Fifth Gear Web TV - 27 Litre Rover -- Charlie's Story
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Jonny interviews Charlie -- the owner of the amazing 27 litre Rover SD1 that we saw hitting over 160 mph in this week's episode. In this video, Charlie gives us the story behind his incredible home-made car that has the same engine as a World War II Spitfire plane.

'The Ministry of Defence are a bit funny like that..' Thank you sir, I haven't laughed like that for a long while!
Always wanted to see something like this A huge and powerful engine propelling through huge ratios to high speeds
Now that's what I call a powerful car!
Car and driver are just badass!
thats..........AWESOME!!!
yeah, redline is actually past peak power. It means that the car engine is spinning faster than the wheels and you need to shift up asap. generally speaking of course. Different cars have different red line placers.
dat soul patch tho...
Incredible.
genius great passion
A true car enthusiast
He should to come to nevada salt lake to try to max it out.see whats the top speed.
Legend!!
He is WINNING!
That Rover is awesome, Jeremy had one built for him with a V8 by some tuning company. The video is on youtube somewhere. I love this one though
It just sounds so badass.
Would like 2 know more about th GEARBOXES used can u tell more would love 2 try this project pros and cons of drive train
i knew this guy years ago when he made it!!
@ 2.37 the sound is that sound you will only ever get from a Merlin engine, even though its a Meteor its only the lack of supercharger that make it so.

Awesome car we use to have this car in India Standard 2000.
legend
some crazy person must produce more like this....
what a winner!
Monster!!
coolest idea i want a merlin 27 in a convertaible toyota hiace, hiace with the whole roof off and a massive merlin midship in the back like a naked bike maybe even a hiace turned flatbed merlin bolted on the back. too cool charlie you champion
peak power is often NOT at the redline but a fair way before it, the redline is the engines safe rev limit, exceeding the redline can cause the engine to damage itself, sometimes even blow itself apart.
He says it's a 1981, but I ran his plate on the HPI Check and says it's a 1982 Rover SD1 2600 with a 27000 cc engine. Anyway, it's an awesome car.
redline is the max you can rev before valve float or damage may occur.
@typhoon5000 I suspect that's the way it's mounted in the car, it's low down and about 5/8ths of it are sticking into the cockpit, oh and I don't think it has the super charger on it
@mrjost55 RPI was the company. They also build hammond's SD1 racer they used for top gear
I suppose, using Rover's badging convention for the SD1, this model would be a Rover 27000 SE or Vanden Plas or whatever.
@DVcustomZ Redline is the limit of your car's RPM, when racing, as soon as you reach the redline, you need to shift up so that you don't lose any power or speed and take advantage of the power the engine is producing at the redline, which is where the engine is at it's peak in power ;)
I wonder how many gallons to the mile it does?
The list of problems is longer than that but all the fun :)
@saintofallkillers yeah but it has 1550 foot pond of tork
Interesting
dammnnnn i want that car
0:24 the V12 sign is taken from a merc s600 and the 27L sign is from ummmmm somewhere.
what does he run the car on?, suppose it was an old piston engine from a spitfire so not kerosene
Neat one ... and not a terrible idea as they say. In the good old psat they indeed would use airplane engines in cars. Of course the tires in that time we're a joke.. so was the suspension..so was the.. but there was power!
Actually, in many engines, long before redline. My little non VTEC Honda makes all of 106BHP at 6200 RPM, but will rev to 7200. My old Ford with the 4.0OHV V6 made 131rwhp peak at 4100RPM, but redline was 5200.
wow, what a fabricator. I want him to work on my car!
He should use the variant of the Rolls Royce Meteor that was used in the FV214 Conqueror tank that puts out 810 horsepower.
A little before that yes :)
just one word describes both Charlie and the car, "Mental!" And I don't mean that in a derogatory way.
i would of laughed so hard when the guy on fith gear asked him what he has got left to do and the owner said "oh , well i got a bit of welding to do on the chassis and mot it next week" ;)
@luedriver My car can do that kind of speed, but the engine in that vehicle is very impressive!
@kibcubed You could see it struggle to reach 160... it has no chance against a Veyron. Forced induction by way of four intercooled turbochargers and four times the maximum RPM give the veyron a huge power/weght advantage.
@R34Maniac Remember the "i did more maths than you"?
@PoProstuKarol It has 2 LPG tanks in the trunk... not strange with the petrol prices those days... €1,73 á litre in the Netherlands. I don't know the MPG ratio of this car, but... it's not a daily ride i guess.
@RapidSilver1 Thanks, and he should go to the place where james may maxed the bugatti veyron, to max his car lol
if he can give a full service on this Merlin, probably it can give out more than 1200hp
It looks like a fairly compact motor for being 27L. I have a 6.4L turbo diesel V8 in my truck that I think is bigger than it LOL.
wooo
If this car and a Veyron were two people racing on foot, they would both travel at huge speeds. Yet the Veyron would be sweating and panting, and this humble little Rover would be gliding along non-chalantly in bunny slippers and a mug of tea its hand, wearing a perplexed look on its face as if to not understand that it is in fact in a race.
@Paganiproductions It's no Pagani Zonda, but it's as fast as a decent Porsche and yet you can still drive it to work every day. And it costs less to run than a ford fiesta. I'd say that's a pretty good combination. And electric cars are easier to tune as well. I say this as someone who tunes rc electric cars.
I would have loved to help out with this kind of project. On a side note, why the hell are engines from tanks top secret from the 1930s?

The simple answer is, they aren't. He said quite clearly - it was 'Restricted' which is the lowest category of oversight - Top Secret being the highest. Pretty much everything produced by civil servants, the military etc. is categorised on this scale. Even documents listing how many toilet rolls the government buys is 'Restricted'.
i wonder what a left hand drive burnout would be like
@paulb4uk yes but only we shall survive. so choose wisely
wonder how much gas it runs on
@saffronwales what actually needed doing was new brakes and new tyres that why he only took it upto 150mph
SOMEONE TAKE THIS MAN TO THE SALT FLATS!!!!
@saintofallkillers It's a very slow revving engine.
I'd like to have a beer with this guy and listen to what he has to say.

supercharge it!!
@ViperVenomACR It's Petrol
That was a meteo as is this and John Dods did not build it either, Paul Jameson did
@DVcustomZ Then next time elaborate your question ;)
@saintofallkillers Yeah but what about the torque figures...
@JELH Okay, just asking.
@JELH Can you cross check his plate? Do you work for the police or something? 'Cause if you don't, that's illegal.
Just when u think uv seen it all.....
@buttnut1080 Most turbines can't really idle, they can only go down to about %60 power or something like that, and they're extremely loud. Steam would be a better alternative, as they can still run on anything that burns, but they're very quiet, and have an insane amount of torque. Actually, now that I think about it... a small turbine would work really well as a generator like in the Chevy volt... if you could find a way to make it run quietly. Steam is still better imo though. :P
It was a tank engine. Fitted to the centurion
I'm somewhat in shock as to how powerful that thing is...
@michaeljagger7673

***** in todays terms its not that powerful but 150mph at 2000rpm no vehicle could do that unless its a truck. i cant imagine how much torque that car has.

michael jagger if you modified the engine so it could go up to something like 8000 rpm and managed to keep the torque, added better gearing (like one from them massive trucks designed to carry boulders) then it would go insanely fast!!
@jaggass
8 жыл бұрын
Joe Marvin Bigger engines cant rev as high due to their size and internal pressures. The max rpm's on Merlin/Meteor engines is about 3000 rpm. Those engines produce all of its torque from low rpm's anyway. Adding a supercharger or something and different gearing would make it quicker.
is it a diesel?? since it's a tank engine or petrol!
@2stepsaway820

Originally petrol, but his runs on LPG. The petrol would cost him a fortune as it does less than 0.1mpg.
Do u thing he'll get 1mpg?!
150 Miles Per Hour = 241.4016 Kilometers Per Hour
Car + Plane = F*cking insanity.
I suppose a RR Griffon would have just been overkill ;-)
doesn't he sound excited?!
@buttnut1080 Oh me too, I believe all forms of power can and should co-exist (none of this "Banning IC" BS...). Personally, I'm a sucker for a good old american V8. :D
I want to see this car do 0-60mph.
1:57 Am I seeing a LPG button? Does this car run o LPG? :D
Now that's what I call TORQUE.

This is my sentimental favorite but knowing the abysmal original build "quality" of the crappy chassis, for 200mph would rather be in a new stock Vette or Hellcat Charger. My 86 stick vette would just ease past 170.

This car has very little of the original left, pretty much only the upper body panels. Full custom built chassis/running gear. Basically a dragster/funnycar that happens to resemble an sd1.
@Danny7930

What did you do to the vette to make it go 170?
@fritzkatz

Almost nothing. I suppose living in rural AZ and cruising over 100 awhile every day helped break it in right and having long straight roads to let the speed build smoothly also. For stealth purposes or by chance my over 160 runs seemed to all come at night in cooler seasons so air density was good. Finally, early in its life the car had both mass airflow sensor and fuel pump issues so both had been repeatedly replaced and possibly tweaked. Frankly the over 160 night runs were anticlimactic. Car just developed a smooth drivetrain pulse like a loping panther and never cracked a sweat...7 speed gearbox got the best mph I think in fifth at about 4600 rpm with temp never breaking 212 and display showing 4 to 5 mpg, tracking straight and solid as if on rails. Remember too the coupes were much much faster than the convertibles due more to pure aerodynamics than a bit less weight. I bought that car new but could never coax either of my used early 90s convertible automatics past 140.
@Paganiproductions I live in Seattle and work in Redmond and I see Teslas all the damn time driving on I-90 and let me tell you, they are anything but slow. I think there's a problem with the Lotus turn signals though: because those rich pricks can never seem to get them to work. . .
Too bad the meteor engine didn't have a super charger like the merlin.
i swear Clarkson does this voice
Special type of guy great fun but I'd not like to have the stress of reliability on a trip to the coast..or the fuel bill.....
