Chipotle - The Rise and Fall...And Rise Again

All within the last 5 years, Chipotle has experienced a significant decline followed by what I would consider to be a full recovery. By most measures, they're doing better now than ever before. This video takes a look at the reasons behind these changes while profiling the rise, fall, and rise again of Chipotle.

There’s a few things I’m surprised you didn’t mention. Like when all the restaurants shut down for a whole day following the outbreaks to do some major cleaning. The marketing campaign owned up to the mistake and apologized. They laid out what changes they were making. So many companies sweep things under a rug and fail miserably. Chipotle took their licks and I respect them for that. Which is why I remain a customer.

I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots, in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate, this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are more powerful than restaurants, along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days, menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app.

It's interesting to hear how things have changed. I worked at Chipotle before the first outbreaks in 2014. Lines were so long that we almost never had time/staffing to measure food temperatures as regularly as we were supposed to. We'd basically have a line out the door of our restaurant from 3pm-close every day. I also remember calling in sick and having my manager ask me to come in anyway on multiple occasions.

Having worked at Chipotle I will give them credit for one thing; they absolutely learned from their mistakes and don't mess around at all when it comes to food safety. They might overwork the hell out of employees and enforce an unsustainable workload with the digital line, but they keep that food clean and keep everything in check. That's better than most fast food places can say.

Because no one can say that those people wouldn’t have died anyway and I’m talking about a pure Covid case, no other morbidities. That number is only second to suicides committed in that same time. So what have you fixed and what did you break? What’s been broken is a entire economy supply chain, inflation, teen depression and more. The harm caused by people trying to centrally plan our lives have disrupted and destroy more than it fixed, that’s if anything was fixed at all. Government can’t plan our lives and if you still believe they can then I hate to see how you measure success.

And I've only ever had one issue; while visiting a store in the Fort Lauderdale area, the sneeze guards ( the clear acrylic panels meant to keep the food safe) were missing. And the customer in front of me was actually reaching into some of the food. I contacted the store manager, who was useless. So I went to the district manager, who agreed that those needed to be replaced before serving. Thankfully none of us got sick, and the DM sent us a free meal card. I worked at Chipotle when the FIRST situation happened. My gosh! Our hours were cut tremendously (if you were non-managment staff), safety precautions changed on a weekly basis (at one point we were not allow to even mix old salt with new [FIFO] in the shakers), and the old 4 owners (Steve Els, Monty Moran, a guy and a woman) booked movie theatres regionally where staff had to meet for a nation-wide chain meeting. Those were crazy times, man...

I grew up in a small town in Virginia, so Chipotle was a treat when we went out of town. Then my dorm freshman year at VCU was a block away from a Chipotle and I was ecstatic. I would pretty much eat there every day. Sense then I have frequent Chipotle over the last 10 years. Even during the pandemic I would treat myself to Chipotle delivered to my door. But the last year or so Chipotle got full of themselves; they raised their prices, made smaller burritos, and overall had pretty lousy customer service. The last couple of times I visited, the onions tasted weird. Not sure if they were undercooked or not fresh, but the quality of food has definitely taken a hit on top of the other things I just listed. But the first onion issue Chipotle was in Rhode Island. I thought it was the particular store, so I didn’t go back. Then I got back to Virginia and one of their Chipotles had the same issue! Smaller burritos, lower quality food, higher prices, bad customer service; I’m gonna miss Chipotle but honestly I work too hard for my money to throw away $14 on a lunch I can’t even finish.

I will always remember my first Chipotle burrito some time around 2009. I had heard so much about it, and it indeed lived up to the hype. It became a staple for me and my coworkers through the mid 2010's. More recently, I don't go that often. A new one in town is often unkept inside, it felt dirty.

I've enjoyed eating at Chipotle ever since I've first walked into one in 2017. I used to have this crazy habit of eating lunch there for 2-3 times a week when I was working as an electrician, but I've since calmed down. I know their food is expensive, but whenever I get a chance I'll always eat there. Their food is bomb 👌🏼

I work at a Kroger, and we literally have a sign in the break room telling us to not come to work if you have a fever or cough and if you are already there to tell a manager to send us home. When I come to work one day and notice me getting a sore throat and coughing a lot, I go to tell my manager, but she won't let me leave. Its honestly irresponsible to do that because I'm touching people's groceries and produce and there is a good chance I could get someone else sick. I felt bad, but there was nothing I could do. (This happened before the coronavirus started) Honestly I feel like working while sick in any service industry should be illegal (if it isn't already) because there is such a high chance of getting others infected as well.

I was a big fan during their initial rise, around 2007-2010, before the outbreaks. The steady stream of food poisoning killed the brand for me. During the height of the outbreak, their name became a synonym for e coli. I never felt any desire to go back after how far they fell, and would not knowingly eat their food now.

Chipotle is one of the only fast food places I’ll eat at. There were phases when I went there 1-2x/week. I recall the quality of the food and flavors were a lot better than the current version of their food. Also, it was about half the price. I believe it was under $4 for a steak burrito back then.
