Filling a monster watercooling loop for PC with 3 radiators! Twin Core P5 gaming PC mod

Link: darwinpc.co.uk/build-complete-...
Project p5yche is complete. Thanks to Thermaltake and all the sponsors for inviting me to this competition and making this case mod possible. Project p5yche is a twin Core P5 mod featuring X99, Intel 5820K CPU, SLI ASUS GTX 980 STRIX and 32 GB AVEXIR Blitz memory. All cooled by three huge 480 mm radiators and 24 Riing fans from Thermaltake.
--------- FAQ ---------
- Why not put components in this order within a watercooling loop?
This is something that is oft-repeated, and on the face of it may seem logical. However, order of components makes very little difference to temperature of the coolant at any point in the loop, and therefore to individual component temperatures. The rate of flow in a watercooling loop is so high, that each part of the coolant has very little time to pick up little heat at the heat sources (CPU and GPU) and likewise to lose heat at the radiators. Overall this means there is at most a few °C difference at any point in the loop. In terms of numbers, a 300W GPU would raise the temperature of a litre of water by about 4.5ºC. If a typical loop has a flow rate of 4 litres/min, the coolant would increase by about 1.125ºC after the GPU.
The only important part of loop layout is that the reservoir is immediately before the pump. This is to remove air before coolant reaches the pump, preventing damage from the pump running dry.
- Why construct a serial watercooling loop and not parallel loops?
It is a common misconception that parallel loops perform better than a single, serial loop. Compared to a parallel loop, a serial loop allows the total radiator space to dissipate heat more efficiently, rather than for example having one radiator dissipating 300 watts from a GPU, while another dissipates only 75 watts from a CPU. A serial loop also removes the need for multiple pumps and reservoirs, and allows for a cleaner look, with less tubing.
- Why have two pumps in serial?
Having two pumps in serial gives a higher pressure in the loop, which is good for moving coolant around a large loop. Also, with two pumps in series, if one pump did fail, it would have redundancy so the loop would continue to flow. Having pumps in parallel would increase the flow rate, rather than the pressure, but with any decent pump, the flow rate is more than adequate already.
- Why keep one reservoir sealed while you fill a dual (serial) reservoir loop?
In a series loop, for filling it is simpler to seal the first reservoir by tightening the fill cap. This means only one reservoir needs to be filled as the coolant is moved into the loop by power cycling the pump(s). Once the loop is full of coolant, both fill caps are tightened, and coolant moves through the whole loop including both reservoirs.

    During filling the right hand reservoir is sealed (the cap at the top is tightened). I could only fill one reservoir at a time, as otherwise one would run empty before the other anyway.

    The build looks insanely cool! In your description, you mention a competition -- is that the reason for this overkill build? And is that also why you have two pumps, or is having both of them necessary for the amount of liquid to push through?

  • @DarwinPCmods

    @DarwinPCmods

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Yes, this was for the CaseMOD Invitational 2016 competition. The objective for me was to make a crazy build! For the two pumps, it was partly for looks - there was a lot of space to fill with the two cases stuck together. It also gives a higher pressure in the loop, which is good for such a large loop. Finally, with two pumps in series, if one pump did fail, it would have redundancy so the loop would continue to flow.

There's very littel info when it comes to 2 separate pump combo's and i need to know for my future build. I wil have a lot of restriction and thus need more pressure. And i don't need a combo pump because i just bought a singel one , and i don't want a dual loop. Thx

    +Darwin PC Maybe you can educate me a little, i am building in a phanteks ethoon elite in a few weeks and was wondering if i need two loops or go single loop. I am afraid that d5 from ek wouldn't have the pressure needed to handle multiple rads, two CPU and a gpu block. So two loops or a double pump combo would actually handle it?

  • @DarwinPCmods

    @DarwinPCmods

    7 жыл бұрын

    Honestly I think a single D5 could handle it fine. They are pretty powerful! I personally don't see any benefit from having multiple loops, there isn't really a performance benefit, so it's just a case of what you think looks best / what you prefer.

  • @alexlap3303

    @alexlap3303

    +Darwin PC I was told that d5 pumps could have issues with pushing liquid through the gpu, a CPU and 3 rads. Something about head pressure and all, i don't want to use a ddc since it generates lots of heat. so was wondering if a dual pump combo could have a higher head pressure if try are together or i have to split them up on the loop?

    Please provide temperature benchmarks. I guess third radiator is overkill but it looks beautiful. +1 for the green Tt stickers. Why did you not plug out the ATX from mainboard and bridge it? I thought it is dangerous for the components. My final verdict: 9.8 Dissemble the flow indicator and paint them green :D If you buy white furniture you get white stickers to cover the screws, maybe it is a good idea to cover the holes? I also have a MB with this cover (sabertooth Z97) and I HATE those little USB AUDIO Power switch etc. connectors :/

  • @DarwinPCmods

    In series the pumps have higher pressure, whereas in parallel they would have a higher flow rate. The higher pressure is good to get the coolant around the large loop, especially when bleeding the air out. Also gives redundancy in case of pump failure. Thanks!

  • @DarwinPCmods

    Not really, as the thermal capacity of the radiators is large enough that the coolant temperature does not increase much. It's more efficient overall to have all your components in the same loop.

    forCPU and GPU you need 3 Radiators, 2 Pumps and 2 reservoirs? woudnt be just 2 Radiators and 1 pump + seperate reservoir for each radiator enough? and these 3 radiators connected in a row seems overkill to me. max. Temp would be room temperature, no?

    Yes it's overkill, that was the aim.

    I drilled and riveted them together. I also drilled and bolted through the reinforcing corner brackets at the bottom.

    If the loop is sealed properly, the level will be stable. There might be very slight losses over time due to evaporation.

    Looks nice. But why the level of the right reservoir isn't changing? While you're fillling the loop, the levels changes not even one time...

  • @DarwinPCmods

    @DarwinPCmods

    Because the right hand reservoir is sealed (the cap at the top is tightened). I could only fill one reservoir at a time, as otherwise one would run empty before the other anyway.

    Your pump works EXTREMELY fast! I have an EK-Quantum Kinetic TBE 200 D5 and a 360mm Monsta radiator. But why is my water flow extremely weak? RTX 4090 80 degrees?? help me please .. I ask perfect pump for high speed storm

    Is there a very big advantage to having 3 radiators? Also, what is the advantage of 2 reservoirs? Sorry, I'm new to this. Thanks!

    This loop could probably function perfectly well with 1 reservoir and 1-2 radiators. The main reason for more was aesthetics and because, why not!

    Hi, yes the mobo was modded so it could fit with the full cover block, and painted white with green vinyl detailing. For more info see the build logs here: www.darwinpc.co.uk/x99-sabertooth-mod/ www.darwinpc.co.uk/x99-sabertooth-part-2/

    If they stop moving, you can see the indicator inside. So they still show whether the coolant is flowing. Also, I needed to break up the top tubing run, as the max length of tubing I had was 1m.
