FILA - The Rise and Fall...And Rise Again

FILA was exceptionally popular in the 1990's, but had a sizable fall before the decade was over. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, they're doing better than ever. This video talks about all the changes the brand has experienced over the years while attempting to assign reasons behind these rises and falls.

its so odd. It seemed like Fila and Champion were brands that nobody wanted to wear because it was a walmart brand. Now they're some of the most popular brands.

I bought a pair of Fila basketball shoes in 96 and throw them away around 6 or 7 years later because I only start wearing low top shoes only. I mean, they weren't the only pair I weared, but I did wear them a lot. I would buy more Fila shoes, but I basically didn't see any in stores since probably 98. For me, Adidas have best combination of price and quality.

I grew up in the 90's. This was explained perfectly in my opinion. I think it should be said that even though Grant Hill did sustain Injuries and its true that he was no Michael Jordan or Shaq, he was still solid when he came back and was able to play until he was close to 40. The fact that Fila signed him to a lifetime deal shows their loyalty and is cool, but it also shows his popularity. Hill was never controversial in any way and he was (and still is) just a likeable guy. People remember that when he was on top of his game he was NASTY on the court. This was a great vid in my opinion

In the 90s all I bought we're Fila. I loved them, from sneakers to shorts and t-shirts. It was the only brand I supported because they supported me as a woman. I could have cared less for Nike. To this day I still have not purchased a single Nike sneaker in my whole life. Asics and NB have been the brands I've turned to in their absence. I never thought of them as Walmart brands. I worked in clothing retail for the last 20 yrs. So I've seen their products hit shelves and racks at TJmaxx or Marshalls stores, compared to Fila clothing stores that I use to frequent. Nonetheless, I agree with your review. I think because they were just focused everywhere they lost out on growth. I'm glad their back. I'm glad they have good leadership. I wish them the best of luck. On that note, if my husband is reading this, size 8 babe!!

You were my opposite. I was Nike all the way from 95 to 2015. Nike everything, shoes, clothes, caps, hats, bags, finger rings, chain pendants. I collect balls that I can't even play the sports, like gulf, volleyball, tennis. I had Nike basketball backboard. I had a Nike skateboard and a Nike BMX bicycle. In early 2000s when apple ipods came out, Nike had their own device, of course I had to get the Nike mp3. I had several Nike watches. I had Jerseys from teams that I didn't support only because it had Nike on it. I was super obsessed with the brand, then I turned 40 and I just wake up with a change of mind, I am going to stop supporting big brands, and I stopped! Now I wear the cheapest clothes that I can find and I only shop for clothes once per year. I still have a lot of my old clothes, nicely preserved.

Fila was awesome in the rap community. A lot of 80s rap songs referenced their track suits. Look up fila suit that was def lyrics. Also see Roxanne Shante Def Fresh Crew song. Then the early 90s when i was in high school they became affordable. Then by 95 we graduated high school. The economy sucked and we couldn't afford any fila gear that was awesome thanks to mid to late 80s rap. Now in my 40s those who had or missed out the first time around can now afford it and pass it on to their kids as to how awesome this stuff was. I love your videos. Even though you didn't live through much of your videos content your usually thorough and dead on. You do awesome research and try to put yourself in that time frame. And yes I'm guilty i bought some red retro fila shoes circa 80s, at my local Ross a few years ago. So they realize gen. Xers are now able to reminisce and afford to live out or to live their fila dream that they missed out in the first place. Rebook was huge in my area in the early 90s. Pumps and pre season shoes. I had both but loved fila just not accessible in my small town. By the time we traveled an hour to a mall it was reebook left. So there ya go. Keep em coming man. Your explanations are 99% dead on 100% with this video. 👍

Since I was born in 1996 I don't have any memory of the good times for FILA. My only memory of them is seeing them on a rack at Ross, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, or Burlington Coat Factory and skipping over their items on the racks. It's cool to see a company bounce back though even if I don't have a personal connection with that company. Since we're on the topic of clothing brands, here's a request from me: do a video about SUPREME!! Their business model is revolutionary and has changed the entire clothing industry at large. Kind of reminds me of the Anti-FILA! You'd NEVER see a Supreme shirt on a Ross rack in a million years!!

I think part of it can be attributed to KPOP and asian culture in general gaining more traction in America. As FILA was always kind of "cool" in Asia and more accessible it was still a major player in the Asian markets even as it pulled out of North America. With the reverse influence of Asian culture such as KPOP, in the West, and the rise of the middle class within China, Korea, and other Asian countries, FILA was positioned to access their disposable income and was then again imported back into America and sort of cool to a specific demographic.

*This is one of Company Man’s best videos. Well done. And I’m one of his most avid critics but he analyzed FILA to the T here. FILA is one of the most ultimate 90s product. It’s amazing that they were once revered a major competitor to NIKE. Black and inner city people like me loved them because they were affordable and they were actually great shoes. Rappers would wear them in their videos as part of goldenage Hip-Hop and of course music artists are always great endorsement. But as music changed so did taste in culture. Fads come and go. When FILA first hit the Hip-Hop community, it was a big thing. The novelty was sensational. But eventually that novelty wore off. NIKE dealt with similar issues in the 2000 recession, how they were going to remain viable as new products come in. But Nike remained king because they had all the most popular athletes but more importantly the bankroll to offset a momentary fall in revenue. There’s really nothing that separates Nike from FILA: both are quality shoes, both are made in sweatshops and both have been overpriced. But Nike has always captured the image of the elite and affluent whereas FILA developed an association to poverty, one that it could never recover from. I do wish Company Man talked manufacturing and other related costs for FILA. But overall I thought this video had great content.*

As an 80s baby, I remember when Fila was, briefly, popular (like, 5th and 6th grade lol). They fell off the map, then came back out of nowhere recently. Glad this came in my recommendations because I'd def say 90s nostalgia had everything to do with it. First thought that came to my head when I first saw people wearing Fila was, "oh shit! I remember that!" lol.

Definitely the SK ownership and K-pop influence in Asia has contributed a lot to the brands popularity, it really blew up over the last few years here in Japan when I never saw it pushed before

I grew up loving the NBA, I always knew that Mike had Nike and Shaq had Reebok. But I had no clue that grant hill was endorsed by Fila as the Face of their basketball department,, and he was a good player back then , was great later, but also he was a mega star out college at Duke and then Fila signed him right out college., wasn't a bad signing by Fila but the thing is Grant Hill is a very quiet ,reserved man, hes not out there bragging and saying "look at my sweet shoes" kind of guy, which is what you kinda need someone flashy that gets a lot of face time with media.

For me Fila really became popular in the mid 80s with it’s track suits and tennis shoes! The hip hop community had really embraced them and there was even a hip hop song called “Do the Fila!”

I remember people in my middle school making fun of Fila because the products didn’t look “cool” and because you would only see Fila in the lower end stores (here in Canada at least). Now those same people are showing off their big ol’ clunky Filas trying to fit in, society is interesting lol.

Many years ago, I am guessing the earlier 1990's, I bought my first pair of Fila basketball shoes. They were expensive but they were also great shoes. Good quality, very comfortable and overall a very good shoe. I liked them so much I bought a second pair. This was before they were a really trendy brand and definitely before they became a cheap WalMart grade brand. If that model shoe came out as a retro release, I'd buy another pair without hesitation.

As a 13 year old I definitely think it’s just good stuff at the right time. Everyone thought of champion and Fila as “cheap” brands but now that they are making better stuff in a market that people like with still an ok price they are taking off.

I was born in 1996 in LA and FILA to me was always a “low end brand” that ‘gangsters’ and ‘bangers’ wore. Maybe that is just my perception but nonetheless that’s the impression the brand has made on me...

Yea you still young but back in the 80's when it was expensive it was only for big time drug dealers. An very hard to get they sold for $112 back then when the average good shoe went for $50 Back then you could find addias on sale for $39.99. Fila was as big a Gucci an Bally. They also had the velour tracksuit that cost $350 (which is like $700 in our money today) that were really big at the time. They were very exclusive an hard to get so when you seen someone with Fila it was an indication that person had money because Fila was an expressive brand that was made in Italy like Gucci

I grew up in LA and I was born around the same time, but I would say Fila was not a gang brand. It was much more a crackhead/dope fiend or a kid from a really poor family brand.

I currently have a $80 pair of Nikes, $75 pair of Pumas, and $30 pair of Filas, and the Filas are the most comfortable of the three. They just make a decent shoe for a good price that fits my foot well.

It is funny how things go full circle. In SE-Asia Fila was a premium brand back in the late 80s for tennis. Shoes, clothing, etc. - that Bjorn Borg look, but it's been eclipsed by Reebok and them Nike. In the late 90s, we could still find Fila as a brand in golf. Afterwards it just faded away. Two years ago, I noticed it coming back as a fashion brand. And to my surprise this year 2020 my 15 year old wanted to buy a small Fila sling pouch. I literally asked her "You know this brand?". I guess with kids her age social influencers do play a part. Kudos to Gene Yoon for reviving the brand.

Excellent report, so accurate and on point. I had a pair in 1996, I remember them being big and chunky, and they lose their lustre and freshness if you wear them regular, which you would when you are 16 years old as I was then. I think the price had something to do with why I bought them.

Staten Island person chiming in. Fila got popular here in NYC because it was an Italian brand, and all of the Italian people would wear their stuff just because of that. The big chunky soled women's sneakers worked with a lot of the women's jeans of the time, and as we're seeing currently, they brought them back and are just the same. Fila has always tried to position themselves as an elevated/luxury brand, but that has never been the case. I would have to argue that their biggest contribution to fashion is the aforementioned women's chunky soled sneakers that are just cute. That's it.
