A dryer lint sheet rubbed on your skin will help disguise your scent. There is nothing more satisfying than a nice large bug zapper zapping away at the local bug population. I don't know if you have bats in your area but if so setting several boxes will bring them in. they tend to decimate the mosquito population.

Yes! You are absolutely right about a big bug zapper. We do have bats and we just saw one the other day! We would really love to build a bat house or two. Thank you for the advice!

Hello from Kenai! Yep, the mosquitos are pretty bad. I am going to try something new this year. Mosquitos don't travel very far so I am going to buy a ton of Mosquito Dunks and see if my neighbors are onboard and I to build perfect mosquito breeding pools in tires and birdbath's etc. Then put the Mosquito Dunks in there. They don't hurt dragonfly nymphs but keep the mosquitos from maturing. All natural, no poisons or toxins, not damaging to wildlife. I may also buy some mosquito traps that hook up to propane. We're also clearing more of our property so we can attract more dragonflies with strung lines. Even if it doesn't kill the mosquitos off it will make me feel better getting back some of my pound of flesh.

That's a fantastic idea and we would love to know how that works for you! We did notice the cleared areas aren't as bad and we built a bat box and bird houses for the tree swallows. We are hoping they take up residence and eat away at the mosquitos 🤞

Don't forget your pee-screen against the vertical sheet under the front of your seat. Any hard sheet of plastic will work, That strand board will swell up and crumble over the years if allowed to get damp. And of course the 2" foam pad seats for winter, much warmer ;)

Yes! We ended up using an extra piece of metal that we had from the roof for the screen, and we've got our foam here and ready to go 😀

An incredibly sturdy crapper, So sturdy no bear shall enter. That said, I do recommend you add to peep holes to the door. One at normal height and another at seated height so you can peer out to ensure a bear is not waiting for you to exit. I am not sure of your future plans for the toilet, but you might consider a vent to enable fume dissipation. Really good work and design. Your videos are very polished, and the camera work is superb, Kudos to the "cameraperson"!

We wanted to be sure it could withstand all of the earthquakes and tsunamis in our area 😅 we do want to go back and add the classic half moon peep hole in the door when we paint it and trim it out. As far as the camera work, we both put in an effort to capture the important parts. We have never done this type of recording in the past, but we are working on improving whenever possible 😉

Be sure to use a bucket of lime! We had outhouses at our lake property and if you sprinkle in a scoop of lime after you're done, the outhouse always smells just fine and it's a LOT nicer when you do the spring cleanout. Lime breaks things down and keeps it smelling fresh.

You will want a piece of 2 or 3 inch Styrofoam for a seat in winter. Much nicer than the cold toilet ring. Just a little tip, store toilet paper in a gal can with a lid or a hard small cooler with lid. Mice will have a field day if you don't. Nice job on tiny house😂 also motion lights are great for outside when it's dark time.

Peppermint will drive misquotes away. Any strong herbal smell will. Your roof should have 3’ of overhang on all sides to keep the snow back. Should really make a pitched roof that extends 3’ out past the door and make all the snow slide off to the sides. People always make these too small. You don’t want your knees banging the door when sitting down. 😊 I’m just relaying what I’ve learned by my mistakes. I didn’t have an indoor toilet in my cabin for years. At least 6” thick walls to insulate. Toilet hole should be extended down on all sides at least 16” to help with venting. Ok, enough critiquing. 😊

We have used citronella, peppermint, and Lemon grass essential oils to repel the mosquitos, but they unfortunately do not work. We found only deet or a thermacell works here. The roof over hang is 13 inches front and sides, 12 inches in the rear. No rain comes into contact with the siding, which was my goal. At 6,2 I have enough room that my knees are nowhere near hitting the door when in the sitting position. Someone could actually stand in front of me while sitting with the door closed. We have no intention to heat or install insulation or sleep over inside the outhouse. We have used outhouses in the past at -30° Temps in fairbanks without issue. So, the climate here is not hard to endure for 3 minutes. As far as the peaked roof, I never plan to clean off the roof in the winter. It will hold more than enough weight to support whatever snow we acumulate in this area the entire winter, which is rarely more than a few feet. I have it sloped to the back so that I do not need to shovel any snow that may slide off. I have a different opinion on the outhouse size, and I think some people build them larger than they need to be. Think about a portapotty at the fair? They are smaller dimensions than even this outhouse, and thousands of people use them to do the deed daily. I think some people must hang out in the stink house for hours. I'm in and out quickly. Thanks for brain storming on the outhouse build with me 🙂

Make sure to line the waste hole (covering the wooden portion) with heavy plastic, like a bucket, to keep-[ the urine from soaki8ng into the wood, thus causing it to smell.

Yes, my uncle ran a cattle racing Minnesota! He built smudge fires for the cattle to get relief from the mosquitoes and deer flies!! It works!!

They most certainly are, get some bird houses up with 1-1/2 entry holes the swallows will occupy them and really help keep them down, but don’t put a finish on them, the swallows won’t use them for a couple years

Hello again! We have seen some of their videos, they are great content creators! We have found very small amounts of time to watch any KZread since we have moved off-grid. It is a full-time job out here living like we are. This may come as a surprise but when living this lifestyle we get so much experience in person every day that watching someone else live similarly as we do every day is not an enjoyable way to wind down. We often spend our free time writing back to viewers, cooking, planning our next day, or just relaxing.

That was a helicopter with a water bucket under it. More than likely it was putting out a Wildland fire somewhere nearby.

Is this an out house or a bunker like wow. I think you have more nails then wood.

We really wanted a strong permanent roofing so we went with steel. We did add a rechargeable light on the interior for when it is dark 🙂

I'm surprised the dirt was fairly manageable going that deep - I guess the permafrost stuff is farther north...

We live in the deep south of Alaska! 🤣🤣 Our frost line is about 4 to 5 feet deep, but no permafrost, luckily. Thankfully, we didn't run into any ice when running the auger this time like we did when drilling for the garden posts.

Some of the roots on those two trees were exposed because of how they grew out of old cut-off stumps. We were spreading the excess soil on them to keep frost off the root. We grade many yards of top soil from our land and sew it into the garden in another video. Check out building our moose proof garden video. Thanks for watching 🙂

Outhouse holes should be at least 6’ deep. Gives room for sawdust and lime. I have dug several outhouse holes in my life. 😊 I’ve lined them with 1x12 boards 4’ down to keep it from collapsing. At least a 6” vent pipe keeps the smell down. Will a moose want to rub up against yours? 😊 I didn’t have those guys around. I like how you two think things through and do your research.

We actually hit heavy stone at about 4.5 feet, and it was very difficult to dig any farther in this spot. If it fills in before I have a septic tank installed, we will dig a deeper hole with an excavator. The soil seems stable here when protected from runoff. This property was an abandoned homestead. It had two collapsed out houses on the property. When I removed the old wood structures, the holes were still stable, and they had been here for 20 plus years. If the dirt was unstable, I had planned to cut top and bottom off of a 55-gallon drum and lower into the hole for side support. But it seems to not be necessary. The moose are outside of the outhouse quite often! I have been surprised by them after doing the deed. But that is better than being surprised by the bears! Thanks for watching 🙂

Ok, not done. 😁 Think about the toilet in a house. The toilet seat doesn’t have an extra 5-6” sticking out in front. Should move the toilet seat forward a bit. Heat would be nice in there but I know you have limited power. 😊

I believe the video is deceiving, I will answer all of your points for clarity, but an outhouse is not rocket science 😉. The toilet seat is as far forward as possible. bringing it farther forward would not allow for a 2x4 studded wall in the front for support. It actually is not an issue even for my 5' wife. We have no intention to heat the outhouse it rarely gets below 15 degrees in our location, no negative 40 temps to deal with. When we build our cabin this winter, we are plumbing a septic line to install a diy septic system at a later date, so this is a temporary solution.

Like always a great build In ENGLAND they are known as outside toilets

You may need to add a vent pipe to allow the warm air from the pit to the atmosphere. I think it was on the "Mitchells in Alaska" the air condensed inside the outhouse and froze. You're zipping through your infrastructure projects. Are you going to start on a house or cabin or wait until next year?

Hello! We had installed a rectangular vent on the back made out of leftover treated plywood to vent the outhouse hole that was not captured on film. We are trying to get as much as we can done before winter hits, and some jobs become impossible. We are in the beginning stages of building a cabin now and will probably work on it most of the winter. Content on that will be coming soon! Thanks for watching 🙂

We have not seen any mosquitos here since August! When they come back out at the end of next June we will give the Dettol a test run! 🙂

We use safe essential oils on the dogs to repel them.

Hey, it could be just like city water then! Recycled sewer water 😅 we put the outhouse in a good place, keeping the spring in mind. Luckily, we were already aware of the spring at that time.

Luckily for us, the spring source goes in the opposite direction of the outhouse. When you look at regulations on septic setback distance from water wells, it's actually not that far compared to the gap we have. The spring is an estimated 700 feet away from the outhouse, and there is a ravine separating the two. With all that being said well and spring water can change so fast, it is best practice to purify your water every time before drinking because it's really not practical to constantly test the water. We will purify all drinking water and test at least once a year to see what changes.

It’s amazing that people doing these videos going off grid or building a Homestead start out with all this type of money you see the diesel truck in the background the gooseneck trailer the bumper pull trailer all this equipment the normal person can’t do any of this, especially with the Milwaukee tools, the saw alone is a $400 saw and then you have a nail gun which is Milwaukee which is another few hundred dollars it’s sad to see that people with money do this but the average person can’t afford to do what you do

I hate to have to delve into this but you are ignorant to many facts. We are skilled blue collar workers that put in the work and time over many years to be able to afford what we have. You talk about the diesel truck in the video it is a 26 year old 500,000 mile truck we bought over 10 years ago for 7,000 dollars. Most people spend more than that for a daily comuter car to get to a 9 to five. We work in the trades to make our living so yea we have invested in the proper tools to do the job correctly. Everyone's dream looks different. If you prefer to pound 1000s of nails by hand you are welcome to do so but please save your disrespect for somone else.

OK let’s add to my comment. I see a enclosed trailer and more Milwaukee tools as of a jigsaw along with probably numerous other tools and heavy equipment that are not shown on the vieo yet so yeah, the average person can’t do this.

Your ignorance is showing. Again. They have mentioned multiple times that they work in the trades. For a living! Everything you see here was more than likely used to make said living. Obviously not many people can go out and buy every piece of equipment you see here overnight. You buy it as you need it over time. I'm not sure what you do for a living or where or how you live but I would bet an entire paycheck of mine you didn't buy Everything you needed to work and live in a day or three. Proper planning and budgeting to achieve ones dreams is a thing millions of people do every day. Even this "average" person you keep feeling the need to mention.

Obliviously you haven’t seen the skid steer and side by side yet! This is normal if you have planned for years ahead of time and are prepared for what you will face! Don’t forget, for all that tools and equipment, they still don’t have a house!! They are starting from scratch, literally, so shut your cake hole or watch something else we don’t need negative ….people like yourself raining on their parade! Be proud for them! They have done and are still doing what most only dream about, it took years already just to get to this point
