing everything in front the doorway. Sue never made it to the school she got into a car accident on her way there. Carrie also was telepathic and could hear what people was saying about her and that includes the teachers who also bullied her. Carrie not only burned down the school she also burned down the entire town, Carrie kills her mother differently by giving her a heart attack, the story doesn't end at the house. There is backstory on Carrie's father and Grandmother. Carrie's Grandmother was pyrokinetic, both of Carrie's parents carried the telekinetic gene but it was dormant in them and didn't become active until she was born so she actually got it from them. The point of view was told by survivors at the school, neighbors, or people who came into contact with her that night. I'm sure there is more but that's all I can remember.

A classic film. So much in here to consider - with that said, it does feel dated to me compared to some other classic horrors, so I like the remake even if it is more “Hollywood” and misses some of the grit. There’s actually a 2002 remake as well, but that is quite low budget from what I remember. (A Carrie 2 as well, with the actress who played Sue reprising her role)

Remakes are always far worse than the originals of all films. Just remember this one as the finest made of the story. Your wild reaction to the final "jump-scare" of Sue waking up to the nightmare was fantastic! Ironically, Sue is the one character who will have to live with those nightmares for the rest of her life - having not been physically killed as all the others. And Sue was really trying to help Carrie out all along after realizing she was wrong for the throwing of the sanitary pads at Carrie when she first got caught up in the locker-room melee at the beginning. I have to make one more important comment adult commentary about the beginning setup of the film story at the beginning during the locker room "mucking about" as would be the case in any setting after field exercises and games at that time. You didn't become "upset" about the film panning of the inside of the locker room cleaning up and getting ready for the next day's classes after PE (physical education). Most all commentators say it was inappropriate viewing. Those comments are so utterly inappropriate, trifling, and childish. It is an excellent panning shot ending with Carrie all alone. I really want to commend you on your adult and sophisticated understanding of the excellent and necessary use of a situation that ends with Carrie's unexpected horror where she thinks she could be dying, and then she desperately asks for help.

There is a lot of history of the Carrie movies, the production, and the book. The Carrie series produced a film remake, a tv remake, a play, and a sequel with the original character Sue Snell returning in Carrie 2: The Rage. The statue is not Jesus but St. Sebastian. George Lucas was casting Star Wars and Brian DePalma Carrie at the same time so Amy Irving also read for Carrie and Princess Leia but she ended up in Brian’s next telekinesis film The Fury which is part of a series of John Farris books. Chris(Nancy Allen) would later marry/divorce DePalma but star in his his films Blow Out with John Travolta and Dressed to Kill with Angie Dickinson. In the film, the kid on the bike that falls is the nephew of the director Cameron DePalma. The woman who plays Sue’s mom is her real mom IRL. In the book, Carrie is fatter and has pimples too so not as attractive and wins by one vote. People do survive the prom including the gym teacher and others but she destroys some of the town and kills other people by letting her power loose. Sissy Spacek would win a Best Actress Oscar for Coal Miner’s Daughter by playing the late country singer Loretta Lynn. In the book, the power is hereditary as another female cousin has it too. In 2022 dollars, this grossed over 100 million dollars which the studios never expected being a horror film on such a low budget. Norma(red hat) actually was injured with the waterhose in the scene since it busted her eardrum. She also played in the original Halloween. Both the mom (after 25 years of not acting) and Sissy were nominated for Oscars which they lost. Piper Laurie followed this with her own horror film called RUBY ironically with all of Carrie’s colors of red. The book is very different since the government comes in for a “Carrie White” commission to understand what happened at the “Bates” Prom and town and interviewed the survivors. The changes in the new Carrie was technology, special effects plus people get out of prom. Some other minor changes too. The tv version comes closer to the book.

    1. Stephen King threw this book into the trash but his wife took it out and told him to publish it. It was his first book to be published outside pulp adult magazines and it was the first one adapted into a movie. The rest is history. 2. As long as I have a face Norma/P.J. Soles has a place to sit.💕😍 She has to ace the ballcap though 3. Back then teachers could strike the kid if necessary. 4. Her mother is a real piece of work. 5 Tommy and Sue were really trying to help her. I read the book. 6. Both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Oscars but lost. 7. Margaret is impaled in the same position as Carrie's St. Sabastian statue. 8. As usual with King remakes they all sucked.

While it is true that you mentioned how 'creepy' the scenes with Carrie's mom are, but you failed to mention that it was the actress, Piper Laurie (who, like Sissy Spacek--Carrie--got an Oscar Nomination for this role) did as good a job as did Sissy. Second thing the spinning camera while they danced was meant to make you feel as dizzy as Carrie felt experiencing these good things for the first time. Good job though.

Yes, this was based on Stephen King's very first book of the same name, published in 1974. And it was the very first film adaptation two years later. So early in his career, in fact, that not only did the trailer not vocalize his name, but spelled it S T E V E N instead of S T E P H E N. Some of the names have been changed, when others stayed the same. In the book, Norma Watson was actually an innocent and Chris's sidekick was actually Tina Blake. Billy was portrayed as a sociopath in the book, but on this movie, he's a simpleton who's putty in Chris's hands. The name of the school, in the book, is actually Ewen High School. It was renamed Bates High School, because Brian DePalma wanted to pay homage to Psycho, hence the violin stings. The gym teacher is called Miss Desjarden in the book, but Is called Miss Collins in the movie. In the he book, Miss Desjarden lives, but in the movie, Miss Collins dies. In the book, Carrie uses her telekinesis to stop her mom's heart, but in this movie, she crucifies Margaret the same way as the statue of St. Sebastian in the praying closet.

Sue did have good intentions, but like Miss Collins (the gym teacher) she had to suffer in the end, like Tommy. The film is not really anti-religious, just anti-fanatical. For instance, Margaret was married to Ralph and should’ve had a fulfilling sex life with her husband. Only in her mind did she believe everything was a sin, including marital relations and menstruation.
