    Aside from the fact that CK2's advanced video board is capable of displaying changing information more fluidly than old-fashioned physical boards. You'll never wonder how many soldiers are in an enemy army, only how the hell a loose duchy has access to _that_ many troops oh shit I forgot to check their alliances.

    Fief is one of my all time favorite games for all the reasons Quinns pointed out in the first half of the review. I don't share his feelings about the second half. He is right on some points. A streamlined euro, this game is not. The rules are absolutely convoluted, but they exist purely to support the theme. This is not a game about amazing mechanics. This is a game with super rich, evocative theme that will make you feel like a conniving feudal lord scheming for the throne, and the rules exist solely to present that theme. in this sense, they are designed much the same way as a roleplaying game; to define the limits of the imaginary reality you are playing in. Fief is tremendous fun for 5-6 players (never play it with less, as the board doesn't scale) who enjoy a rich, thematic experience of scheming, diplomacy, and treachery.

    Fantastic review. I absolutely adore Fief but completely agree with Quins' misgivings. A real beast to teach and complicated to play even if you know the rules well. The expansions are frustratingly enticing as they add so much more stuff but also increase what is already a complex game of too many rules. It's similar to twilight imperium in that way: not too complicated, just too many rules. I have the pimped out 3D strongholds and mills and the (delicious) metal deniers which all adds to the experience. Have even bought metal miniatures to replace the standee lords and ladies but still need to paint those. I too would probably prefer to play slip 'n slide but I still think it's worth the effort to learn the rules and play this game. Wish I had more friends who enjoyed these epic games. As it is I get twilight imperium to the table maybe once a year if I'm lucky (and beg people). This is an excellent game that probably deserves a (slightly) more streamlined and less unfairly random set of rules. Still one of my favorites though.

    Enjoyed the review, as always with SU&SD. I read the rulebook and watched some other reviews as well. Even though the didn't recommend it, I'm optimistic this is a game for me. So I oredered it. That's the good thing with SU&SD reviews, they give you a lot of positive and negative aspects of the game. And then their subjective opinion, which is clearly labeled as being subjective, ninetheless helpful to make up your mind.

     @greginfla @michaq11 @David Murphy Oh, sorry. I didn't see the notification on youtube that there were questions about the evolution of my opinion. So to make it short. I love it. There's a few drawbacks though. The rules are a bit cumbersome and fiddly at places. It could have been more elegant. Also, I think it shows it's full potential only with 5-6 players. I played it with my sons a lot (3-player games, sometimes 3-players with each playing two families) and it works, but it's not as it should be. I recently found a 2-player variant on BGG and think that one can be adapted to add AI players to fill up the empty seats. My boys and I are testing that at the moment. I since bought all the expansions, although they are in French and Spanish, and am working myself through the rules. Like that it has become a medieval sandbox game. I'm far from having the experience with it to give a good and informed opinion. So this is only my impressions. To me the biggest part is in the stories that develop. I don't think the game is necessarily balanced. And although there is no player elimination, one can be wiped of the board early and I think chances to recover from that are slim. Also there's a decent amount of luck involved with dice battling and card drawing. But I don't mind that since, as said before, for me it is about the story. Even when I played a game in which I lost, the things that developed on the board were always fun, interesting and worth the time.

    We played our first game last night. Just a few rounds with different strategies and we love it. The depth of interplay between players and the backstabbing that can go on is superb...and we are a group not into backstabby games. It doesn't feel like a game from the 80s and I have to disagree about the board...yes, it is a little difficult to see the fiefs and Bisho-pricks but that's the fog of war. It really does show how Game Of Thrones has the feel of that time just right...anyone can die at any time. And a member of our group who prefers co-op games over fighty games had a little 'crisis' during the play as he loved it so much. The fact that the VP points are quite low means you have to go after other players and form alliances. We are really looking forward to playing our second game. With 6players it must be amazing.

    Back in the 1990's we played FASA's The Succession Wars board game pretty much like this. Only with far less polite and with a LOT more back room dealings. Miss those days.

  • @EricLucero

    @EricLucero

    7 жыл бұрын

    Oh, Fief is not polite at all. And as far as back room dealings goes, the game literally has a mechanic (that Quinns didn't cover) where you can spend a carrier pigeon token (you get 3 for the game) to take any players you want to a back room and make deals privately for 3 minutes. Fief is a game where there is a mechanic (marriage) that creates an actual team between two players (not just an alliance) that win the game together and also has mechanics where players can dissolve this team by murdering their spouse with a hired assassin or by marching an army against them to slay them on the battlefield. Hardly polite.

    I played fief and it was fun. However, every time someone would get really close to winning, someone else would have a card to completely screw that player. It was like starting the game over every time someone got close to winning. After hours of play, two people finally decided to just make an alliance and win together. And, no one wanted to stop them, because they just wanted the game to be over. It wasn't a bad game, and definitely fun, at first. But, by the end, everyone was more than ready to play something else.

    Awesome game of our childhood (the game was Fief 2, before this reedit), but indeed event cards can be very randomly destructive. I remember playing, probably on the second round, "Starvation" and "Peasant revolt" combo on my brother's starting village, which spawns a lot of angry peasants, and effectively wiping him from the board before 5 minutes of play time. He literally threw the board in the air in response...

  • @EricLucero

    @EricLucero

    7 жыл бұрын

    That can happen in this game too, but the amazing thing here (that Quinns didn't cover) is that you are never out of the game. Indeed, players who seem wiped out actually have a perverse advantage of sorts through diplomacy. This is due to the powerful roles in the game such as the King or the Pope. NOBODY wants a player in the lead to get one of these roles, so most often the table can be negotiated to let the player doing the worst get these roles (since they are not a threat). But then, the thing is, the power of these roles as well as the victory point the come with all of a sudden makes that player a prize to form a marriage partnership with. In Fief, it's very possible to go from the worst position in the game to victory in no time due to the diplomacy aspects of the game.

    I played a game of this and won by the skin of my teeth. I think the stand out thing is that as the game progresses you elect higher and higher titles which have really complicated requirements so you have to get players to agree to elect one candidate by majority. These discussions are extremely heated and must result in one of the players getting a title so everyone is extremely involved. The next best thing is that once you've completed the requirements for winning the rest of the table has until the round ends to muster all their troops and lead one last charge to try and kill one of your nobles and it is extremely tense because no one wants to spend all their resources to gang up on another player and everyone is hoping to trick the other players into overcommiting. he game is a lot larger than the sum of its parts.

    Thats a real shame. Started to sound epic. But I guess they need to sit down and rewrite those rules. Very cool review as always thanks.

    As someone who owns this game, don't be too disheartened- it depends what kinda gamer you are. My gaming group is a little too... "fun" for this game. But if you've got a group of super-nerds who are happy to lose an afternoon and enjoy the fiddly details of the negotiations and the voting, then this game is worth it :)

    Maybe someone needs to tweak the rules to make it a little less random and a little more strategic.

    To me it seems like Fief makes a better roleplaying game with some strategic elements, than a full-fledged strategy game.

    It's amazing how many board games from the 80s are just worse versions of later video games.

    Not using music from the Dungeon Synth band Fief in your review of Fief the board game. I am disappointed. ;-)
