Chris Dobbs She has all this additional weight (the padding) which is throwing her off balance as her center of balance has changed. She has to change her mentality. Figure skaters rarely skate with a bunch of padding, whereas I know hockey players who will go and just practice skating, without all the padding

@@chrisdobbs9155 The blade is shaped differently on figure skates vs hockey skates. Hockey skates have more bite to them, so they grab the ice a whole lot harder.

And "that girl" or "ex-skater" as you refer her as most recently placed 6th at the 2018 Olympics just over a year ago in Pairs, and was 11th as a singles ladies skater at the 2014 Olympics, and made 11 appearances at the World Championships since the 2003-2004 season, first in ladies singles and then in pairs. @@mandywaynick8725 in the other sport swaps, everybody else was polite, friendly, and got along, but these two were on another level. the girl chucked the puck at him and sassed back instead of answering the question, he puts the jersey on her rather than her doing it herself, they start bumping each other around, lots of laughs the whole time. in my mainstream American culture at least, if a guy/girl get personal or physical that fast with lots of giggles, it's romantic chemistry, and to myself and a lot of other people (not you and that's ok) it felt almost like a date.

They're completely different. Hockey skate blades are thinner, shorter, more rounded, and they don't have a toepick. It takes a lot of getting used to even for novices like myself. To see someone with so much experience skating, have some trouble, kind of made me feel better.

I despise figure skates. The toe picks and the thin blade really impact my skating style. Normally I'm a slalom inline skater with a rockered setup, which is very close family with the ice hockey blade. Transferring between the two is relatively easy with only an inverse of grip (inline skating; more lean = less grip, ice skating; more lean = more grip). I tried rental figure skates a few times and 98% of the time I was forced to skate backwards simply because I kept tripping over the toe picks. Since then I bought transformer ice blades which are hockey blades that can be attached to my inline skate frame instead of the wheels. The adaptation phase is practically non-existant now.

This is like the whole football player and cheerleader stereotype but on ice

There's a lot of maneuvers that are done in hockey that you can't do with figure skates, like tight turns and stops. She really wouldn't preform differently, because the toe picks and the blade characteristics make it basically impossible. That's why she couldn't go around the pylons smoothly, because she wasn't used to having to skate like that as well as handle a puck.

I mean the guy lived in north America for almost 10 years and most of the rest of his career was spent in Germany. @@jyhina Latvian is a Baltic language, unlike Russian, which is a Slavic language. Even Bulgarian or Croation are linguistically closer to Russian than Latvian is to Russian. That being said, Latvia is also bordering Russia and there's been a lot of exchange.

Top level hockey players are amazingly dexterous skaters. It doesn't surprise me at all that he had very little trouble adjusting to the blade. I think the biggest difference would be the boot style. What really surprised me was how useless the figure skater was in hockey skates.

drschplatt just saying this as someone who uses both figure skates and hockey skates, going from the thicker, toe picked figure skate blade to the thin, unsharpened hockey blade is so hard. figure skates can be used in more of a walking manner as they are meant for precision and generate speed, whereas hockey skates are purely speed based and are not intended to be seriously used when moving slowly

I love their chemistry and their extroverted nature

This was awesome! As a long-time hockey player I've always been impressed by figure skates; they make it look so easy, but I could never to those crazy jumps and spins and stuff. But not only does he try her game, she tries his, and both end up learning a thing or two. It must have been so much fun to do this challenge! I got a good laugh out of how they messed with each other.

I've never seen a figure skater and a hockey player get along before..

Fun fact: Latvian Helmuts Balderis originaly was a figure skater, but then became one of the best ice hockey players in the world.

I was a figure skater before I started playing hockey. Hockey is basically just figuring skating with less tricks and more hitting. Also the reason that he did a little bit better than her is because a lot of skating coaches are figure skaters and they make hockey players learn some of this stuff, especially crossovers and turns
