Fiat Panda Mk2 Selecta road test!

Yes, I FINALLY get to drive a Fiat Panda, a Mk2, with the revised rear suspension. In fact, this is a fairly late one in the UK, dating from 1993. It is also Selecta, with the two-pedal Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) - not Constantly as I say in the video.
There are still a couple more videos to come in this series. Stay tuned!

    My parents have had a 4x4 Panda on their farm for over 30yrs completely reliable fantastic in snow and ice.....and still going strong.....despite being covered in mud and straw..like a small jeep

    You can't help but like old Fiat Panda's. They are like big go karts. The Selecta is impressive as they revs just stay where they are and just build up speed. The engine sounds very understressed too. CVT's have improved alot over the decades as technology has progressed. You must be tempted to buy a Panda Selecta in the future. Your face said it all.

    I had the pleasure to drive one with the 1.1 fire engine in the late Eighties. It was genius. Revved up like a scooter to 3000 RPM, stayed there and still accelerated. That car weighed 700 kgs, I had it on the autobahn going 160 kph and still pedal not yet floored - unbelievable! A a red light you didn't need to hold the brake for it just didn't creep like an ordinary Automatic. I loved that tin box!

    This test takes me right back to my first car, a mk1 Fiat Panda, in creamy beige colour, 903cc old Fiat engine. And I loved it! Such a pure design (all Giugiaro I think, inside and outside), that hammock 'dashboard' pocket, those flat car seats like the ones in village halls. Utterly simple mechanically, in fact with a rear beam axle on leaf springs, I don't think anything counts as mechanical beyond the engine bay. Ahhhh, nostalgia eh...?! Thanks

    Oh wow! I've been a subscriber for about 8 months and only just found this! I owned a 1991 1000 Selecta and it's one of the best cars I've owned. I used to get up to 60MPG from mine and they were seriously nippy from a standstill. I was always surprising people away from the lights. My first car was an E-Reg Panda 1000S, I also owned a 1994 metallic purple Panda with twin cloth sunroofs. I always wanted the 1.1 Selecta but they're rarer than hen's teeth!

    I worked for a Subaru dealer when the Justy came out. I drove a 4X4 Justy a few times. The CVT transmission felt strange, but I got to like it. The only ones we had trouble with were the ones sold to pizza delivery shops. Some of the young folks driving them would hold the brakes on while flooring the accelerator, leading to some expensive repairs.

    I had the base spec 750cc Panda almost new back in 1991 or 92. The dealers tended to buy one or two as the cheapest thing on the road to make up their sales targets and sell on. So I got 2nd hand with a discount and something like 11 miles on the clock. Much nicer (though less quirky) than the Fiat 126 bis it replaced. I believe it was designed to be a (for the '80s) more modern 2CV - all the glass is flat and the l/h and r/h windows were identical, not handed. Having been broken into through a side window, I learned this after trying all the local breakers then reluctantly going to Fiat and being pleasantly surprised that a new piece of glass was something daft like £11 untinted. Breakers only had tinted for £25 and up. The rear seat was little more than a piece of blanket stretched over 3 poles but came out easily to make a good big carrying space. The front seat actually gave me back problems. I didn't realise this at the time but after selling the Panda my pains subsided and stayed away. For what it was it was great value. Probably half the price of a Fiesta or Nova.

    I live in southern Italy tons of Pandas , I was talking to a woman who had one and I said plenty of room to put stuff in the back, she opened the back there was a tank it runs on methane or petrol, great machines

    On the earlier version of this gearbox, before it became the e-CVT here you could get the rather strange sensation of the car still accelerating while the engine speed was dropping. I did a fair few miles in first generation Fiat Uno Selectas as I started my working life at a Fiat main dealer in 1989, then in the late '90s I worked at a car dealer who had a 1989 Ford Fiesta mark 2 1.1 Ghia with the same transmission which was used as a general runaround and courtesy car. It was quite surreal nipping around the streets of Southampton in the little car watching the speedo climb while the rev counter dropped. They were a lot of fun and quite strange. There are very few left now, an awful lot have been converted back to manual gearboxes as, unlike a conventional automatic the CVT boxes tended to need a complete overhaul by about 50,000 miles which was quite expensive and there weren't many people who could do the job. I remember reading from Richard Gunn's column in one of the magazines that his car has already had that done. Certainly it wasn't like the rubber band DAFs where all you had to worry about was the odd vacuum hose falling off or perishing and it eating a drive belt every so often...

    Catching up on your videos. This one reminds me so much of the marvellous 85 Fiat Panda Prima Vera 45 CL we had when I was young. Amazing car, the only things that where big on that car was the name and the rare sunroof 😄

    Another of my uncles had and still has (at the time of writing this comment) a Fiat panda MK1. First he had a 2000 1.0l 2WD one and now he has a 1.0l 4WD one from 1992. Both have Fully Integrated Robotised Engines (FIRE) and where and are super reliable. This is in Italy btw. I can remember it took more than one person to engage the 4WD system ha! Although they’re both manuals unlike this one.

    Love the Fiat Panda and the Seat Marbella.Drove both on holidays in Greece (hire cars),and absolutely loved them! Wouldn't mind one now,of l could find a good one❤😎👍!

    The mk2 panda manual before catalysts was a marvelous minimalist piece of kit 1000cl or 1000s were magic. If they still made them I would....... perhaps I'm getting old.

    My college tutor was doing his PHD on that Rover box, me and a mate had to write a simulation of it in C++ for a project. Our coding was hopeless (tutor provided us with all the equations to plug into it) but it was a lot of fun learning about it.

    A smile only a FIAT can give! I learned to drive in a SEAT Marbella... my parents were so strapped for cash they couldn't even afford a Panda. Happy memories nonetheless and a good basic car to learn about maintenance. Thankfully as a family between us we have owned several FIATs over the years... a 127 "Comfort", a Uno, Tempra, Brava, Bravo, Marea, Stilo and last, but not least, a Barchetta. All of the yellow ones (mine) were nothing but trouble... but also strangely brilliant!

    I've had 1x mk1 punto cabriolet 1.6, 1x seicento Sporting, 1x "standard Cinq sporting, 1x cinq sporting with a 1.2 8v, 1x cinq sporting with 1.2 16v and 1x Mk2 punto HGT. Also came very close to owning a coupe 20 valve turbo, a 20v Marea saloon, a 1.1 classic panda and a Tipo Sedicivalvole. All temperamental at best but what i've learnt my mechanical skills on. Huge fun though!

    I had 2 of these babies - one an Italia 90 special edition - and a SEAT Marbella. I actually preferred the old school suspension and ohv engine in the SEAT. Says more about me than the cars probably

    OMG, do you have an "Italia '90" special edition? They're pretty rare, and now they are the most expensive 2wd Pandas from the first generation (maybe amongst the ones built before 1986).

    The only car i bought brand new a fiat panda Bella 900 cc . i took her to Glasgow from London. She would sit on the motorway all day long at 80mpg . A great car so easy to work on .i sold her with 96k on the clock

    Just a little FYI, the point of a CVT is to keep the engine at maximum given torque and so aid fuel economy, that's why they get to a certain revs then stop revving, as the road speed catches up, unless you want to hoon it then you start using HP instead of torque. Nissan loves them and many manufacturers are starting to offer them as an option again, but now it is a steel belt made of little sections instead of a rubber belt.

    I had an A Class with CVT and a Jazz with CVT. Love that type of transmission and would have another. The Jazz even had 'paddles' on the wheel, which if you knew how to use them and use the rev limiter to change up in 'Sport' mode(using it in its loosest term), would surprise a few people. shame it's not as popular as it should have been.

    I had a Fiesta Ghia with CVT, loved it, used to hold the revs at 3K and it would cruise at 65 mph. But I did manage to over rev it, broke a valve on my way to Brighton whilst overtaking a car. Managed to limp home on three cylinders thankfully.

    The kickdown preset ratio was really nice too. I've surprised motorcycles at traffic lights by keeping up with their sprint for the first meters.

    I've a '92 1L, had it for about 8 years now? I love it. Loves being thrown into corners and pretty nippy (probably due to lacking any sort of safety features and the fact that it's basically made of tin :-)

    Had a 1985 Fiat Panda Bianca 45s--903cc engine same as the 127 but 5 spd, would hit 80mph quite easily but wind noise awful. Miss that car, smoked a bit but always started and only car i sold for more and with 2wk mot left as the buyer urgently needed cheap wheels. Great memories, C393 RMY

    I would love to have that car. I drive a Mitsubishi Space Star (Mirage) 1.2 CVT now. It has an atomatic 2 speed gearbox attached as well. That reduces the rubber band effect of CVT a lot. I love that Mirage and will keep it until in falls apart. Utterly reliable car too. 50.000 miles and not even a lightbulb broke. Nothing. And on average 62 miles per gallon (UK) 52 (US) 4.5 l/100 km (SI).

    Great little video, If you wana drive a proper cvt from that era try a K11 micra if i remember right it won car of the year for 1993 or something, anyway fantastic little cvt was light years ahead of everything else absolutely bullet proof little car & transmission never used to put a spanner on them between services

    I remember there being a feature on Top Gear in the late 80`s about small CVT`s being unable to go up steep hills, IIRC they tested a Fiesta Mk2, a Micra K10 & an Uno (which I think all share the same box), & indeed they struggled/couldnt do it. I think it was Maggie Philbin?

    First CVT Fiesta was Mk3 I think. K11 Micra was definitely CVT, and Uno. As you say, all the same Van Doorne transmission. Did they put them in L I wonder?

    No idea. They did have the CVT in the Mk2, they introduced it about mid way through its lifespan. I still avoid CVT`s, they are quite common in all small cars, but I much prefer `proper` boxes, both for feel & longevity.

    @@HubNut The first CVT Fiesta was Mid-1987 D-plate so quite late mk2 in 1.1 Valencia flavour only (theirs was called CTX), along with the CVT version of the Fiat Uno 60S which were both introduced at the same time. My old K11 was great fun with that gearbox, really nippy and it never crept forward when stationary after releasing the footbrake.

    I love CVT's. It's the most control you'll have over an automatic gear box. It does exactly what you want it to do depending on the position of your feet. Also great for drifting as you can keep the speed of the wheels super exact :). Actually, the DAF's 66 and Volvo 66 feel quite different. The Volvo is smoother and the gearshifter works in a more conventional PRND way. The DAF only has forward/neutral/back. Also if you're into CVT's and you want something fun to drive and reliable, try the Volvo 340. As 'elderly gentleman' as it may have been back in the day, it's actually a really pleasant car to drive and, according to a Volvo mechanic from back in the day, the most reliable Dutch Volvo (66, 343, 340, 345, 440, 460, 480, S40) ever built. Anyway, never drove a Panda but I used to own a Seat Marbella and I adored the ridiculous little thing.

    My first car ☺️. I passed my test in 88 on a Vauxhall Nova 1.2L hatch and then I bought my little white Panda. Unfortunately my car had what I called the ‘Mayonnaise effect’-pulling the dipstick out was a horrible experience , a white mess! My car would go through a modest puddle and then stop. I was also going along and the clutch pedal disappeared..I think the cable went. I enjoyed it, it had a roll sunroof 😊

    Yeah, the cables would wear out on the bulkhead for the clutch, you'd have to keep an eye out for when the wound steel started to ping. The mayo was the head gasket and the HT leads needed replacing every few years as preventive maint. I remember it like yesterday.

    We had two cars of late that did the CVT transmission, here in North America, the Ford Freestyle, which was later called the Taurus X which was a full sized estate wagon that if you bought in front wheel drive you got a CVT, you can buy them fairly cheap as the transmission wasn't that reliable and then the Jeep offered a CVT in their Patriot model I think it was designed when Daimler-Benz owned Chrysler. And of course we also got the new Mini's with the CVTs, who in the heck would buy an automatic Mini? I hear there a re a few others now but since I don't buy fleet cars for work any more I don't keep up with all of the models.

    Man, the Brits go crazy over the Fiat Panda's!!! That's all i ever hear, Fiat Panda, Fiat Panda, Fiat Panda!! I'm not sure what the deal or love affair is with these Panda's but im sure this video has done a great job of educating me on it! Great video.

    You should try the mk2 Uno, they were much much tighter than the Panda (well, even a piece of furniture is) and way less noisy. If you find a proper maintained Uno with the 1.1 fire engine in the carburettor version you'll be surprised how good it sounds. Later versions used injection instead and had a cat converter limiting power and range quite a bit.

    I owned a Fiat Uno FIRE from 1992 as my first car after I took my driving license here in Italy, with the 1.0 fire engine: apart from performance (only 45bhp...) it really felt like it was a much bigger car, because of the space inside, the better designed driving position and the quiter noise of the engine! What a marvellous car!

    I drove one of these pandas many years ago and it was a fun little car to drive .Simple car with simple mechanics the only thing i didnt like about it was i didnt feel safe in it at all . It felt like i was driving around in a tin can lol

    I’m back again lol I had one of these too hahaaaa worked in the trade so most of the cars you test I had and me and my buddy’s would go on road trips,making sure we had plenty of oil and water on board,watched loads of your content today along with the Fred dibnah documentary’s ,whilst working I might add

    CVT!!! God I love them. Deffo getting a CVT in my next car. I want a smile on my face like that. Also, they are like arriva trains, rev and go all the way to 60ish Can anyone compile a list of 2010 onwards cars with CVT please? I know honda jazz do one. Subaru? Audi none DSG/quattro?

    @@HubNut I hear bad things about the Jatco CVT's that Nissan uses. Subaru might be a better choice as they have a long history with CVT. I think their parent company Fuji Hevay Industries even constructed the transmission for this Panda Selecta.

    My first car was a 750cc Fiat panda,,, ... Had good suspension on rough roads i remember. Feel of the clutch was terrible, gear box was terrible also! Car was on its last legs ..

    Weird, a Panda making smart whooshy automatic noises...I didn't know they did an auto. I think I'd like a CVT equipped car for the novelty and the look on passenger's faces as they try to work out what in criminy is going on!

    The Fiat Uno/Panda were not built as a motorway car, more your everyday commute to work supermarket etc, with occasional longer trips.

    I had a FIAT Panda mark 2. It was a 900 Dance. Lovely little car. Sadly it got vandalised and smashed.

    had A reg got water leak ones had no water on me but had 2L bottle coke so filled radiator up wir coke got me home 7.miles had top up cup times funny times no joke

    Ah, the Variomatic! The old DAF's would go as quick in reverse as they'd go forward. The reason there's not a lot of them around has a lot to do that they were used for reverse driving races. Basically a DAF destruction Derby. Check out "daf achteruitrijden" if you wish to despair at the destruction of now classic cars.

    You can drive these in L which means it revs higher at lower speeds. Its probably for hills.

    non-servo brakes Ian? As far as I recall all mine didn't have a servo. When you have got used to such decadence over the years prodding the brakes in a non servo assisted set up can be heart stopping until you readjust your expectations

    In that case I bow to your experience - I remember the heart stopping moment when the pedal in a mini clubman I was driving just went to the bulkhead with nothing happening as the benchmark of genuinely crap breaks lol

    Have you ever driven an old Mini automatic? I have one, although it will soon be a manual, and it's in 4th gear by the time you're up to 30mph. It's a very innovative design, four speed and utilising the engine oil as transmission fluid.

    Yes, had one too. The first three ratios were very close then a big jump to 4th, and for some reason only available on the 998 so made my poor Traveller a little sluggish but great fun.

    The fiat panda... One of few cars made back then, that gets more economic as the years pass. Mainly due to bits falling off and reducing weight! Sounds like a bouncy daf ina way!

    I once borrowed a friend's Panda,,,wrote it off,all I did was pull the handbrake on,,,red rot abounded,,,😂

    Can't believe you'd never driven a Panda before. You don't mention ownership of any but you always smile more when you're in a Fiat. I think you're in denial of your love and appreciation of them, but I can see the cracks. Hopefully you'll soon see the light, dump the troublesome, unreliable French stuff and form a lasting relationship with Italys finest. It's not too late 😂😂😂

    Im not sure if its a Ford box or a Van Doorne one. I know that the car was built in Spain or Germany as it hasn't fallen apart yet. Its all orginal. Just has a bit of surface rust on the sills. I even ran a magnet along its arches and other rust prone areas. Its not exactly what my late grandma had as that was a pop plus but its the right colour and engine. Its starts very good from cold and hot. It fires up just as fast as a Minor.
