Gulab jamun is a milk-based Indian sweet. Gulab, in Hindi means rose and jamun is a type of fruit that varies in shape from cylindrical to round. There are as many variations of this dessert as there are jamuns. If you order gulab jamun in an Indian restaurant, you are most likely to get soft round balls floating in syrup. This recipe is for the type of gulab jamun commonly made in Fiji. It doesn't sit in syrup for too long, is cylindrical in shape and made from condensed milk. It has a denser texture and just steeped in syrup, not served floating in syrup.

YESSSSS!!! THIS is the Gulab Jamun my family both from Fiji and Trinidad know and love!!! My Aaji’s youngest sister gave me the recipe from when she made it back in Fiji and I’m pretty sure it’s almost the same as yours! I totally prefer this to the syrupy gulab Jamun that we refer to as “Rasgulla” Awesome recipe! I need to show your video to my Aaji :)

Thank you, Navin! This is my grandmother's recipe! She made the most delicious gulab jamun! I like the Indian gulab jamun (rasgulla in Fiji) too, but they tend to be so rich and sweet that I can't do more than 1/2. I do prefer this gulab jamun over the other too though!

Thank you for posting this. I am excited to try it with my family. I love Fiji style GJ and never knew how to make it till my MINL finally showed me. Yay but I loved your coconut milk and butter ingredients. I am gonna use coconut sugar for the syrup and old school condensed milk for the batter. Also I got the store bought nutmeg cause I thought it would be better and husband will ground the elaji. Excited to do this. 🙏❤

I'd love to see pictures of your "real" gulab jamuns, Govind. The jamuns I grew up eating were dark and long. Heres a link! st1.thehealthsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/jamun-seeds.jpg

Hi Ron! The gulab jamun is hard inside? It could be because your syrup was slightly harder… it might soften up overnight.
