Not only one of the greatest moments in opera..... but one of the great moments in Western art.
when ever i hear this melody it always just about makes me cry and i am 70 now
Oh man, definitely one of my most favourite Beethoven pieces! Sóó beautiful, sóó intensely sad...
This is what should have been played in "The Shawshank Redemption".
So beautiful. My choir, the San Antonio Liederkranz, practiced this about an hour ago. Viva Beethoven!
Wundervoll! Könnte ich mir immer wieder anhören... verursacht Gänsehaut!
This piece really gives me goose pimpels all over. My father used to play this very loud and as a kid I already loved it. This was very well sung and I wonder how, as I pressume, these americain singers, have such a good german pronounciation. Love it.
This is the defining moment. Freedom above all. These German words are those which count.
Oh welche Lust das zu hören....;-)
Beethoven....geniaal!!!!
Amazing, this is where we are right now again, especially in Germany, and in the year of Beethovens 250 aniversiry!
Even though it was 7 month ago you posted your comment I'd still like you to know how much I was takend by it. Personally I am experiencing a kind of (emotional) freedom - and this wonderful piece of music composed by Ludwig van Beethoven can actually be applied to various life-situations. Exposed to this opera through my parents, when I was a child it caught my deepest soul - and stayed with me forever more. Amazing how music is able to open and broaden receptive peoples minds.
I to saw the production when it was in Houston. I loved it tremendously!
I also saw the production when it was in Houston. Had goosebumps.

Fidelio: Royal Opera House Live screening - Tuesday 17th March, 2020.
Beethoven Rules!! Genius. I see this as maybe a kind of prelude ,I think here he is formulating his idea of Ode to joy from his wonderful ninth symphony, a inspiration for freedom hope, joy and liberty! (just my opinion)

31 January 2020 23:00 GMT London - God bless us all.
Hearing the NYC Gay Men's Chorus sing this excerpt was quite moving.
OMG, I cried!
Though I like the 1805 version even better (the one that trails off into a final "Ja, leise!"), this is is still a gorgeous piece of choral writing. I, too have often fantasized: what if you went to the most oppressed and tyrannical places in he world and simply played this music? An amazing message of hope.
This is so beautiful. Beethoven the democrate.
❤️🔥🔥🔥🎼🎹
Ist das nicht immer wieder Gänsehaut-Musik?
PERFECT !!!.... (We are going to sing it in Nicosia Cyprus on July 1, 2012...) I'll upload, if I get a DVD... :-)

The prisoners: Oh what joy to be in the open air And draw breath easily! Here alone, here alone is life, The dungeon is a tomb. First Prisoners: With confidence we will Trust in God’s help! Hope whispers to me softly: We shall be free, we shall find rest. All the others: O heavens! Deliverance! What a blessing! O freedom! Will you return? Second Prisoner: Speak quietly! Restrain yourselves! We are observed by eyes and ears. All: Speak quietly! Restrain yourselves! We are observed by eyes and ears. Oh what joy to be in the open air And draw breath easily! Here alone, here alone is life. Speak quietly! Restrain yourselves! We are observed by eyes and ears.

That was not written by me!
Who else here was brought by Ken Clarke ?
Why do they sing "O welsche Lust" ("O French-style sex!") instead of "O welche Lust" ("O what a joy")??? That's hilarious!

I can't imagine a better way to celebrate.
Although I am pretty disappointed by the bad sound and dragging of the Met choir, I think the bass soloist has a great voice.

Chris Toff The tenor as well!
"Oh Welsche Lust" , "Hawltet euch zurück" und das Tempo ist an der Grenze zum Spannunglosen. Ich bin enttäuscht, von der MET hätte ich mehr erwartet...
