Thanks for this video. I bought by 1981 X19 in 1991 and still have it. it has 78K miles on it and i have been rebuilding it with the next agenda item being replacing the window and getting the car painted. My car has been garaged almost all of its life so good news is I don't have rust but this video was great for helping me understand what to watch out for and the process of getting the window out, and cleaned up ready for painting. thanks.

I had a X1/9 for a number of years around 1998 to 2003 the issue with the rust at the base of the windscreen has also got to do with when people get into the car because it’s tight and low They tend to put one hand on the corner of the windscreen and shift their body weight to that corner to lower themselves down into the seat and when they get out they put their hand on the windscreen corner to pull themselves up and it causes cracking along the base of the windscreen and then water it gets in on those cracks and then it starts to rust out from there

This is such a nice colour for an X19, I have a silver one and a blue Gran Finale, I think this colour was only made in the 1300cc versions from memory. Great cars to drive, the engine buzzes away like it's got a wasps nest camped behind your head.

*I wanted to buy this car. But by the time I got to see this episode it was a rerun and the car had long been sold.* All I could think was an X1/9 fixed up by Ant Anstead would be trouble-free. And the color was like nothing I've seen before on this model. If you have the means, you should drive one. It is so choice.

I'm surprised at the statement in the video about how modern cars use the windshield to strength and the X1/9 is from an era where that wasn't done. I say this because the X1/9 windscreen is epoxied in and Fiat even imbedded a heater wire into the epoxy which you are supposed to connect to a 12V source to soften it. This is exactly how the windshield is part of the structure. A rubber mounted windshield does not add support. Perhaps this windscreen was replaced already and did not follow the factory installation technique.

The X1/9, other than being a realy stilish car, is a supremely rational roadster. The way a small sporty two/seater should be designed, both for weight distribution and exploitation of the space. When Leyland introduced the TR7, at the Geneva car show, Giorgetto Giugiaro couldn't believe that car was ready to be put in production.

Yeah, well that's probably based on the reaction you get (from idiots) if you own an X. Top three comments from experience are : I thought they all rusted away. What you driving that for? Is that a TR7? Trust me, it's pointless trying to explain.

@@johnmorrow7080 thanks, that's incredibly helpful... and I'm encouraged to learn and have a go at making a couple of structural repairs in steel. A previous owner had made some repairs with fibreglass and despite this not being correct, had done a good job so I probably won't go over those areas again unless I absolutely have to. Regards the underside, arches, exhaust bay, engine bay and interior, I've been removing as much rust as possible, then flooding the area with stop-rust to stabilise the surface. Sometimes months go by before I do the next stage which is to remove the stop-rust with paint thinner, before brush painting with grey etching primer. I'm hoping this will be a good base coat and it shows up the holes.
