Filling My Off Road Tires with WATER!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Most off road enthusiasts are familiar with airing down their tires, for traction and comfort on 4x4 trails, and of course airing them back up once you're ready to hit the pavement again. Jeep Wranglers, Ford Broncos, Toyota Land Cruisers...whatever your off road vehicle of choice is, airing down to proper tire pressure is something you ought to know about. For some extreme rock crawling rigs, though, filling your tires with air isn't the only option - adding water into your tires can improve how your rig performs on extreme rock obstacles. So of course we're gonna try it!

We didn’t think we needed to say this, but just to clarify - this is for low speed off road and extreme rock crawling application only. This is not something you should do to a rig that is driven on road or on highways. If you do, you’re gonna have a bad time. 😁🤙

Windshield washer fluid rated to -20-30 is the cheapest way to put non-freezing ballast into tires. Rimguard, beet juice, is heavier per volume but it's expensive. The worst part about liquid ballast filled tires is when you have to remove them for repairs. Your formerly manageable weight tire/wheel now weighs two or three times what it used to. Have fun taking it off and putting it back on.

tractors in southern Missouri use 50/50 methanol water and they don't have passenger style valve stems so there's a different tool for filling with fluid. and they aren't filled to a certain weight. they need to be filled to about the top of the wheel so the fluid stabilizes in the tire and isn't sloshing to and fro causing the vehicle to lurch.

This after losing many rear bead lock tires on the chain side, full throttle in 4th doing large clockwise turns on the homemade field track.. I needed to find more traction/ less bounce= less repairing wheels= more fun. Funny what we do to find our happy place.

Ya adding that much weight inside the tires is going to do a couple other things you don’t want. 1. Wheel balance issues 2. Steering effort will increase (acts like a gyro) 3. Increased braking and acceleration efforts (rob power). 4. Your driveline is not prepared to handled the extra twisting force (break axles) 5. The whiplash affect from stops 6. Whatever shocking tuning you did was a waste. Other than making weights on scales you significantly lost performance in all aspects of what it was designed to do. If you want to lower the front COG for crawling use hydraulics to drop the suspension height in the front or raise the rear. Hopefully the lugs don’t break.

  • @LiteBrite

I don’t think you realize this is just a rock crawling buggy. It doesn’t have any of the issues you stated above except for possibly breaking axles due to the increased weight and traction but that’s also where driver experience comes into play. This mod is not for anything that drives at highway speeds. The vehicle is purpose built for rock crawling at slow speeds like our last video.
