Fiat Panda 2020 In-Depth Review - Smarter and More Efficient

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A FIAT PANDA FROM OSV: bit.ly/3l6ecWr
Fiat's Panda aims at being all the car some buyers will ever need. It's large where it matters, yet still small enough for its urban purpose. It's more efficient - especially in its latest 1.0-litre mild hybrid form - yet can offer surprising reserves of performance. And you can make it high-tech - or specify one that's super-affordable. The Italians have always done this kind of thing very well. They still do.
Background
Almost every car you can think of on the market can be pigeonholed into a specific market segment. And even if it can't be, it's likely to appeal to a very specific group of customers. The Fiat Panda's different. Though sized and priced as a little citycar, it's so versatile and class-less that it can really function as.... well, almost anything you want. Depending on the flavour you choose, it's a design as suited to city living as it is to the needs of a mountaintop farmer. It can be a hot hatch - or eco-conscious transport for Friends of the Earth. It can be a second vehicle for older empty-nesters. Or the sole car for a rural family. Less a citycar. More an 'essential' car, it is, in the words of one top Fiat executive 'the official car for doing whatever the hell you like'.
This is the Italian brand at its very best. A modern-era MK2 Panda design was launched back in 2003 to replace a first generation model that sold for over twenty years from 1980. The MK3 design we've got here was originally launched back in 2011, but in early 2020 was significantly updated with the option of 1.0-litre mild hybrid power; it's this improved Panda that we're going to take a look at here. Functional, solid, intelligent and free spirited, it's still, we're told, a car that thinks outside the box. Let's try it.
Driving Experience
The volume Panda range is now based around Fiat's newer three cylinder 70hp 1.0-litre mild hybrid powerplant, which improves fuel efficiency without impeding performance. It also ensures a very high standard of driving comfort thanks to a 12-volt 'BSG' 'Belt-integrated Starter Generator', allowing for a quiet, vibration-free restart of the internal combustion engine in Stop&Start mode. The engine (which we've already seen in Fiat's alternative citycar, the 500) puts out 92Nm of pulling power and works via a 6-speed manual gearbox integrated with that 'BSG' set-up we just mentioned. The 'BSG' system is mounted directly on the engine and is operated by the belt that also drives the auxiliaries. The new system also involves lowering the entire power unit 45mm so the car behaves better on the road thanks to the lower centre of gravity.
Bear in mind that if you opt for either the standard shape ('Wild') or 'Cross' versions of the top 4x4 derivative, the engine used continues to be the brand's two cylinder 85hp TwinAir petrol unit. The 'Cross' version adds an All terrain selector driving mode system and rear differential gear locking that will take you further off the beaten track.
All Pandas are of course especially at home in a city environment. True, the five-speed gearbox could be a little more precise, but you'll appreciate the way this car takes even quite nasty small urban bumps in its stride. And delivers neat little touches like the steering's 'City' mode option to increase the assistance it gives at parking speeds so that you can use the tight 9.3m turning circle more easily. Urban-friendly through and through you see.
Design and Build
Fiat has given this updated MK3 model Panda a slightly smarter look, courtesy of revised bumpers, smarter wheels and fresh colour options. It remains a tall car, with a vertical tail, a five-door-only shape and a large glass area, plus there's the usual tiny roadway footprint. And the familiar friendly look remains, based upon what Fiat's designers call 'a squarical' theme, rounded rectangles in vogue everywhere from the headlamps to the front air intake, from the wheelarches to that trademark extra third rearward side window.

I've got a 2013 Panda. I've had it 6 years now and it has never missed a beat. £30 road tax, £180 insurance, and the only non-consumable I've had to replace is one shock absorber. Absolutely love this car. It may be the last petrol car I ever own, as I feel sure it'll get the full electric treatment in the near future. I've had some much fancier cars in the past, but there's something about a Panda that just makes you smile.

I own a 2016 Fiat Panda Cross and I’m absolutely in love with it. I live here in central Sweden so our winters aren’t that bad as in the northern parts but when it get icy and dicey on the roads I’m glad I have the 4wd to help me and it’s the first car that I haven’t fitted studded winter-tires on. Last winter I was up in the north and drove about 150km in 30-50cm of snow with absolutely no problem; the fuel economy suffered because of the effort but no other issues... One problem is that the AC-condenser is mounted in a bad place in the lower parts of the bumper so rocks and other debris ruined in three years and that was an expensive repair bill but otherwise it as been reliable!

My 2019 4x4 Twin Air is returning over 47 mpg, on a mixture of A & B roads. I don’t do a lot of town driving & have never taken it on a motorway. The only drawback I’ve found is the lack of space for my dog. I keep the rear seats folded down & have a piece of 4” insulation filling up the drop in the back, so it’s flat when she jumps in. It’s my first Fiat & I love it!

Hello thanks for another impressive in depth review. I think Fiat as a brand are much maligned. I have owned three Fiats over a period of time, a Panda, a mk2 Punto and my favourite a Stilo Multiwagon JTD. All of these cars gave very good service and were really reliable. The Multiwagon was used for business and clocked up faultless mega miles only needing to change the battery and part exhaust when it was 10 years old. The "new" Panda is good and well priced but needs to be completely replaced with a new model to improve safety but with out losing it's character..

Looking at the front of my 4x4 Antarctica the air intake is just below the bonnet slam panel, all the filter housing is mostly above the engine, even the turbo is quite high up. Doesn't look much below the height of the numberplate could be affected by water? The engine design seems crazy. 1 bhp more than the older 1.2 seems a missed opportunity. To be honest, id still go for the Panda 4x4 with the twinair petrol engine. Its a gem, even on the motorway. Not sure what Fiat are thinking with this new 1 litre unit if the mild hybrid doesnt really do anything. Subaru are hopeless at Hybrids but at least they do give you a bit more power.

Yes, the 1.0 has worse torque which means less driveable, more revs and likely worse economy in practice. For comparison the old EU4 1.2 was 102Nm at 2500rpm. Wouldn't be surprised if the next one is 70hp at 8000rpm.

I'd love Fiat to make a new Panda 2022 version while still having the flare of the old Panda, but now with three EV models, one with the small battery from the Fiat 500e and one with the bigger battery and also a cross 4x4 version with the bigger battery. Just take the motors of the Fiat 500e, the 95hp model for the cheaper version and 118hp model for the bigger battery model and then add an AWD model with one 95hp engine in the front and like 40hp in the back. Just continue selling the combustion engines with the old model and just keep the interior and exterior cheap as it is and keep it basic and this car will sell really well in Italy, as the 500e also sells really well. They have 6.000€ rebate for new EVs, so a base Panda should cost about 18.000€ after the rebate as the base Fiat 500e costs about 26.000€ with the rebate it's slightly below 20.000€. Also I'd love to see a lighter aluminium body.

I’m sure it serves a lot of people’s fancy, and I hope they have good fun with it, but all things considered, I’m not going to look at the panda again. The Panda had a 4 star rating on the older NCAP system. The new test takes into consideration auto braking systems etc for all the millennials who are too busy texting and pissing about with ipod connections etc to watch where they are going. Fucking soft generation that needs mummy to do everything for them. Thats why companies now pander to these weaklings and have to make sure everything is wrapped in cotton wool. Fucking joke. The Panda is still the same construction as the car that was given a 4 star rating so dont be so soft.

@@oddities-whatnot I agree with you about millennials getting distracted, although manufacturers are also to blame fitting multiple screens and things like heater controls buried in sub- menus. At least the Fiat predates those. In fact does it have a heater?🤷‍♂️

@@oddities-whatnot nobody 'pisses' around with 'ipod' connections - its not 2010 and most cars have andriod auto or apple carplay so people dont use their phones !!?? and its mainly the middle ageed mums that are texting and driving, and don't forget the people over 70 who have the reaction times of a slough and hog the middle lane... so stop being a grumpy miserable boomer and start realising that all generations have their flaws but by having to pick on the ones who are the youngest have grown up with the new modern life makes you look childish...

Bit of a daft comment from cactus life. It's no worse than many other cars still on the road. It's safer than the many thousand of c1s 107s and aygos. Yes it needs to improve to meet the higher bar now set. But media hype peddled by woke millennials and boomers alike, calling it a death trap.. is pure tosh.
