FILIPINO MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY - Forest Pharmacy and Hard Work! (Philippines GRIND)
THERE WERE DEFINITELY A FEW FIRST TIME EXPERIENCES FOR US WITH THIS FILIPINO MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY IN BUENAVISTA, AGUSAN DEL NORTE!
We headed off into a rural area of Caraga for our next "SalikLakbay" with the Department of Science and Technology here in the Philippines. This community in Buenavista is home to many Higaonon, a group of Indigenous People here in the Philippines. We were welcomed with a ritual and then proceeded to explore, interact, listen and learn. Right away, you could tell the "forest was their pharmacy". I had the opportunity to experience many unique ethnobotanicals...
And then found myself having fun and learning about banana work! You just never know what will happen on a "SalikLakbay"...

The last part of the video about the manong's speech really hits hard man! Again, thanks for sharing this.
That manong speaks simply but full of wisdom.
Filipinos are innovators most often as a necessity. Not only to make their individual lives better, but their communities as a whole. I have so much respect for people like them. Curious about the banana vinegar. How does the taste & acidity compare to other vinegars like cane, apple cider, & coconut?
mabuhay Kyle 'Kulas' you are really Becoming Filipino. God bless your heart ❤. stay safe 🙏
That spicy leaf or what we Cordillerans call GAWED is what you've already tried 5 years ago in Ifugao. during that 👉🏽👉🏽 How to chew betel nut episode 😀. The bamboo carrier is what ibaloi tribe calls KAYABANG(a little different design though).. 🙌🏽

You really are amazing bro. Thanks for featuring SIMBALAN. Kinaya mo. 💪. My snappy salute to you.
Morado banana is called Singkolyagas in my home province So. Leyte. It is very sweet and has a melt-in-mouth texture just like Lakatan (export banana). But among those ripe-to-est bananas, Tondan/La Tondan is my most favorite because of its just enough sweetness and chewable texture.
Nice vlog kulas....amping always kamo nila kumar and company...God bless po...salamat SA pagbisita SA buenavista, simbalan. Mga kugihan Jud mga pinoy
It's good exposure for a westerner and locals as well to experience the life of indigenous people.

Very interesting video Kyle. Some of those plants grow in the Caribbean and by the way there is a musical club out of Cuba called Buena Vista Social Club that projects some similarities indeed, search for it. Enjoy guys.
This is my 1st comments for Kumar. He really comes across as very humble and no-nonsense...animal loving guy. Dili hambugero also...awesome Kumar..need to get married to get some Kumar Jr and follow your footstep..
Omg Kulas that's so heavy man. Salute to the banana farmers for their hardwork. Kulas what's the taste of banana vinegar is it sweet taste? By nature i love vinegar especially cane vinegars like Marca Piña and the one Mimi is ordering with spicy vinegars. I don't know why, why i love for vinegars. Maybe i'm the only one who love vinegars in our family. Mimi always saying to me that i'm like drinking vinegars because it's always empty. Hahaha funny but true.

Careful with your back! Proper body mechanics! Always protect your back. You wouldn't want lumbar or cervical radiculopathy.
The song was from god in Higaonon ☁☁☁🌈 And the color for higaonon is red yellow and black 🔴🔴🔴🟡🟡🟡⚫⚫⚫ They are the indigenous people in Agusan Del Norte. They are a primitive people. They chew on those spicy leaf that make your throat spicy 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 It is surrounded in clouds like Baguio and Marilaque and Bukidnon and Claveria Misamis Oriental ☁☁☁ Dut to it's high elevation on the valley ⛰⛰⛰☁☁☁ And they made a banana vinegar made from unripe bananas from it's extract 🍌🍌🍌 It is like 50 kilos carrying a one basket of banana made from rattan a small bamboo stalk 🍌🍌🍌🎋🎋🎋 Those are scandevish bananas AKA latundan and a lakatan bananas 🍌🍌🍌 the red ones are heavier 🍌🍌🍌🔴🔴🔴 And those bark are like couple decades old the older the park is it is really spicy. And those basket made from small bamboo stalk AKA ratan is a year old 🎋🎋🎋 And it lasts longer 🎋🎋🎋 And those vinegar are really sour due to it's acidity from unripe banana extracts 🍌🍌🍌

Hi Kyle. We call that leaf “buyo” in Ilonggo. They use it to chew with the “mama” together with “apog” and “bunga”which is a variety of a palm tree. Looks like Coconut. Its called betel nut if I’m not mistaken.

Kalingag - I get used of drinking it when we were in Davao Oriental on the early 70’s . I taste a lot of herbs when I was a kid it’s an advantage that I never have a hard time taking organic medicines whenever I get sick
Thanks for being part of this local community. Truely appreciate it .
I like the place I wish I could go there and explore
thank you Kulas...with lots of respect to our Filipino Mountain Community.

"Buyo" southern Philippines, "gawed" in the northern. Actuslly, its a South East Asian plant. Chewed with palm nuts and burnt then grouned sea shells.
banana vinegar is very good to mix in paksiw 😊..try it kulas
God Bless Kulas....
Older folks in Saipan Chew the same nuts and leaves we call it Pugua. Betel nut.
😊❤️
just like carrying 25 salmon up from the fraser river. 3 km hike back to the highway. good workout.
at home we called that Buyo in Ilonggo, or ikmo in Tagalog, we use that as herbal medicine, or Mama with apog and betel nut and tobacco
🤗🤗🤗🤗
In ilonggo, we call it BUYO. My mum always chew that with, bunga, apog slice of tabacco and buyo. They called it MAMA

Buyo (manika?) is betel pepper. It's the same leaf used by mama chewers (still common in Sulu/Tawi-Tawi and the Cordilleras), which mixes betel, areca nut (bonga, bunga, buwa, etc.), and lime (made from crushed sea shells). It's related to black pepper, and the kava plant which is drunk in Polynesia.
I MISS MY PLACE IT'S ALMOST 5 YEARS wako kauli dha.. 🥰
Hi Kyle ,for me thee kind of video's you do are the very bet showing different tribes and learning from them hardly any channels don't show and cover these peoples for me they are the real Philippines not all the commercial stuff so many video .Loved this video more of these kind of videos thank you .
❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘
Be careful with Manika - those are betel nuts/leaf, a known carcinogen. All in all, excellent vlog. Thanks for showcasing local culture!

Unfortunately many traditional "medicinal" plants are toxic.

The betel (Areca palm) nut is shown to be carcinogenic but the betel leaves have anti tumor properties according to studies. Betel leaf and betel nut are from two completely different plant families.
Latundan (or Tundan) and Lakatan. The two most common dessert banana cultivars of the Philippines. Morado, like Senyorita, is rarer, and usually restricted to local consumption.
kaningang tree/bark/trunk used by albolaryos para hilanat, bag o panganak paligo
I think that Manika is called Bojô in my province Southern Leyte.
