@@terigcreatives I think it was clearly said. The ExFAT format is replacing old FAT format which means that on very old operating systems it might have some issues. But it’s all just teoretical and very rare. If I say old operating system I mean sometime around year 2000.

I've had several issues with exFAT. Specifically, if it's not ejected properly such as accidental unplugging, it takes the terminal and a long wait to get back I'm the drive and hope nothing got corrupted. I've actually resorted to fixing it in windows yo avoid the hassle in Mac

Moving parts is not really the reason. The thing is that APFS was developed for SSD disks with flash memory and it might not work well on standard HDD drives, it could cause some fragmentations so I would recommend to use MacOS extender for standard disks.

FAT basically still exists in wide use for cameras. If your camera breaks up videos into multiple files, it's probably because it's a FAT system. Each file if you look at it is just under 4GB. Annoying if you just want to straight upload. Great for editors, since it has a side effect of being redundant. If one file gets corrupted, you only lose 5-10 minutes instead of the whole clip.

what is the background music?

Should Time Machine be on a separat partition or could it be on an additional volume to stay flexible with the shared space between the volumes on the same partition? what is safer for the Time Machine backup? or doesn't that matter anyways? THANKS

I think it doesn’t matter. I’m usually using separate partition just to know how much space exactly I am allocating to the Time Machine backup. Otherwise I don’t see any other advantages there.

Could I have beneficies if format the new internal SSD 480 GB in APFS format, for using as principal system in my MacBook Pro 2010 13”? It have a High Sierra. Thanks.

Well it is better to use APFS, will you see a difference - probably not. If it’s new disk and empty I would do that. If it’s full of other things than it’s not worth bothering with it.

Sorry for the late answer. In the video I went through many different formats. There are not such a big differences between them, but I would choose ExFAT format for the extra compatibility with all devices 👨‍💻

I tried extended journaled on xDrive set up, but time machine set up automatically changed it back to AFPS How do I set up drag and drop files to APFS format, x drive on this format doesn't currently work ?

Hello, if you use the disk for Time Machine it needs to be in APFS format. You can't use any other formats if you want to create backups on that disk. You will have to disable Time Machine for that particular drive and then you can change the format to any other that APFS.

I'm doing editing in Final Cut Pro on a WD Elements Portable HDD. How should it be formatted? I heard ExFAT is bad.

I also use WD drives. It works great. There are not such a big differences between the formats. Of course that for Mac is better the APFS format, but if you need to use the HDR on windows computers as well than don’t worry about it and keep it in ExFAT 👍👨🏼‍💻

I would say yes, but if you are already using it for some time, it’s definitely not worth it to be fully formatting it. You will not see any difference. But if you buy a new disk I would recommend to use the APFS format 👍💻

My 2015 iMac running Mojave sees SSD drives formatted with APFS but won't allow me to access any of the files on them. What gives?

It’s hard to say what would work. It’s already 7 years old so the compatibility might not be the best. It’s really individual with each disk. If you don’t have a lot of data on the disk you could try to reformat it to the older apple format MacOS Extended. ExFAT should also work, which will give you extra compatibility with windows.

Well actually, since Big Sur / Monterey, MacOS appears to not be able to "mount" ExFAT devices. Disk Utility can "see" them, but always encounters a problem when trying to mount, so basically since Big Sur the cross-platform use of ExFAT is destroyed. (sadly!)

@Joseph Well, as it turned out, actually, it couldn't mount any external storage devices at all (also not the HDD, nor install dmgs) I couldn't really resolve the problem, but I'm guessing it has to with me upgrading from High Sierra perhaps. I also went back to it, because all the Apple Apps (iWork, GarageBand, iMovie etc) didn't work (didn't even start), so it was pretty much useless.

I have a good question, I have switched to mac os from windows, I have some hard drives formated in NTFS, installed paragon ntfs and all work well, is there any good reason to format them in hfs extended?

Well as long as it works fine for you, there is no need to format them in a different file system. These I talked about in the video are just recommended for some specific reasons, so if you don’t have any problems while using your hard drives you don’t need to change anything

So why is ExFat now ending up showing an odd date when formatting on a Mac? In Catalina and Big Sur if you format using ExFat you get a wired Date.. December 31, 1969 6:00pm and Modified December 31st, 1979 at 11:00pm Happens on both of my SanDisk, SSD Portable drives, odd as hell... Now if I reformat them using a different System format the dates come up correct? So is this a ExFat issue or a Mac OS issue? I do share files a lot....

It is quite common glitch, it's not really an issue. 12/31/1969 is a UNIX default system date when no date was yet recorded by the system. It just wants you to enter the correct date and time. You really don't need to worry about it at all. I has never happened to me, so I can't tell for sure if another reformat will fix it. But as I said it doesn't have any effect on the functionality of the disk itself.

That is a great question! NTFS is developed by Microsoft and because it's a proprietary file system Apple unfortunately hasn't licensed it which gives us read-only support. If you need to work with this format and can't just reformatted to Mac supported format you will need to use a third-party apps like you said. There is a way how to do write directly to this disk format through terminal, but I don't recommend it, cause I might corrupt your data.

I don't think it has anything to do with the disk format. If you are making Time Machine backup it's easy to go back to the fully functional version. But if you don't have a proper backup it's hart do recover it. 🤷‍♂

@@nscharts4398 I understand now. The Fusion Drive was very typical for older macs. It’s not used today anymore. You will have to delete the Fusion Drive in order to split the disk in two. Unfortunately its not so simple. It’s done through the terminal. I found few articles about it on the internet, I haven’t done it myself so I cannot really give you my personal feedback. Usualy it’s not recommended to do that but I understand your point with the patcher to install macOS Ventura. You can follow these instructions www.lifewire.com/split-fusion-drive-apart-2260166 or try to find related video on KZread. I wish I could help you more, but I don’t have any experience with the Fusion Drive myself. 🤷‍♂️💻

@@vicentemoretti8 Well it doesn't conflict with anything. I am not just replicating Apple website, I am sharing my own experiences. Mac OS Extended is the old file system, which you can use on any disk, but on newer models of Macs is preferred format to use APFS. After Apple has introduced SSD disks APFS become the standart file system and that was in a year 2008, I don't think that a lot of people still use computer older than that.

I am belatedly realising that APFS is a disaster on 5400rpm mechanical HDD - has anyone got their system on SSD/APFS and a user directory on second mechanical HDD in HFS+ (performance doesn't have to be spectacular just good enough to sync with OneDrive/cloud storage) ??

I copied an iMovie onto an external drive but was expat formatted. I then deleted the movie on my mac hard drive to free up space. I emptied trash also. Now I've tried to re-open the iMovie video using the hard drive and obviously it isn't working. The file can't even be highlighted. Any solutions?

Maybe the video is still a project connected to iMovie app, did you try to open in through the app?
