Everyone can take a lesson from Alan, the second guy. Not one “uh” or “um” in his speech. So refreshing.

i just went down to my nearest hardwood store and spent about $140 on enough maple to make like 16 guitars... in some areas of the boards, it has flames that match prs private stock guitars, but the stuff is roughly sawn so it doesnt pop out the same unless i sand it.

I just got my hands on a slab of maple that looks beautiful with no sanding. I can’t wait to start building some necks!

Can you show some pieces with dead spots and defects and point them out so we know better what to look for?

How does one get flame from raw wood. I have family who runs and owns a lumber company and a mill. How does one find or cut the wood to get this beautiful grain.

The figure is in the wood and but is sometimes hard to see in the rough. BUT, the fuzzy areas of the cuts, in a pattern of waves or lines, etc, are where this wild grain is. You can also see ripples in the bark, and flame usually comes from the crotch of the tree, or a branch. Sometimes it is easier to see the figure in dim light, especially using a flashlight held next to your eye. It can jump out in the dark. 3 % of maple has nice figure, I have read, so it is uncommon. Also, grain refers to the annual growth rings. All these other effects are figure. Some woods do not have much figure, no matter what. Some, like oak, have a nice quartersawn figure but not much flame.
