The popular march tune ‘Lilliburlero’ originated in the 17th century. Henry Purcell printed it in his anthology Musick’s Handmaid (1689), calling it ‘a new Irish tune’, but the tune itself may have been around much earlier - it first cropped up in print in a collection published in London in 1661, set to the words, ‘There was an old man of Waltham Cross’.

André Danican Philidor, music librarian to the french king from 1684, compiled a collection of "marches and batteries for drums... with airs for fife and oboes" in 1705. In the wording of the elaborate title-page, Philidor announced that he had assembled marches "both French and foreign". In fact, without knowing how he was able to acquire the latter, we find in the middle of his collection a certain number of foreign marches. Among them, "the March of the Prince of Orange", alias "Lilliburlero".

It's not British to begin with, it's been imported to England by William of Orange and not long after it's been added to Lully's repertoire of military marches. That means that the tune has been regularly played by the French (royal) military since and for roughly the same time as it's been played by the English.

French version is known as the Marche du Prince d'Orange, and is attributed to Louis XIV's court composers Philidor the Elder and Jean-Baptiste Lully.

Sans doute mais je pense que cette version se rapproche plus de celle de la fin du XVIIème siècle, la version transcrite par Philidor, musicien et archiviste de Lully. Il note en commentaire de cette: "'entrée dans Londres du Prince d'Orange l'an 16...". La version en marche plus rapide qu'on entend dans "Barry Lindon" est je pense postérieure...
