I've been doing martial arts for over 40 years. I understand it's not the art but the person. That being said I don't see any of this working in real life!

These are the delusions of that one weird teenage boy we all knew back in school. There is no possible way any of this works.... the incredible inaccuracy thrusting any weapon brings, crumbles his plan from the moment it begins. I am a cane user and carry a concealed pistol, there is zero chance I rely on my cane over my pistol to protect myself or others.

I guess it is not supposed to work like THIS in real life. Its about using the weapon of choice in a sort of chi training. You can connect and get used to the weapon while exercising slow, clean movements, that will get fester in the process. I guess the best way to train martial arts is by practice with another fighter. For example swinging a sword around doesn't make you a good fencer, but swinging it around in the right way can be a constructive practice if you don't have an opponent.

This comes off more as choreography. Which is unfortunate because after I left the army Im using a cane and I feel vulnerable. Combatives only works if you can get them on the ground in the first place. Guess ill keep looking.

This man has never been in a real fight. I clicked hoping for some technique, and instead got some movie nonsense. First lesson of being a real cripple who carries a real cane and has been in a real fight: don't expose that you can fight until the enemy has underestimated you and turned their back. Bowing is for honorable opponents in sports settings, sneak attacks are for guys who'd like to go home.

I didnt quite take it that he meant to bow before an attack, more like bow when practicing the form. Bowing is for respect, streetlights dont do respect. Now, while I do train and have for decades, I'm familiar with a staff, but never with a cane. I think that like with most forms, the moves arent to be used in an actual throwdown, but more to train your speed, reflexes and power. I love the forms we do, but I know they arent going to be utilized exactly or even similarly in an actual fight. I do know that I am fast and strong though, my reflexes help me block quickly. I attribute a good bit of that to form training.

EXACTLY! I tried one of the swinging strikes with a cane once and I ended up hitting my own self in the head. Even though it was pretty close to where I was gripping it and as such did not have as much velocity as towards the end, it stunned me for a couple of seconds. I would not want to be on the receiving end of a strike from more towards the end of the cane. I figure the head and the side of the knees would be pretty good targets for striking blows. But, this only is something I'm concerned about when I have the misfortune of being overseas. If I'm here in the US, I'm probably carrying one of my handguns. I figure 15 rounds of .45ACP will stop most situations.

san5324 Don't misunderstand me. I means fight cane or crutch is not a "formal" weapon, not traditional. The "fighting cane" is just a handy tool which experience weapon users take it instead of some form of weapons. Usually, in Chinese you may take that as a combine of cane (杖) - a short form of bo staff), and hook(勾). Barely use as tonfa, sword or even blade. If people good enough on martial art, they can take lot of thing as weapon and you can tell there are some Kung Fu behind it. People even can turn a stool, rag/clothes, broomstick.....as weapons.

  • @PcGameGold

Bernardfung2002 In the uk you get arrested for carrying any weapon, but a walking stick is not viewed as a weapon. so it is a handy tool for self defence which can be used like a bo to protect one's self. we also use to train with a dowl which is a short 6" thin pole.

Miganarchine My point is: that "cane" is not traditional Chinese martial art. People may take it as weapon, develop a system to train, fine with me. But this fake mace always claims everything as "Traditional Chinese Kung Fu". This is misleading.

Plenty of us who use canes mostly for extra balance and support while walking have learned that rotating the cane to a "backwards" grip improves balance. This video is interesting, but I'll never again be able to perform these kinds of athletic moves. I enjoy seeing the traditional stuff because I like to learn. Maybe I'll even use something that I learn someday. I just wouldn't assume that the backwards grip always means that someone has any skill or background in traditional Kung Fu.

Sir, have you been in many fights? I applaud your effort, but such choreographing is seldom how a confrontation unfolds. There are numerous objections to your instruction, however, the most obvious is that you are underestimasting your enemy. At the very least, having a sparring partner would be advantageous towards simulating an encounter more realistically. Best,

Like half of those moves require hitting a person in the face with a 2" diameter end, 10" from you, and blind. Oh yeah...totally legit. Cheap canes are often sold in Truck Stops across the US - many truckers (myself included) would walk with one in the more dangerous areas of the US or internationally, since we cannot legally carry a weapon on our vehicle. Besides being valuable to keep your footing in icy parking lots - the aluminum shaft and head makes a quick smacking stick. If you want to be prepared in a shitty area and cannot carry a real weapon, just get a metal cane and use it in the obvious way. moreso, it would be in your best interest to get a Tactical Defensive Flashlight - they're LED flashlights that strobe - one flash of it in the face of somebody and they'll be immediately disoriented, which is time for you to make your moves. They're high-quality aluminum and have a serious heft for their size so they could be held in your fist to punch with, and smash someone with the heel. If you're ever in a bad situation, carry the flashlight, a fully charged phone with signal, and scream "fire" - carry the cane if it also happens to be icy, or if you need to smash this shit-head's dvds.

Love the enthusiasm. I guess this is more for practicing movement rather than real combat techniques, as there are some moves that don't make sense. For example, he hit left guy using half the reach of the cane then without creating more distance thrusted with the full length (and my feeling is that getting correct alignment in a thrust with that grip is risky at best). Logically the guy is more likely to be closing distance than increasing. And static blocking two opponents, one after the other, looks like bad technique as guy one will deliver a second blow as you do a second block. Couple of other nit-picks, but I would have enjoyed watching more and considered trying it out if the movements looks more realistic.

Jake, I think, along with this fine, fine instruction, you should be compelled to explain the vast differences in the legalities one might face when striking someone with a cane. A strike to the limbs or torso is one matter, a strike to the head or neck is truly quite another.

Ever notice that not once does he mention the Irish shillelagh, which was ( mine recently disappeared) and will be my cane as I'm a large part Irish. These techniques don't apply to the shillelagh nor if you're actually handicapped like me. Oh well.

If you had Irish stick fighting technique using the cane you 'might' have a chance but if the situation got really heavy I reckon most ppl would be in a mad panic swinging the cane around like a baseball bat no matter how much defensive practice they've done. One thing for certain; if you decided to run you'd look pretty friggin funny bolting down the road at full speed with a walking stick in your hand 😏🏃

You should purchase a Ten Shin walking cane designed by Steven Seagal. It is modeled after a bokken/katana with a war hammer designed for the handle. It is made from polypropylene so it is extremely durable. I dislocated my left knee in 2008 so I unfortunately need a cane for support. I just received my Ten Shin today and I love it! You could probably do some amazing moves with one. I got mine for a total of $57.00 through Walmart.

I started practicing Shotokan Karate and Jeet Kune Do in 1962. In real street fights none should last beyond a few seconds. Train well and practice often, forget the Walker Texas Ranger theater which could get you injured or worse.
