Fiberreed Review - Including the New "Carbon Onyx", Hemp, Carbon, & Natural

Музыка

howtoplaysaxophone.org/fiberre... I play through the 3 well-known Fiberreeds; the Natural, the Carbon, the Hemp, and now the 4th new one called the Carbon Onyx. Hear the difference in sound and my personal opinion on each of these synthetic saxophone reeds.

    Hi Johnny. In the last 18 years I've been using on my Yanagisawa alto sax (Rico Plasticover size 2-3). I am very satisfied with this type of reed and I have never wondering to get back to use normal, natural reed anymore!

    very good video, thank you Mr. Ferreyra!.. I have imported direct from Germany a Carbon, Hemp and a Natural, and i can say that the sound is amazing good in all case, and more confiable than natural canes...so, i play with carbon in open air, and with hemp in saloon. I like very much your way to play. Greatings from Argentina. (sory for my english)

    I tried and I am still trying hemp Fiberreed on a tenor, with no baffle, large chamber rubber mouthpiece. It plays nice across all registers, intonation-wise it is great and plays remarkably well in tune! I think it sounds good and has potential, but I think that cane reeds still sound better on slow, large chamber mouthpieces. Perhaps I can touch up Fiberreed just a little on its wings and soften it to vibrate more in the slow stream of air..? But out of the box, Fiberreeds are definitely better suited for faster (medium and high baffle) mouthpieces.

    Good comparison.. I am the Danish dealer for Fiber Reeds,but been a bit slow for players to catch on here..myself I like the carbon & hemp models,have not tried the new Oynx yet(but sounded great!!) I use MS mostly, as if to hard then problems.(can be filed down if careful,but most I have trashed that way ;)

    Johnny, sounds like you could use any one of them, but my question is, how do they feel? Which feels the most like your cane reed preference and how do the strengths, compare?

  • @saxjohnny

    no, I wouldn't use the natural or the carbon but am using the hemp and carbon onyx. hemp has a real cane feeling with a bright tone, the onyx not as bright but overall fuller-sounding and real easy blowing especially in the lower end...hope that helps.

    Can you tell me, are you playing #3s on all four reeds? I'm listening on a PC so sound quality is not that great, but to my ear the Onyx seems to be the best compromise on ease of play, sound quality and projection.

    I'm really enjoying the Carbon Fiber Onyx Reed (I got a 3 Medium), and I can play high notes much more easily than I would on my regular Vandoren reeds,. However, I struggle playing soft with a good sound (it sounds really buzzy). Do you have the same problem or a solution?

  • @saxjohnny

    @saxjohnny

    when I switched to the onyx everything wasn't perfect. the high notes were a bit harder to get and the control down really low wasn't as easy as my cane...but after a few months things got better and now i don'y use cane anymore. keep focused and be patient

  • @jonas99g

    Hi, I liked the sound of the Carbon Onyx a lot. How would it sound like on a metal mouthpiece (Lebayle Jazz 8 ALTO)? better/fuller than the hemp version? I'm also not sure what strength i should get next( i had the hemp in medium 2.5). Tho the carbon onyx is still not available anywhere in Germany, but i need a new reed after one full year of active playing.(also the hemp reed is damaged a little bit, it can actually break when it gets weaker)

    Appreciate the comparisons. You got me curious enough to try the Carbon Onyx as a very responsive and resonant reed. In your opinion, how close are they to my current favorite synthetic, the Legere Signature? Also, Harry Hartmann website doesn't list them as available yet. Special thanks for previewing this fascinating reed.

    @Bob Premecz the Legere I have is the Studio Cut, which I tried a few years ago and it didn't sway me. the Fiberreed Hemp and Carbon Onyx sure did so in my view there is no comparison. for me the hemp has a more realistic feeling to cane but the overall sound is better with the Onyx.

  • @SlabHardcheese

    @SlabHardcheese

    I have the studio cut also, but the signature version is by far better. You might give it a try as it is one of the best I've used. To me they play very nicely, but with less cut and altisimo than the fiberreeds. For the music I play (rock, RnB, w Theo Wanne Shiva 7* or Durga 8) the carbon fiber MS is about perfect, though slightly soft. The hemp versions I have are stuffy on the high G and have a weird asymmetric vibration that cuts into the left side inner lip that make me stop after 10 minutes. The carbon reeds play great without any stuffy G problem, with incredible altissimo and buzz, but also have the same asymmetric vibration (but not as bad) that after a while will hurt the inside of my lip left side. I can play them about half an hour before I fear for it cutting in or the pain gets too much. Maybe I need to try some different ligatures (currently using the liberty lig from theo). Have you experienced the left side vibration pain? It has me flustered as I otherwise love the reeds and would love to solve that. It happens with two identical MS carbons and hemps on both Shiva and Durga MPC. Several other reviews have experienced the same so it's not just me. Maybe it has to do with high baffle mouthpieces, but I would love to solve that issue. Thanks for the great comparison video. I will be purchasing an onyx to try soon.

    Bonjour Monsieur Ferreira. J'essaie de m'approcher le plus possible , avec mon sax. soprano du type de son qu'obtient Stan Getz ( je l'ai entendu au soprano et il parvenait à obtenir cette même sonorité feutrée qu'avec son ténor ) Ma question est : y a-t-il , à votre avis , dans ces nouvelles reeds une ou plusieurs d'entr'elles qui peuvent m'aider à obtenir ce son. Personnellement, j'utilise une mouthpiece selmer 80 avec une reed 2.5 vandoren ZZ noire mais actuellement: j'essaie tout ce que je trouve..... Ah....Ah ....Ah...!!! .Merci

    I picked the hemp and onyx as my 2 faves and haven't had them long enough, But, starting to lean towards the onyx. at least here at home. on stage I could see the hemp working better as it's brighter and louder. we'll see how it goes over the next few weeks and months.

    I just tried the carbon fibre medium Reed, and I am slightly disappointed. I normally play on a legere signature 3 reed. I love the sound of the carbon fiber up until high F, and any notes above that. They are highly unstable for me while on the legere I have full control. Have you noticed this Johnny?
