Smoke jumpers are true heroes. Where I grew up there was a place in the Lewis and Clark Forest (Montana) where several smoke jumpers were encircled by fire and died. They had no where to run and nothing besides small fire shelters to protect them. It was such a tragedy. There is a marker to remember them.

Is that the one the movie was made off? It's a hazard of the job. I've got burnt patches of skin, one bloke I volunteer beside had an overrun in the early 80s and he wasn't supposed to live. His skin is a crook colour, he lost fingers off both hands and more. I've also been hospitalised with smoke inhalation after a house fire (wife was REALLY REALLY unimpressed with the dreaeded knock on the door from the group officer and a fellow brigade member). It was a tad like an asthma attack whilst getting a punch to the guts after drinking a liter of water, you get put on high flow oxygen and bring up your stomach over the yard. The fire side we all enjoyed in our time (I work in comms now) but the fatal accidents are something that stay with you forever and it's amazing the triggers that make you remember the bad things. It took me 10 odd years before I finally broke down and fell apart. Being in a small town I knew each of the people I had to go to. There are details I couldn't repeat to the average person but make you feel so helpless.

@@NullaNulla Yes, they made a movie about it. Every time I see the markers my heart breaks. I'm sorry you are still dealing with the pain of loss and terrible memories. We need brave men and women but often forget they can't just ignore trauma. I hope you have support and appropriate medical care. Good Luck and thank you. FYI- I called my Dad and it was the Mann Gultch Fire. The movie was called "The Red Skies of Montana".

Are you thinking about the Mann Gulch Fire on the Helena NF? 1949. And there was the South Canyon Fire in Colorado in 1994 (Movie "Smoke Jumpers" in 1996 based on Don Mackey). And then of course "Only the Brave" which is about the Prescott AZ Granite Mountain Hotshots.

The (unintended but known) consequence of medical professionals leaving the NHS for the N. America or Down Under is that NHS has to recruit from Asia and Africa. Meaning poorer countries which already have fewer doctors and specialists are losing these experts. Something is not right here.

Nepean hospital is actually in the suburb of Penrith, just a few blocks from where I spent a couple of years. This mob need to do proper fact checking. Also WTF is wrong with the pom cop in Perth... go around doing that to everyone you make yourself a target. Also the passenger is at NO requirement or expectation to talk to them or consent to anything. As for the scene with the RFS, catch22 but often you'll be safer in a house than a vehicle with a fire passing over unless they had enough water to operate the vehicle sprays (house offers more insulation to the radiant heat which is the killer). The amount of heat you cannot convey to people. I still after a decade have odd skin and no hair in patches from my last big fire.

Do rural Firefighters not have BAs? Vehicle fires are extremely toxic. In Ontario Canada our Ministry of Natural Resources when fire impacts structures don’t fight the forest fire. They let the fire burn but use the water instead to create a high humidity bubble around the structures with sprinklers. Let the fire burn but save the houses. It is far easier and safer.

Hey mate, Im in the rfs we dont have BA equipment at most stations unless there are in Sydney or at a major station. Those with this gear and training here are called village fire fighters as they respond to structure fires often. The majority of us do not have BA equipment and in some brigades we dont even have basic masks. Alot of information in this video is however wrong.

No they were full of shit. They can continue if you give then revoke consent but you do NOT as the passenger at least have to even talk to them. The driver however being a driver under road rules has to comply with ID etc but search of driver and/or vehicle is a touchy subject.
