Figuring Out Why The TD42 GQ Drives Like Sh*t | Patrol Build Ep. 6

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the TD42 back in and running like a charm, Lacey has decided that this week it's time to get the Patrol to drive straight - a task that is probably best left to the professionals. Let's see if the guys from Hackett's Discount Tyres can figure out what's wrong and what's right.

Just been through all this with my GQ. Jack the front axle up and make sure you can turn full lock left to right without feeling binding in the steering wheel. Then back off the lock nut on the top of the steering box and tighten the screw half a turn and check for binding again. Keep doing this until it binds then back off half a turn and to up the lock nut again. Next is the panhard chassis mount. Remove the panhard from the chassis mount and insert the bolt back in, if the bolt can rock back and forwards, you will need to weld a washer over the hole and drill it to size. Off memory, i think the bolt is M12, so i used a washer and drilled it out to 12.5mm. This hole gets worn out over time and allows the bolt to move around which exaggerates steering wobble. Once you fix these two things, it'll hold almost as straight as an IFS. Nolathane bushes for panhard are a must (i think you already have those), stay away from castor correction bushes as they fail quickly in offroad applications as they have less material on one side and tear under flex. The superior superflex arms will make the front diff more stable at speed, correct the castor and allow far more flex, well worth the money. If you can afford it, the superflex sway bar on the rear is excellent, greatly improves handling and forces the front to flex while taking almost not flex away from the rear. Looking forward to the next EP. Cheers.

Unreal thanks mate, yeah I’ll leave it for Lacey to reply himself but I believe he’s getting arms eventually which is why he hasn’t done anything else to fix the caster yet. Glad you’re enjoying the series 👌

@@MrBertiebprfc No worries mate. Also do the standard just up the front and try to wobble the top and bottom of the wheel. If there is any play, its its your king pins or wheel bearings. Wack the hub off and make sure the wheel bearings nut is torqued to 15nm. Last thing i forgot to mention is play in the tie rod ends, its usually just easier to replace this with some road safe ones and go for another alignment. They aren't expensive and should be done every 80000-60000km IMO.

drop boxes are good to 2" lift, at 3" with standard bushes the castor will will be around 0 which is still not great (a bit albeit better...). I think i have seen some drop boxes for 3" lift, but they are just lowering another 25mm which adds to more low hanging fruit to get caught up on. if he wants to run the 3" + 2" spacers, its time to get proper arms and get it done right. With that said, 3" and 35s will get you everywhere.
